Ernie Els was a two-time major winner coming into The 131st Open Championship in 2002, but he hadn’t yet won the Claret Jug.
The South African won one of the most competitive tournaments in Open history, overcoming Stuart Appleby, Steve Elkington in a playoff and Thomas Levet in a sudden-death playoff, to win his first Open Championship.

I was on the practice putting green this year at the US Senior Open qualifier in Georgia this year…with Thomas Levet. I always remember this major, especially when the weather blew up Tiger on Saturday!
