Special Needs Car Harness

  • As requested, but...DON'T DO THIS! Seriously, if you aren't comfortable with doing this please don't. The way this is installed in our car works well and it works safely. As I said in the video the harness IS NOT for collisions or accidents. It's sole purpose is to position the stock seat belt in the correct location and to keep Abigail from climbing out of her seatbelt. There are special needs car seats available that I would recommend first if that's what your loved one needs. All that said, if you are comfortable with installing this the links are below.

  • @TORITHEGUMMYBEAR

I remember having to wear harnesses until I got into middle school since I was so tiny (I have dwarfism) and/or car seat. I had to ride the ESE bus because of that and also because I couldn't talk or communicate well and I needed someone to carry me up the steps lol. I think it would be so cool if there was a way to customize those harnesses whether it be an option the company gives to the buyers or a diy project. There's a lot of kids who hate wearing them (younger self) so it could make the experience a lot more enjoyable for kids can express those preferences.

I got the same truck and harness because I saw how convenient it was, and it is. our daughter is secure in her seat until her tantrums starts and she becomes a contortionist and somehow escapes from it. Thanks for the idea. We'd been using the EZ-ON from eSpecialneeds, and while it's secure, it takes too long to put on and adjust. We still make caregivers use (and know how to use!) the EZ-ON. But after seeing your video, I started using a set of drybag/backpack shoulder straps in our family car to keep the car's own shoulder strap in place. These straps have a swivel clip on each end. I clipped the bottoms to the existing LATCH system lower anchors, and the uppers to 1" split rings I put around the headrest posts. Works well to keep our kid secure when they're feeling "froggy".

Has she been able to slip out from underneath all of that because there is no buckle between the legs? Because that’s what I’m dealing with, but I don’t want to have to outfit my kid in a zipper harness that has to be put on and adjusted outside of the car first. It’s useless for quick trips and situations in which we must be able to get in and out of car quickly.

I completely understand that you use the harness to hold the car seat belt in the correct place and to keep Abbie in the seat but I cant help but wonder, ive seen Abbie rock in the seat quite vigorously and the harness (even though its not installed properly like you would to have it as a full functioning harness) it does stop her from going to far unlike what the normal belt would because they retract. When in just a normal seatbelt i know they are designed to soften to blow by stretching a little when you're in an impact and it has a stopping mechanism when you pull it hard so you dont get a sudden stop but does having the harness stop the normal belt from functioning how its supposed to do by not allowing the person when in an accident have that stretching of the car belt? Seatbelts cause more injuries than people realise wether it be from a low impact to a high impact crash, you get bruises and whiplash all the way to internal bleeding just from what is supposed to be a safety device.

That looks quite different from what I used to see on the school bus, but uh I recall we had some violently out of control people with mental disabilities, and what was used did not have buckles accessible to the person sitting in it. If they could they would stand up and walk around the bus while we are still moving. We had worse problems then that which I will not go in to.

Curious question I thought in one video you said you had an indicator that Abbie has autism on her seatbelt . Where did you put it? Or am I wrong? I just wanted to know because I have have a daughter with autism and we have one of the Seatbelt covers her seatbelt that we have a medical alert signal on her seatbelt to alert paramedics or firefighters of her medical condition on the inside. I just sewed a pocket inside the seatbelt cover and then I typed on the computer her medical conditions and folded the paper then I put it in the pocket. Even though my daughter is able to talk she can’t remember a lot about herself to tell anyone about herself. She know enough to tell them to look inside her seatbelt cover. When I say seatbelt cover it’s one of those covers that was meant to cushion the seatbelt near your neck to keep it from rubbing on your neck. Thank you for sharing your life with us.

The 5 point prevents "sub-marine-ing"... when if they are not quite sitting upright the person would side out from under the lap belt (all modern cars use the lap-sash type belt). 🤔Most harnesses keep the restraint in the correct position, over the body-- not on the neck. The seat belt is the restraint😀

For younger special needs kids who may need that extra support in order to stay safe in the car, I would recommend consulting a Child Passenger Safety Technician...

Pretty crazy you made this video bc I've been thinking about asking why she still has the harness in priscilla's car but not in any other vehicle she rides in! Does she slip out of it or try taking it off while in your truck or when she's with summer Isaiah or becka ect... Just curious only bc we don't really see video of her when she's with other people driving
