  • The Fallout series has spent the better half of two decades getting tremendous praise. Up until recently, the Fallout franchise was seemingly untouchable. The classic Fallout games becoming greatest hits and the modern Fallout titles capturing our hearts. How has a series loved by so many, fallen so far from grace? This is the decline of Fallout.

youre spot on with all of this. the only issue is that FoT isnt made by interplay. it was made by their subsidiary, 14 Degrees East. which was lead by a head of the company that didnt work on Fallout, but DID work on the original Wasteland IP. BlackIsle was still a thing when 14*E was making FoT.
      this man has done... ALOT.
      www.mobygames.com/developer/sheet/view/developerId,2896/
we can safely say though, that Fallout BoS was a game formed to the times and the console players. We see them get back on track with Fallout Van Buren using what they have learned here and there.
Though. i have this feeling that After FoT... Fallout wouldnt hold too well. the engine that Interplay was using in Van Buren looks a bit too... aesthetic? too plastic? looks like a 3DO engine.

If you like the settlement system (which I personally do) then that's another pro for Fallout 4 but as much as I do like it, it feels unfinished and there are lots of people that just ignore the settlements entirely and I can't fault them for it.

Fallout 1 and 2 were amazing. F3 brought us into the 3D era, which in my opinion is just better for immersion purposes, but it fell short in many aspects. New Vegas was the peak of the 3D era, having improved where F3 failed. Fallout 4 brought some very good upgrades in terms of gameplay, layered armor, weapon and armor mod system, the workshop building and my favorite thing about it: the new power armor was an absolute joy to play, but it fell short everywhere else. 76 brought multiplayer, which was something I've always wanted in a fallout game, but instead of the Borderlands treatment we got this abomination of a game.

I was a massive TES fan since I was 12 Morrowind to me is what Fallout is to you. My first step in the post apocalyptic was S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Love it to this day. Tempted to install it... Another childhood favorite was Mafia. Then Mafia 2 comes along. I realize how much I love the 50’s. So there I am with Skyrim a few months away, no new Stalker games in sight, wanting something in the 50’s, but also post apocalyptic. And I love sci-fi in general. Then it occured to me that I looked up Fallout 3 many times before but in the past I did not like the whole retrofuture thing. So now I am thinking, hey it has two things I like. And a new Fallout fan was born right there in April 2011.

We also have a fallout tv show on the way that while given attention, hasn’t received the interest I feel it would’ve had it been announced even 3 years ago.

FO4 story while not as good as the older games is fine enough, but the gameplay and world are stellar. Playing FO4 without fast travel made me appreciate the Commonwealth much more because there's always something happening in the roads you travel, and so many interesting places to explore and read lore, loot to find, junk to improve your gear, interesting enemies, it's just so dynamic and fun.

I just thought of something. If you think about it, Bethesda's era of Fallout games have so far gone through the same cycle as Interplay's original games
Starting off with Fallout 3/Fallout 1: The first in it's run whether it be 1st/3rd person, or turn based isometric. Both were met with criticism, but were ultimately successful enough to spark demand
Then with the sequels, Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 2: Both starting off a bit rocky but then widely loved over time. Both at the height of each era
Fallout 4/Tactics: Building off the hype of its predecessors both games decide to go for a different approach. For Tactics it was strategy, for 4 it was more focus on things like shooting mechanics and settlements. Both were technically successful, but didn't feel like Fallout as much as previous titles.
And then... 76/BOS: Worst of both eras. Trying to "Innovate" the series, but ultimately failing at everything it does.
Now Fallout is in the loop, and I'm very worried about the future. Maybe the franchise should be bought like Interplay did with Bethesda by either Obsidian, or another company who understand Fallout.
UPDATE: JUST FOUND OUT MICROSOFT BOUGHT ZENIMAX AND BETHESDA!!!!!

