In this video, I take you on a typical whirlwind day of teaching in the elementary school (public school). This grade level (4th grade) was departmentalized which means students switch classes. I teach English Language Arts which include reading, writing, grammar, and social studies. I have a morning class, then the students switch to another classroom for their math and science subjects. Lovely Video! Sorry for chiming in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you heard the talk about - Schallingora Font Storage Scheme (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is an awesome one of a kind product for finding teaching jobs online minus the normal expense. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my friend at last got great success with it.

    I've been going back and fourth with what I want to major in when I'm in college. When I was much younger, I would always play teacher and for the longest time I had my mind set that I wanted to become a teacher one day. Then, I went through my nursing, criminal justice, and english major phase. While those still sound great to me, something clicked within me the other day. I finally made up my mind and I want to become an Elementary school teacher in the future. It's odd how I had already figured out what I wanted to do with my life at such a young age, I just hadn't realized it. I'm so excited to see what the future holds. Good luck to you!! 💜

    You are living my absolute dream future life! I am sophomore in high school right now, and I've literally just now decided I want to be a teacher. I originally was set on journalism because of my "excellent" writing skills and my dad wanting to be become a journalist, but being a teacher was always in the back of my head. I have just always loved the whole atmosphere and everything around elementary school, specifically the older grades 3-5. This video gave me an insight of exactly what I want to be doing. Also aside from teaching, you're living that Disney life, lol! I lived in Florida in 2011 and I had annual passes to Disney, but unfortunately I moved back to Georgia in 2012. So I said after college, I'm settling down in Orlando and getting my Disney annual pass back lol! I rarely leave comments but I feel like I just had to express this! Lol.

It's a lot of hard work every day but it's worth it. I say you can still go for your journalism degree (your writing skills would definitely help in teaching writing!) and just double major with education somehow! A lot of people do double majors. At my school district, the teachers get to school between 5:00 AM or 6:00 AM, cause teachers in the district start teaching at 7:50 AM, 7:50 AM is when the students get to class, my district has our lunchtime during 11:00 AM, for the elementary its' 11:30 to go to lunch, the middle school (which i am currently an 8th grader in) starts at 11:16 if you have first lunch schedules, for second lunch where most of the middle school goes to lunch goes at 11:20 AM, as for the high school, they start lunch at 11:45 because the middle school uses the cafeteria at the high school, so the high schoolers wait for us to finish our lunch, plus the middle school is right next to the high school, students walk to the side of the school and go through the doors and find the cafeteria. Then at 2:20 PM, the elementary school kids go home, 3:00 PM, the middle school kids go home. Same for the high school, the high school students leave at 3:00 PM. On Wednesdays, all the students in all the schools, like elementary, middle school and the high school leave at 1:00 PM on Early Release Wednesdays, which is every Wednesday, we do have breaks in between, but i don't wanna get into that on this. Hope you had fun reading about my district times!

    It's funny but when you're an adult you miss elementary school. I would love to spend a whole day back in school. Schools should have parent or family member day in school at least once a year. That would be a valuable experience for the adult and for the children. And at the end of the day they would share what they learned about going back to school for a day.

    • @GracejoyTV
      @GracejoyTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your thoughts! Yeah some schools have like a 'Teach In' where we have family members and other community members come in a talk about their careers to the children. They range from people working from NASA, a ballerina, a stock broker, firefighter, nurse, etc. It's a really fun super informative day!

    • @GracejoyTV
      @GracejoyTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Rachel Williams thanks for finding my video! I had an idea and preference of which grade I wanted to teach. (3rd grade) Volunteering in many different grade levels and spending time with kids and of course your internship will help you decide which grade your personality would match with. I didn't set out to look for a specific grade just as long as it's elementary because that's what my degree is on. I think it's limiting in a way if you push for a certain grade level. Yes, teach 4th!

