Thank you!! This hits home on several of the points I've been questioning about the surface vs other devices. Too many people hate on the Surface for not having the absolute best drawing application even though it is not meant to be used solely as a drawing tablet and thus is not up to par with brands like Wacom. Having said this, when I went to my local bestbuy and practiced on it for a while, I found the experience to be extremely enjoyable. It truly felt like I had a FANTASTIC drawing tablet to work with. I think your review places emphasis in all the right places!
@@CladioJulianoArt Bought it over the weekend. Best ergo stylus so far. Been doing this stuff for 20 yrs. Just don't like how I have to buy 3rd party apps just to change the buttons and to have hoover click but it's what we go so far. And no I'm not taking about launching apps with buttons. Going to take it through a quick design project this weekend using Photoshop, zbrush and 3dsmax on a surface go. Lets see how much of this can we inject into a real pipeline.
It works with Surface Go, but I have a few complaints about that compatibility. The charging tray is USB-A so it can't charge from the USB-C which is the only USB port on the Surface Go. So you need a dongle or a breakout hub to charge the pen, which you kind of need anyway. It's also too short to stick well to the side of the Surface Go. There's top and bottom magnets, and the Slim can't *quite* reach between them, so it can only connect to one of those, so it detaches too easily but sort of works.
Hello! Are Slim Pen and Slim Pen 2 very different in how they work? I have the 1st generation and I can not understand if it needs to be changed. Thank you.
Slim Pen 2 is better. It’s input is better than the first generation and it has a different tip design/architecture so tilt is much more natural on slim pen 2. All around the input is better, however I think that is in combination with the newer machines like Pro 8 and Pro 9. So if you have an older gen I’m not sure if you would see the difference. Although I still think you’d get more natural tilt with the newer tip.
The Pencil has the better input technology for art- with much lower latency, and no jitter. But the Slim pen is my favorite for Surface. My Duo review will be up soon with the slim pen. For notes its great, for art with the Duo no softwares are fully setup for it so tilt doesn't work, just basic pen pressure works from the system level.
Thank you for the video. I just got the slim pen and I wanted to know if you know any tip replacements for this device. As it's a new tip design I cannot find any. pls help!
i spent some time in-store with the stock round pen. i found the springy feel really annoying for quick hatching lines. the lines were short and quick. it was hard to tell when the pen made contact and sometimes the lines would register late or not at all... looked pretty sloppy, using sketchbook pro. is there a tip for the round pen that doesnt have that springy feel? btw great video
Sebastian Weber Thanks. Well, there is the pen tip kit which has a triangle tip variant in it that is similarly shaped to the tip of the slim pen, but they are a bit different in design and very different in feel. The one in the pen tip kit has a lot less tooth. Using that triangle tip in the kit will give you less spring action, but the trade off is a lot less grit/tooth when drawing. The slim pen doesn’t have any major spring action- another reason I liked it. You can also check out the Wacom bamboo ink dual protocol pen, or an Adonit ink pro- but neither of them have the same low latency that the stock pen or slim pen have.
I don't know the exact amount of hours but it lasts a long time. I have used it for days without charging, but it also depends on which version you have.
Michael Ng I’m not sure if the pen hibernates to save battery- there’s no indication so far because when picked up its just ready to go. It might though. Hard to tell.
The pen doesn’t turn off or on, you just pick it up and it works and the battery can go for a good chunk of time before needing a charge, but the new slim pen 2 can only be charged in the newer surface type cover. They no longer sell a dock, so the slim pen 2 can only be charged with a newer surface type cover. This video was the first generation.
The surface pen was hard for me to hold, so big and round and clunky. I dropped it once and it broke within 5 days of owning it. That's why I chose this pen instead. Hopefully it will be better
There isn’t, at least not that I know of. I don’t think there was ever a way to charge it wirelessly. The charging dock needed to be plugged into a port in order for it to work.
Hard to say because it really comes down to personal preference. The round pen has a more recognizable feel for writing with the round barrel, but the slim pen has a harder more pencil like tip which I think hand writers would like.

