@@NickyandCoco “I was like, I know you motherfuckers do SNL. So I will do it if you agree to help my music career for the rest of my life,” Renee quoted in the Cut, found via Kayla Says YT
Reneé mentioned she’s a very ambitious person with big dreams that are specific asf. She literally said the only way she saw herself getting into the music industry was through acting which is why she did TSLOCG in the first place; so ofc any opportunity she got to leave that show to pursue music she‘s gonna leave. She also manifested that she wants to do SNL (which she just did) and become an EGOT by the age of 40. So yeah this girl is here to stay for a long time and I’m excited for her.
Funny thing is that i discovered Reneé Rapp after listening to two songs that i saved just to notice they were from the same girl. In a way her career is being spread "organically". The algorithm gets you, and you stay. That's quality!
Same. “Too Well” just popped up in my stream randomly. It got stuck in my head and I could not find the song again. I was searching for weeks for it and typing stupid lyrics into google to figure it out. Then when it came back one day I made sure to remember her name.
“Your direction is more important than your speed.” I’m taking that everywhere. It’s going right next to one of my faves “don’t confuse motion with progress.” 🧘🏾♀️😮💨🥰🕯
ppl calling her an industry plant is sooo annoying like just admit you’re not up to date on the newest music artists! it’s okay to not know who people are!! she’s literally new, this is her mainstream breakthrough, ofc you probably have never heard of her. discrediting someone’s career and work just because YOU PERSONALLY don’t know her is crazy. takes less time to type “renee rapp” into google than it does to type “industry plant” into a random comment section
People don’t even know what industry plant actually means. It used to be used for people who pretended they came up independently or without a label, but they actually did have a lot of backing behind the scenes. It’s so funny when people call someone like Olivia Rodrigo an industry plant because she was literally on Disney, there was never an attempt to pretend she came up on her own. I feel like people have forgotten what traditional artist development is.
it’s SO refreshing to see an actress/artist that is so genuinely herself in every single way. she’s so vulnerable, authentic, unapologetic and open anytime she’s on a screen whether it’s acting, singing or in interviews and that is getting more and more rare these days. her insane talent and sense of humor are truly some of the most unique and memorable characteristics i’ve ever seen. her SNL performance of snow angel was out of this world. i don’t even know if she knows how good she is. watching her sing or talk or quite honestly do anything is addicting. i’m smitten with her, to no surprise, everyone should be!
Ashley Park also originated the role of Gretchen in Mean Girls on Broadway!!! She did this before Emily in Paris. Also Jaquel Spivey is a broadway actor who was the lead in a Strange Loop.
This is my first time coming across y'all, but I love the talking points y'all made so much! Seeing people call Reneé an industry plant is definitely weird when she's been so organically in the algorithm of different platforms. For me in particular I definitely have to thank TikTok for putting a clip of her just being her funny, talented self on The Terrell Show on my fyp back in August of last year, because it's what really made me keep my eye on her (in the midst of all the content I consume as a music enjoyer & kpop stan lol) to the point where I checked out her album Snow Angel a month later and fell in love with all the tracks and her vocal/lyrical delivery. Although, I didn't do my super big deep dive of her interviews, live performances, & broadway/theatre content until sometime earlier this month after her New Years Eve performance and the Mean Girls press tour had really got to rolling. I've only been a "hardcore stan" for a short time, but I'm already so so proud of her after her SNL guesting/performances and the fact that she's going to all these big music festivals soon. I'm just so excited for her ongoing journey and to see what she does for her sophomore album
As someone that got to see her live while she was touring the USA for her album. She is amazing live!!!! her recorded album honestly does not do her justice she is just insane live. literally one of the best concerts i've ever been to
Honestly Rene is smart for the way she moved to get to her end goal she booked a show to gain more of a fanbase and to get her to a place that she can make connects for music and then the show doing well especiallly cuz of her character and her music doing well is just the icing on the cake and I remember seeing Ariana grande basically saying she did the same thing when she got the Opportunity to audition for victorious
Funny that you mentioned it, Sabrina actually has her own production company called "At Last" and she has always wanted to make an Alice In Wonderland Musical that is set in a musical festival. She has teased this for YEARS.
Just a little add on, if no one has mentioned it yet, when she won the Jimmy's in high school she was sick. Like she had tonsillitis, and an infection.
I love your analysis of Renee here. It was cool to listen to something so in-depth. With your categories of artists, I'd put Beyonce as both a vocalist and a performer. I hear people comment on both her incredible vocal ability and performances all the time. Renee often cites her as a top vocalist and influence.