      I graduated this month. :)
      Now to get licensed and teach. It's been a long road. For some reason, I think of this video sometimes. It's been very difficult getting through school. Now I'm not sure I want a master's. Time will tell.
      I'm in Vegas. Teachers start here at $43k and top out around $95K. CCSD is in a crisis. Nevada is ranked 49th in the country for education. Student teaching didn't go well. My host teacher didn't do what my university required and I couldn't complete my student teaching, but I graduated without a license. Now, I have to take additional coursework through my district and get licensed through their Alternate Route to Licensure program. It's so frustrating, and I've questioned whether it's truly been worth it or not. I own a business, but I feel like teaching could be rewarding and bring some security to my family. I've got a few months to see if I'll get licensed and apply.

    Still split on whether to do elementary ed or special ed, I already signed up for special ed thinking everything would be alright but more I'm reading into it I'm not so sure. As a guy I know it's a breeze to get a job in either field so I'm not too worried about that. Also props on the Miku and Rin pop figures.

    • @GracejoyTV
      @GracejoyTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Foggy in undergrad, I was originally doing elementary ed major but when I realized how many other students had the same major and I knew how tough getting a job could be, I switched to special ed (called exceptional education in FL) so I could have a bit of an edge over the others. It really helped me get my foot in the door. At the university where I studied, the Ex. Ed. major INCLUDES K-6 (among other things) so it's sort of like getting 2 degrees in one! There's a lot of certification exams you have to pass that's why we're considered 'Highly Qualified Teachers' (I also have my ESOL, Reading certificates along with my graduate degree/certificate in autism.) I say go for the special ed (just my opinion), what are you not sure of? ps. Thanks for noticing my Miku and Rin Pops!

    • @FogFTW
      @FogFTW 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +happygj79 I just know in comparison to elementary ed, special ed is much harder. I heard all the IEP paperwork you have to do is a nightmare, not just that but I heard in general it's a much more stressful job because there's so much more you have to keep track of. I also read 50% of people that go into special ed quit after 5 years and 75% quit after 10, not sure how accurate that is and I shouldn't listen to random statistics but still the thought scares me. I'm still a senior in high school but I got accepted to a college for the major Special Education Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (PreK-8) and a minor in Communication Disorders, I feel like a combination of that major with that minor will be perfect. I don't know, it's super far away to when I would actually be teaching but I'm just looking too far ahead in life, I tend to do that. I know special ed will be more difficult but in the end will probably end up being more rewarding, having a strong connection to the kids you teach who really need the help seems worth it regardless of the large amounts of paperwork and parent meetings you need to do in comparison to regular elementary ed. Part of me feels like regular elementary ed would be more fun and enjoyable but special ed would be more difficult but more rewarding in the long run. Again I still have a while to make up my mind.

    • @GracejoyTV
      @GracejoyTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Foggy wow, it's pretty impressive how much you know about the profession already! That's great! You're right about the high burn out rate and all the IEP meetings and paperwork but I wasn't thinking negatively when I was working on my major. My thinking was that I have more patience for children who have disabilities because they obviously have greater needs and when they truly don't get something, or misbehave, it's because they have greater challenges than others which also means we have greater impact on them as well. I think my heart is equally divided between special ed and regular ed :) Keep up the good work!

    • @GracejoyTV
      @GracejoyTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      helicoptherese In deciding what courses and career to take, think about what you've done and what experiences you've enjoyed in the past. For example, have you worked with kids like being a mentor, camp counselor, Sunday school teaching, tutoring, etc things like that. If you have a history of enjoying work with children and making a difference and you connect with them easily, that may be a good indication that you may enjoy teaching. Think deeply and pray about it! Teaching is a super hard job but very rewarding.

      @GracejoyTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your inquiry. That classroom had windows (several actually). You probably just missed it because I had to cover them with blue paper so that the projection from the document camera can be visible. When the window blinds were up, the students couldn't see what was on the board so I had to adapt and tailor the classroom to ensure my students are able to see during my instruction. Good luck on your research!

    Being a teacher seems scary. I mean how the heck are you supposed to answer all their questions and become an expert in all those classes? Smh...