    • @DamienDarkside
      @DamienDarkside ปีที่แล้ว

Not really for two entries, you're trying too hard to fit things in your boxes. FO1 was relatively unknown while FO3 was a driving push for gaming on their generation. FO3 was not some obscure indie hit from a minor company, it was a multi-million dollar success story that was expected to make money.
F76 did exactly what it wanted to do: multiplayer Fallout. It's been a financial success for the company and has brought in millions of dollars, the complete opposite of BoS. Also the events of Fallout 76 are mostly canon, whereas even before Bethesda BOS was considered non-canon by many. The only thing you can tie the two together with is the perceived player reaction to BOS/F76, but even then that still doesn't hold true due to the huge 76 community. Most of the "hate" was pushed by "BETHESDA BAD" people, the rest had fun with the game and are still playing it.
I get the intention, but Bethesda was purchased because of their successes, Interplay sold Fallout due to their failures.

i got started on fallout in 2010 with fallout 3 because of my brother and being as young as i was, i couldn't fully understand what was going on, but something in my mind clicked with that game. from then on i looked forward to other fallout games. my brother informed me that another one was coming out the same year, within a few months of this time. from then on i played new vegas with my brother relentlessly. we got all the unique guns, played through the entire story in all the different ways you can, and basically did everything you can do in new vegas. i was still about 6-7 years old, so i still couldn't fully realize what was going on. but, i was capable enough to kind of know, and enjoy the game a great deal while playing it with my brother. come time for fallout 4, i was about 10 years old. i was capable enough to basically understand everything that was going on in the fallout games and all the announcements at E3. i was so overly exaggeratedly hyped, i literally downloaded a fallout 4 timer app on my iphone 6s. it came out and it was the first release night I've ever went to, and when we went to the gamestop we pre-ordered from there was a line across the entire sidewalk of the plaza we were in. we get our copy, go home, and play it for like 5 minutes and go to sleep. we were out of it. but, the next day we turned it on at night and fully experienced it. i fell asleep half was through and he played the entire thing overnight. and i barely played it afterward. i just didn't, i literally don't remember why. 2 years later i get a pc, and new vegas and 4 are some of the first games i buy. this is when i could fully experience them on my own. and i did. new vegas is hands down my favorite game of all time. logging 400 hours on pc and probably 300 on console with my brother. fallout 4 i have 450, and half of those are from mods and the expansive new melee system and weapons system that i could make new and different builds with. i loved it, but it still fell short for me. fallout 3 and nv were always better in my eyes. 76 rolls around and by that time i'm a year younger than i am now. and as much as i hate to say it, i simply can't trust bethesda anymore. having been a fan for a decade and only being 15 years old, 76 is genuinely one of the worst games I've played, no doubt. even with the new updates. maybe i'm blinded by the wave of criticism that came with it, or the internet historian video, i still hate it. i feel betrayed tbh. having been supporting bethesda for way over half of my life, and they make an obvious cash grab that was a slap in the face to fans. one of the problems being the severely outdated engine, and then they say their new ip and the new elder scrolls are being built in the same engine?! its unfathomable tbh. hopefully, they can redeem themselves, what they don't realize is that if they just listen to the fans and create an actual good game again, that money will come. i guess why put the effort in when you can put in a quarter of that effort and make the same money? but they can't do that anymore because of 76. everyone is not gonna pre-order til they see gameplay, and not gonna buy until they see reviews. if they pull a 76 with their next game, bethesda is out of the window. it really sucks.

Would I be missing a lot by turning the combat difficulty down? Normally I'm all about a decently challenging experience, but I noticed that even in Fallout 1 I wasn't REALLY enjoying myself until I got power armor and stumbled across an Alien Blaster. It made it a lot more fun to take chances and explore more, and it made the second half of the game WAAAYY better for me.
I dunno, it just feels weird to set a game to easy and I would honestly almost feel ashamed to. I'm the type who usually likes to get perfect scores in Devil May Cry and no-death runs in Souls games.

