    It is so funny, my uncle Martin served as radio operater on the snowberry during all of ww2. He told me once he and a few others were having a smoke on the top roof by the front steering deck whe they saw a torpedo approaching them midship and before they could spring into action the torpedo pasted under them as the corvettes tended to Bob on the water.

    It's nice to see that "ederly sailors" still indulge in their hobbies. Modeling needs a certain degree of mental maturity, a lot of experience, a steady hand and technical knowledge to build models in "museum quality". Younger people prefer videogames, but seasoned persons are rather rare in this field; for modeling it's just the other way round...

      Thanks and the age thing is an interesting observation. If I look at my analytics a tiny proportion (much less than 1%) are in the 18-34 age bracket. I find that most viewers are a similar age to me. Maybe the expense of kits, accessories and materials may also be a factor as well as time: I suppose retirement gives plenty of it to see through a build like this.

    Hello from Italy, I'm building this exact model after a 20 / 25 years hiatus from model kits (minus the Pontos set, I wanted to keep it simpler for my first real kit since I was a kid). I'm very glad I found your video, I'll try to tag along but my full time job doesn't allow for much building time during the work-week I'm afraid.
    Also the hull in my kit was quite a bit more warped than yours, it felt I needed to be an octopus to put it together and had to order some putty to fully cover the small gaps.
    I appreciated the lower cost of the kit, especially for a "new beginner" like me, but it comes with its issues.

    Good ol' Fridays and Pontos!
    After flipping my 1/72nd hull about my cramped model desk i can see the wisdom in the 1/144, shame it wasn't 1/200 to scale with your Hood model. A little miffed you are doing the Canadian model but i can still borrow your wisdom and insight for my bigger HMS Bluebell as the differences are not so different. Great start on yours, i'm still fixing up the stern plating on mine!
    FYI. I found a picture showing the wooden deck panel on a 'Flower' and it was a good four inches higher than the steel plate.

    I'm looking at paints and I actually want to make this model as close to HMS Clematis as I possibly can as my great grandad served on the ship.
    Would you by any chance have any tips as to find out which colours to use to replicate the colours of it when it was in service in WW2?
    Also, a brand that you prefer?
    Any link you can share would be fantastic.
    Hope it looks half as good as yours

      thanks Sean. I suggest you go over to sovereign hobbies where you’ll find information about colour schemes. Flowers carries different colours so you need to know what applies to your particular build. If you get the RN colour names from sovereign you can match them to your your own paint range or use their own colourcoats range.

    I rebuilt one of these kits - the old multi-coloured sprue version! - into a reasonable facsimile of HMCS Alberni once. It was through my work, and a rare charitable job on the part of my boss, so there was no question of a set of metal details being thrown into the bargain. The kit had been donated to an upstart museum and the operator was desperate for someone to save the day and turn into the -ahem- short forecastle version corvette he required. The result was a grade B, I think, as I hadn't the time or resources to build a true museum model, but the client was over the Moon with the results.
    Imagine the air going out of my sails when I took the opportunity to visit a hobby shop in another town and saw, on display, a beautifully, built, re-detailed, and weathered version of the kit. The owner confirmed the incorporation of a metal details kit, and my satisfaction with my Alberni just sank! I have to take satisfaction in having made one of very few short-bow models out there.

    • @TheModelShed

      Something I learned many years ago is that it doesn’t matter how good we think we are there’s always someone better or with some new ways of doing something. I’d build a model then go to a model show and wonder why I bothered.

  • @thanassisveggos627
    @thanassisveggos627 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Maybe Revell expects you to put some sprue lengths into those holes on the inside of the hull so they can brace the hull. The hull seems a bit flimsy.

    Talking of the Pontos instructions, I generally view them on my laptop or iPad, the one ig advantage of which is that you can zoom in which can be very handy for working out which way to fold some of the smaller pieces.

    • @andrewgillis3073
      @andrewgillis3073 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In addition, any changes / improvements will be incorporated in the on-line instructions. But the idea of putting the Pontos instruction in a plastic sleeve is also good (some people aren't comfortable with electronics). I've found Pontos sheets to be extremely fragile and easily abraded.