    • @GracejoyTV
      @GracejoyTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, being a teacher can be intimidating. I used to think that way as well, 'how am I going to answer all their questions?' Well, more importantly, we have to teach kids that there is a right place, at the right time to ask the right kind of questions. It's not an easy thing to do because young kids are very impulsive. We have to teach them to think.
      Also, I'm not afraid to admit when I don't know the answer. Nobody knows everything! I tell them I can look it up!
      Secondly, you don't have to be an expert in all those classes. Being an expert comes with years of practice. In the meantime, you can study and prepare as much as you need while you're getting the experience! Go after your dreams!

    Nice video here, thanks for uploading it.
    I'm graduating with a bachelor's in film in December but i was thinking that i could maybe get into teaching (study for a year 1/2 or 2 more). Two of the biggest doubts for me though are the fact that i'm quite a bit shy and introverted and i've also heard that it can be difficult to land a job as an Elementary school teacher.
    May i ask some quick questions?
    1. Is it likely for an Elementary School Teacher to eventually earn at least around 50k a year?
    2. How hard is it really to find a job? What can i do to increase my chances?
    Thanks.

    • @GracejoyTV
      @GracejoyTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Spore thanks so much for finding my 'Day in the Life' video! Congrats on graduating with your film degree this December! That's super awesome! Are you doing an internship? So what is it about teaching as a career that you motivates you to extend your college studies? I considered myself a shy person as well when I was growing up but I always knew that I had a special and natural connection with kids from a young age so that helped.
      To answer your questions:
      1. IF you last long enough in the teaching field (teacher burnout is real!), then absolutely, you can earn at least 50K a year (maybe 10 years or longer). It's a labor of love and teachers are certainly not in the field for the money!
      2. I don't think it's that hard to find a job and here's what would help your chances (in MY opinion): if you have a good long history of working with children (ie. volunteer hours in other schools, community events, college events where they work with children (one Spring Break, I spent my entire week that equaled to over 100 volunteer hours teaching in 2 schools in downtown Birmingham, Alabama), church events, summer camps, etc. etc) I did a ton of those and I believe they helped me get my job.
      Another thing that helped me stand out compared to others is my willingness to go above and beyond what was expected of me and other interns were willing to do. I'm talking everything legal of course, keeping in mind the Code of Ethics that all good teachers uphold to.
      You might be thinking: 'I'm not doing all that' which is perfectly fine. I'm just speaking from my own experience. If you have a heart to make an impact in children's lives, then you should let nothing hold you back! Go for it!

    I’m considering becoming an elementary teacher but it’s the whole lesson planning that I just feel like I wouldn’t be able to know how to do. I want to become a teacher assistant in the meantime but with this pandemic it’s been difficult. I already graduated college and I regret not going for my teaching credentials while in college. Idk why it took me so long to decide 😔

    • @GracejoyTV
      @GracejoyTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thanks for sharing your thoughts and concerns. You will get multiple classes in the College of Education (wherever that is) where will practice lesson planning to know which components need to be included (ie. standards, lesson objective, assessment, rubrics, etc.) Keep trying being a Teacher Assistant. There's always a need there.
      It's not too late to go back to college to get the rest of your credentials! I was 31 when I got my bachelor's degree and 33 when I got my Master's degree. Eight years after that, I got my Education Specialist degree! Go for it!

I did part of my internship in a pre-K classroom and although it was a great experience, it helped me to see that my preference are the bigger, higher elementary kids because they are more independent. • @GracejoyTV
      @GracejoyTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Chrissy, thanks so much for sharing your story. Happy to hear that you've always helped younger kids with their homework. Congrats on graduating in a week! What an accomplishment! Glad that you decided to be an elementary school teacher.
      To answer your question on how to deal with bad days: you deal with it just like any other bad days. For me, it's advance decision-making which means, know in advance that you WILL have those bad days but you have to make a decision in advance that although it may get you down for a bit, you will not give up on teaching. Make a decision that your positive attitude towards those bad days will be the DIFFERENCE MAKER. When you have bad days, don't forget to look at the BIG PICTURE in the grand scheme of things. We are making a difference in children's lives whether you see it today, in 2 days, or in 20 years!
      How do I feel about being surrounded by so many little people? You get used to it. Remember that they are children and have not reached maturity. For some people, it may be harder to deal with adults who are still immature. At least children are exactly that: they are children so you have to love them and care for them and know that they are very impressionable and that it's a great blessing to be around them daily. They will remember how much you cared for them longer than you remember them! Sorry for the long reply but I take great pride in teaching! Best wishes to you!