I want to know its stability before actually consider buying the slim pen. Thank you.
Curios. Cat It won’t go flying off with a few small bumps, but it won’t stick on and stay on in a bag. At least I don’t think. But, it can also stick pretty strong onto the bezel of the screen, and can attach a bit to the outside of the keyboard like I showed in the video. The round pen just has an extremely strong hold.
I got Surface Pro 7 and Surface Slim Pen. The Pen works fine but it can't pair. I press the upper eraser button for many second but no lights appear at all. Could you tell me how to solve this issue?
It should pair with the Surface hub app or in your Bluetooth settings. Plug in the dock and put the pen in it and it should pair. Charge the pen for a while.
Microsoft Surface Pro (5th Gen) (Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB). hi my surface pen tip is not working. If I buy a replacement what is your recommendation?
I mean it kind of does by the charging port but it doesn’t officially attach like the old ones did to the older surface pros. The Pro 8 stores the newest slim pen in its keyboard. This is the first gen one.
I’ve always wondered if it could stick to the side of the surface computers like the regular surface pen or is it only for that Surface pro x compartment?
It's def not a design that works for everyone. It works well for me because I float my hand when I work and switch from regular hold to the traditional style hold.
Siddhartth I didn’t find it to have that high of an initial force. Very light strokes were registering with little issue for me. I felt the difference between the round pen, but more so because of the difference in tip hardness. I find the eraser to have really poor initial force and I barely ever use it because of that, but that’s also because it doesn’t have its own separate system wide curve.
@@CladioJulianoArt can you please compare the initial activation force with awacom cintiq pro line? The newer wacom Cintiq pros are not exactly feather touch like a Apple Pencil but they are definitely very acceptable for me. I am really curious about about the difference.

The screen protector I heard about is called “paper thin” and it’s supposed to add a bit of resistance so that when you write on it, it actually feels like you are writing on paper
can you erase with this pen?
Yes
Does this pen work with Asus zen book laptop?
This is n-trig only pen. I think that uses Wacom AES.
Wow I’m so new to this I don’t even know what those are lol sorry I’m barley getting into graphic design and I just got the Asus laptop. If you don’t mind could you explain those two types of pens?
@@mannysteel4388 They are just two different pen technologies that aren't compatible with each other. I would check their website to see what pen tech it is and what pens are compatible with the machine. Pretty sure its Wacom AES but I'm not positive.
Cladio Juliano awesome great advice man! Thank you so much for the info and sorry I didn’t say this before but loved the video review really in depth and clear. I just really hope my laptop is compatible because I really want this pen haha
Is the Slim surface pen tip compatible with the round Surface pen?
no
Dad will buy it for me
No way was the N-trig/Surface pen the worse when Atmel & Synaptic pens exists in some HP devices(well not anymore as they moved to wacom aes).
True, that was the actual worst at that time.
hi, would this work on hp laptop envy x360 15"? thankss
It should, the envy is using N-trig technology I beleive.
thanks.. do you think it's possible to draw a portrait on hp laptop? if not, do you think ipad air 3 is ok or should i go with ipad pro
Could you please give a link for buying it from amazon
The big difference is always in "how the tips feel"...mmmm
I never make it work (tilt specially) with the surface pro 7. Bluetooth said paired after connected almost immediately. The pen without clip says connected at all times.
Bluetooth pairing is only for the top eraser button, the pen itself needs no connection to function. Tilt only works in software's properly setup for the pen. If its not working at all there might be something wrong w/the pen.
@@CladioJulianoArt Thank you so much for the time to answer. You clarified in such a simple way what the people at Microsoft never knew how to answer. Basically the pen works like the RAPHAEL 520 related with drawing. Although Raphael needs to be turned on. Wondering if the Slim Pen is "always turned on". Thanks Again My Friend..!!
@@denniskaparunakis3155 Yes it is always turned on my friend!

Is this pen compatible with the surface laptop 3?
Yep
I have a surface pro 4 and dont like its pen too thick and heavy. Feels unatural to write with. Im a samsung note enthusiast and love their pens. I rarely use my surface pen cuz i have and like many spens and alternatives from samsung and 3rd parties. Im debating getting a galaxy notebook over the newest surface pro and surface book cuz of spen and having a phone, tablet and laptop that can all use 1 pen. Its annoying in class if im taking notes by hand with spen and need to write something on the sp4. $150 pen isnt cheap or reasonable. Wacom beats emr all day...
Lol Wacom is EMR. Apple Pencil beats all.
I feel scammed by Microsoft after buying a slim pen and no charger. Now I can't use it unless I buy the charger for 50 aud.
I lost my charging port 😩
i dont go to microsoft HQ
Dad will go bro
Is it compatible with sp 4?
Yea, but you won't have access to the 4K pressure levels with the pro 4.
Thanks
the surface pen is much better
Aimbot DotCS It is a Surface Pen
@@CladioJulianoArt Nope, this video about Surface Slim Pen, so he said Surface Pen better ... i think there is a "slim" difference :) ha ha