I first loved her in Sex Lives of College Girls. So it was such a delightful surprise when i learned she can fucking SING. She is so great and so smart, and SO FUNNY. I am addicted. LOVE HER
Please do the selena gomez effect!! I was obsessed with her when i was 9-13, id love to see an analysis of how exactly she rose & maintained her fame. I always watched her documentary (before she even came out with my mind and me, the one from like disney days) where she and her mom talked about how she got famous and i think it’d be interesting to cover
Yeah she's getting an EGOT eventually, the Grammy will be first and then its only a matter of time and good casting She's already done all 4 things, she'll start getting recognized for it soob
Hi i am of that older demographic you were talking about. But i have known of Renee since her start. Her voice is amazing and she is a little chaotic. Perfect combo!! Thanks for the deep dive.
Also about "branding herself as an artist": I think a major obstacle is also going to be the reputation Gen Z artists have rn. Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish are considered 'artists', not just singers or writers but truly artists, while pretty much every other contemporary is like a "Tiktok girly". Very short songs, quite generic following trends set by older artists or the two mentioned above and targeting Gen Z. A lot of older generations don't take them seriously. Reneé is doing a great job collaborating with older artists, *singing* and not being known for silly videos, but serious budget productions. Still, a lot of people are not giving her credit for her music, because they expect it to sound a certain way without even listening once. Let's see how it goes, her rise in fame and success over the past year has been insane.
Holy shit I’ve not seen that video in years omg. It’s crazy she started with all these things and also that video and the video of her going OFF with Natalie Weiss holding her leg up
This is the first time i'm watching ypur channel and i loved this. Reneè is truly iconic and I honestly feel so lucky to be able to witness her growth and follow her through her amazing future career. My girl is going places 🌟❤️🔥
When you guys discussed legacy being cemented by leaving at a peak - i immediately thought of an example in a different field. In the sport of formula 1 (a racing series), driver Nico Rosberg cemented his legacy by leaving at the peak of his career upon beating one of the greats, Lewis Hamilton, in the 2016 wdc title. Although his victory was a feat in and of itself, his immediate retirement led to a reputation he never could have maintained had he remained in the sport. It’s really interesting that the idea of peaks transfers through different industries!
I probably going to get hate for saying this. But let’s be honest the movie of Mean Girls was made for Reneè Rapp to put her more in the spotlight. Watching the movie for the second time made me realize that. It’s clearly that they wanted her to really shine in the movie. I listen to the most of the original soundtrack from the broadway show. And they cut a lot of the songs and cut some parts in Meet the Plastics songs only to showcase Reneè voice. I think that’s is the fact why people are saying she is an industry plant. The girl is very talented and she got a great voice.
Nope. It was actually the opposite way. They first announced it when they were still running the show on Broadway but it was post lockdown by the time casting started. The movie was originally set to go straight to Paramount+ but sometime after Reneè's album release they switched to a theatrical release probably because she was in the rise already. Also, about the soundtrack, that was a trainwreck including her songs. The only reason why it's not as bad as the others is bc of her voice, same goes for Jaquel and Auli'i.
I found your podcast from the clip you posted on tik tok!!!! Absolutely loooove the flowers she’s finally getting 🌹 she deserves it soooo down bad. Glad i’m not the only one who admires her perseverance enough to talk about it for 45 mins
Random tidbit: the MG musical movie started filming in early March, not January! Filming ended around April 20th for the spring fling shoots, but they might’ve done reshoots some time later(presumably post strike)
Best analyse here on TH-cam. Only i would not put her in one of three katogories. Her Lyrics are on a level like her voice and dance on snl wath a big show, snowangel Performance on SNL was art of its own
I love yall so much whenever you see this even though it’s kind of off topic, how to you feel about the rainbow and pink tie dye style shirt in the new mean girls that Regina wears when they go to her house? I’ve been asking my friends about it and I think everyone has mixed feelings on it
I completely agree on your take of not wanting vertical videos / Tiktoks in movies, but there's no denying that they served a purpose. It's portrayed very "boomer discovers the Internet for the first time", but when we're talking about high school drama nowadays it does involve Tiktok and the Internet in general, although the use is a bit excessive. Telling ppl to not use vertical videos in a movie like this is like telling ppl to not use the text messaging in modern teen movies, because that's just as cringe tbh. They're not going to start writing letters tho and calling is super unrealistic
SLOCG S3 hadn’t started filming and I believe it hasn’t yet as of February 2024. Bc of the writers strike, filming was on hold so she released tour dates. They may have interfered with potential filming dates but there was no certainty that they would be back.
I’d love to see a video on someone who had an instant/overnight rise to fame and made it work. Idk like lil nas, ice spice, Olivia Rodrigo or Tyla? Then again, they are still new and we kinda need to wait a bit to see if they stick so an older artist who’s like them and has been active for years?

She is literally a genius if that’s true wow