    Im sorry but speaking from experience, this is the dream. Reality, at least for me and many other teachers out there, are chaos. You're faced with many tasks, some you didnt even study to do, and the actual bosses are not your employers but the parents who want their child to be the best and blameless human beings that have ever walked on this planet. It takes guts, passion and hard work to be a teacher. I say that if you really want to be a teacher, then go for it. But if someone forced you take up education and live a career you didnt ask for ypurself, get out while you still have a chance. This profession is not a walk in the park and though you have advantages, the disadvantages can get pretty stressful.

      I also worked with teens for many many years as a Youth Leader/Mentor so I can pretty much work with a large age range but having volunteered and putting in lots of hours at local schools and my community and my church helped me decide that my preference is to be an elementary teacher. It seemed the most fun as well! Although there's a great deal of work involved. But that's with any profession!
      So in summary, try to get involved in as many ways/events/volunteer with different age ranges and sooner or later you'll find your best match! Let me know how everything goes!

      Hi Ana! I am thankful for the school where I teach. When I was young, the schools I attended in the Philippines needed a lot of things so today as a teacher, I make sure that my students get the best of what I can offer! Keep up the good work and don't give up on your dreams!

    Do they change class? I'm asking because I live in Indonesia and in Indonesia they don't change class except for P.E and if its lunch time they bought a lunch from home,my dad says I am going to Canada later and go to school in canada

    • @GracejoyTV
      @GracejoyTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question! Some years they switch classes and some years students just stay with one teacher except for P.E./Music/Art so it all depends on the school. Classes always line up and go to lunch at the cafeteria. Good luck on going to school in Canada! Keep me updated!

      Thank you soo much Teacher Julia! Soo important to have an organized classroom for our sanity and for the happiness of our children! We need to create a learning environment where there's clear distinction of where every thing goes. Kids need structure and when they know where to put things, I think it fosters accountability and ultimately, responsibility! Thanks so much for your sweet words!

    This seems like such an exciting job. I'm 21 and in college right now for nursing, but I work in the hospital and its making me reconsider what I thought I wanted to do.. I think I might want to be a school teacher instead. Its always been a dream of mine since I was a kid. Do you have any advice for me ? lol

    • @GracejoyTV
      @GracejoyTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +melissalucy21 Thanks! It IS an exciting job. Sometimes good exciting, and sometimes bad exciting! Hehe. Every career has it's pros and cons. Glad you're in college for nursing! I have lots of friends who are either nurses or are studying to be a nurse so good for you! I would say, think deeply and really weigh your pros and cons clearly.
      Think back to your life and see where you've been able to contribute more. It also depends on what you consider your strengths and weaknesses. Are you able to connect more with sick people in the hospital or do you have a natural connection with kids or the youth? Both teachers and nurses have incredible patience and passion but in different ways. Depends on what you want to put up with and what you see yourself doing for many years. No matter what you choose, I believe it will be the right one for you!

    I feel bad for the one child with his desk separate from the other kids....teachers that do that hurt the child's confidence more than they may think.

      Are you a teacher? That student needed and asked for the space that you saw. The student needed more room so I accommodated and provided the student that space they needed. As you saw, the student was still part of our classroom arrangement which at the time (3 years ago) was U-shape. Don't feel bad, the student flourished and was able to accomplish more tasks.

    • @GracejoyTV
      @GracejoyTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much! Yeah, I think the U-shape seating works pretty well as far as teacher-proximity. The carpet in the middle also allows for multiple uses (ie. student reports/presentations, teacher read-alouds, and large group activities).
