Don't be fooled by the fact that it is a sporter weight barrel. Back in the 80/90's I used to shoot an Anschutz 1813 match rifle and a friend used a Walther match rifle, he also had a BSA Sportsman 5. The BSA had a shortened barrel, moderator and scope base added (all home made), it looked like a piece of junk! At 50 meters and 100 yards, with Lapua Pistol Trainer ammo it would group around half the size groups that our "Match" rifles would with Midas/Dominator!
I have the heavy barrelled varmint version of this rifle. Tight chamber and adjustable headspace on these so that you can really clamp that cartridge down. They shoot really well and I’ve taken quite a few club championships with mine.
The fact that it often shoots a good group in two different places is a good indicator that something is loose in the system. Check it thoroughly from the bedding to the scope and see if you can't find something. Also, playing with the bedding screw torque might help.
I’ve had them all over the years Sako, anschutz and bought a CZ a few years ago. It shoots every bit as good as rifles 2-3 times its cost ! I’m sold on CZ
That’s good shooting, light crisp trigger pull oh ya me too I gotta have that ! Believe it or not my tightest group I shot with my bolt gun was done using CCI Mini Mags !! But prior to that I went through some of the same match ammo you fired !
Gut wrenching Sako don't make this any more. The finnfire II a more recent version although not as good is now discontinued as well. Should never have sold it
I have the varmint model from 1998 and mine loves eley sport ammo, 1 hole groups at 50m all day. Mine also has a set trigger option and it goes off at the lightest touch Looking forward to seeing more vids on this rifle
I have bought a few from Logan. Always 100% honest. I'm glad you bought that Sako because it was tempting me. So, will we ever see a second video on that Steyr Zephyr II? That rifle is in my hoard now.
Sako's do tend to be well built, nice rifles. They definitely pay attention to QC and their machining is not sloppy at all. While not every one will set world records on average they do shoot well and from the ones I've seen in various calibers, tend to shoot above what we consider factory grade for accuracy. You have a nice rifle there and it looks to have potential with some trial of ammos to find the perfect match.
Here in the UK I lightened my P94 varmint with a different trigger spring from Valkyrie rifles. I also stuck one in my hmr quad as its the same type of trigger.
I've been using the so pistol match to shoot NRL22. Its pretty good once you get your velocity trued up. I personally don't have a chrono so had to do it the old fashioned way and at least in my rifle it shoots quite a bit slower than these rifle match I had previously been using.
I have the same rifle with a Leupold 4-12X40 scope. I tried number of cartridges with it. Of them it liked Eley high velocity, RWS Club, BBM, SK Pistol, and Blaser. It did not shot Eley Subsonic and CCI Segmented that well.
Hey Joe. I'd be interested in watching you work through some .22 squirrel zappers just for the fun of it. I had a Dakota once. Wish I still did. Sold it and bought a Sako Quad system. All four rimfires.
Shoots like my Steyr Zephyr, either shoots lights out with the right ammo, or just so-so with the rest. The Steyr is REALLY light rifle and hard to shoot well.
Bearing in mind this is a hunting rifle, not a bench rest unit. Saying that, my Norinco shoots under an inch at 50 with cci standards, and is excellent on rabbits. I just polished the bolt, stripped it and cleaned all that good cosmoline out, and changed the trigger spring. great for $125 Aussie dollars
Joe, congrats on that rifle . A Yo Dave spring got my p94s to 14 oz . DIP makes a wide trigger shoe that feels very nice imo. Yeah, that sporter front end can be wobbly . Brownells sells a bench rest adaptor that screws into the front swivel stud hole. . My takedown screw torque sweet spot is 17-18 lbs . SK Rifle Match and Center X does very good in mine . Oh yeah, mine likes a firm hold, none of the free recoil stuff . I’m excited for you if you can’t tell 🎉.
I had an old Sako Finfire. I was very disappointed with the .22 rifle. I would get carbon buildup on the breach, that was a pain to keep clean. The accuracy wasn’t as good as I expected either. I ended up trading it towards a Kimber Classic 22. Now that’s a beautiful rifle. I also have a Brno model 1, which was at least as accurate as the old Sako. Enjoy playing with your new rifle.
Hard to believe you posted this video 3 weeks ago. It just showed up on my screen on 10/19/24. Question I have is what is a good scope for a 22 for target shooting that one of us poor folks could buy? Thanks..SEMPER FI
@CyclopsJoeVideos I hope you didn't misunderstand my point. I didn't see any wrong with most of your groups. I too strive for perfection, we have to to get better. I was impressed with your results. I didn't hear what distance you were shooting. Thanks for replying.
I love mine. Shoots great. Even found a gentleman that makes custom metal magazines and ordered 2. Amazing quality. 541 Custom Sporter is hard to beat. Thomas, North Mississippi. Where are you from?
I don't like leaving bad comments. However I have to say I'm not that impressed with the results, to be honest I expected a little more. I say this because I have a Sako 98, which also is a sporter rifle. It out shoots whatever I saw here and with standard CCI or any of the better fodder. I do use a bipod instead of the rest. I'd like to save this video and hope to be able to add a set of targets with some different ammo.
The best ammo for the 50 yard match is norma tech 22 ammo. It works real well with a CZ and a vintage Marlin microgroove barrel both action 22 from a marlin model 25 all the way up to a marlin 780 and Marlin 880 at a fraction of the cost of a custom built gun.😊
Doesn't need an i-phone for downrange, needs a tripod bracket with a foldup sheet of T1 steel to protect the phone😁. Seriously. Put tripod on range, adjust phone to film target, fold up or seat the small 4" x 7" sheet in place & you're done. You can shoot an old piece 5/16" or 3/8" T1 silhouette target steel forever with a rim fire & not make a dent. Local high school or community college could make something for you out of scrap. Your downrange camera needs armor.
That the rifle you told me about? 😮 Very nice rifle man!! 👍 Joe? Does that Eley Biathlon have the same nasty wax on it as the others? Or is it clean for frozen temps?
I have the Steyr that was used on a previous video. In limited shooting, I have got some good groups with SK Rifle Match. Best group so far is 0.30" at 50. That said, I handled a P94S at a gun shop and it had just about the sweetest action ever. Unfortunately, the stock was rough so I didn't buy it.
@jonnyd5106 I'm sure it would shoot great from a bench. I know where one is for sale, but I'm not sure how I feel about taking it out of it's gorgeous original stock.
I purchased one of these when they first came out in the mid 90's, it was my main squirrel rifle for years, mine liked RWS Match rifle and Lapua Center-x best
All my bolt actions are Sako. Have the P94 Finnfire Range, the heavy barrel target version of that rifle. Please, for all us Sako fanatics, learn to pronounce the name correctly. Beautiful guns. I'd love to have one.

You should get the Sako Quad. The trigger adjustment with a YoDave spring is couple of cents. And its way better then buying an oldy.

The Sako P57R, cal.22.

Sako rifles are supreme in my book. So costly. Finn Bear, Vixen, and Forester hit the hammer right on the nail. Beyond my budget.
I have a sako quad .22lr it shoots exceptionally well with eley sport, single hole groups
I need to look into one of those