3, and new vegas are my favorite. I still play them. Your childhood experience with fallout 1, and 2 sound like how I experienced 3, and NV. I didn't have any negative outcomes from missing all that school though. I did spend most of my time, I was at school, with fallout on my mind. Up until I grew up, and found out girls were more important haha. As an adult though, that nostalgia I built up keeps me returning to the universe. Partly for the lore, partly for that rare hit of sweet, sweet nostalgia. Even so, because I always played the games the same, same build, same choices. I discover new things while playing even to this day.

ill be honest i was introduced to the series when i was rummaging threw my dad's old games and found vanilla fallout 3, i soon played threw most of it that summer and got new Vegas and fallout 4 that Christmas and honestly fallout 4 is my favorite, but after deciding to get the original 2 recently i can entirely understand where fans come from with their opinions on fallout 4. i relate the originals more to dnd than fallout 4. also yea i have a bitter taste in my mouth from the extreme over exploitation from 76 but i just friking LOVE the lore from the series and also honestly from 76. as also what you were saying the lore is really intriguing to me.

I understand that. I got into playing new vegas since then and I frikin love it. I still will like fallout 4 the most because it was the first I REALLY got into and enjoyed the characters and lore of. Fallout 4 just seemed (and still does seem) like a massive Improvement on 3. But it's lower since I have really played NV. I wonder if the pre-made character is what got most people off it, or the... different sorta story. It is just weird to me how it's not liked to any of the others, for actual game play and game I think its near to fallout 1. But I can also see how insanely different it is to the rest.

Fallout 1 was “Fallout” distilled. Fallout 2 was a massive expansion to the world but came close to “Jumping the Shark” in how zany and comedic the game became at points. But it was still true to the Fallout theme. Fallout 1 as you pointed out was bleak and showed a destroyed world with a bittersweet ending, Fallout 2 showed a build that was “building” back.
Fallout 3 was still incredible in my opinion and it was my first entrance into the franchise. I have fond memories. I find the original ending satisfying in away(death of player in sacrifice). Broken Steel though was a welcome addition and I was able to accept it as though maybe not “necessary” but welcome.
Fallout New Vegas is Fallout 3D done right and I wish Bethesda had continued its story.
Fallout 4 was.....a cliff dive. The game was good...but it was losing what made it “fallout”. There was no more bare desolate towns just trying to survive in a broken and desolate world. The entire city of Boston was practically untouched(for no good reason unlike New Vegas). But it’s dialogue was atrocious. There was no real choice in Fallout 4, just choices Bethesda wanted you to choose. And it no longer had the “Fallout Theme”. Everything in the world was misused and nothing felt familiar as a Fallout game.
And fallout 76 is self explanatory. The death of Fallout as a franchise that excites me.

Great video, dude! Fallout 2 is my favourite, personally, but I believe that New Vegas is hands down the best. Certainly not perfect, but I feel the aspects it did best should be the gold standard for future Fallout games, not that I expect Bethesda to learn anything from NV, though.

Maybe even a mode where you can control a super mutant behemoth or mirelurk queen in someone else’s world.

The biggest issue with Fallout is how the RPG elements that started the series have been progressively watered down in favour of expanding on the combat. This is remarkable for a series where you could literally talk the final boss out of his plan to conquer the world in FO1. FO76 shows the studio has lost interest in the heart of FO as an RPG and FO4 showed this decline as the vast majority of the stories were fetch quests or "kill x number of y" missions. The settlement system was intended to create first-person tower defense gameplay and the mod system again showed more interest in the FPS than the RPG.
FO's closest cousin is the Deus Ex series. This franchise too started to lose sight of its roots as Invisible War was nearly a straight up FPS and Human Revolution also leaned towards the FPS side due to its "boss fights". As much as Mankind Divided was disliked due to an unresolved narrative, I see that as revealing a strength of the game - people were engaged by the story. Both FO and DE owe their roots to the CRPG and that in turn originates from the tabletop-RPG where the underlying appeal was freedom of choice not combat. FO is in decline due to losing sight of it's roots and in danger of becoming a generic FPS.
