    I would add that they like high current flow & high oxygenation. As the Rio Xingu river they come from has rapids & white-water, & they live in the rocks that cause them. My big Golden Nugget, will actually position itself in front of the pump outlet, with his fins all getting blown around. If I move the position of the pump outlet nozzle, it readjusts itself to be in front of the flow. I attached a fake plastic leaf in front of it, so it could suck to it upside down, & hold itself there in the strongest current. Low oxygen will also kill a golden pleco quick smart. Lots of oxygenation from a powerful air-pump & stone, & a powerful pump. & yes a dark place to totally hide that belongs purely to it, that other fish don't try & steal. My last Golden Nugget lived to 14yrs old. I have a huge range of plecos, but my longest living pleco, my first one, a common pleco. Lived to 27! if you wish to know my Plecostomus keeping knowledge before trusting what I say. Best food for Golden Nuggets (bar courgette. Has got more nutrients than cucumber) is a Repashy mix of 1/3rd Morning Wood, 1/3rd Bottom Scratcher & 1/3rd Grub Pie. Repashy powders that you make into a gel, doesn't pollute the tank when left in there, and plecos can rasp on it all day & other fish struggle to eat it, especially when you add the rubbery Morning wood (a real must if you have little driftwood in the tank, which you should do though). Available online or at all good aquarium supply stores. A must for any pleco owner. Best stuff ever invented! & no, I don't work for them. lol. Examples her www.repashy.co.nz/collections/all but there will be a Repashy website for your country. Cheers & nice Nugget bro!

      @@barugongameroff2914 Yup: darken the water with almond Catappa leaves pinned under it's cave/tube, or whatever to hold them down until soaked & have driftwood that stains the water with tannins (correct type soft, tropical drift wood). Don't use a mega bright white light bulb, yellowy softer light is better, or just low watts, for your lighting, and don't have large fish like cichlids in the tank, as cichlids hunt them naturally, and the pleco thinks any big fish will eat it. I only have other fish up to 70-80cm max in the tank with them, but best with peaceful fish like Pearl Gouramis & clown loaches etc. Any predators, the pleco knows and won't come out much. Have you tank light on a timer, so he gets used to when it's "daylight" for its circadian rhythm, and have the light on for only say 5pm to midnight. Then normal daylight & dark the rest of the time. They should come out more when the lights on, if you do that stuff. Cheers.

      @@barugongameroff2914 Also try Portabello mushrooms, or the flat brown ones humans eat from the supermarket, that you can peel the skin off the top. They love them once they work out they're food. They give them the fungus that they normally get from rotting stuff we don't like in our tanks. All pleco love mushrooms, and unlike courgettes, they sit in the tank without clouding the water, cos just like rubber. Peel, rinse the mushroom's gills, and pin down through the stalk with a fork on a string, not a very sharp one mind. You can also give them prawn meat, sparingly, for a protein hit, but mushrooms have good protein too.

      @@Tight--LiNeZ that's so awesome man. thank you! will do as you told, very useful advise from you. mine is hiding all day in his wooden root but I am also too curious looking all the time after him. I got soft wood too in the tank. he is in a young cichlid tank at 28 deg C in 55gal, so far he seems relaxed when he comes out at darkness. ph is 7.5 but I'll lower it to 7.0 over time. will try mushroom also for feeding.

    I don't know what number it was but I once had a GN pleco in a 125 gallon African Cichlid tank because I didn't know any better. I saw what I thought was the coolest Pleco ever and even at $40 I had to have it. I did by luck have some nice size wood and rocks in the tank. So my Golden Nugget was a cute little fish maybe 3 -4 inches. I eventually sold the tank, with fish, equipment, the complete setup so I can't say how long that fish lived but it seemed happy and healthy while I had it.

    Hi, any idea at what size or age do they get rid of their yellows? Any idea at what size will they breed? Thanks.

    • @KGcichlids
      @KGcichlids  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      as far as I know they don't really get rid of there yellows, I've seen full size with a lot of yellow even though some does fade, as for breeding size I'm uncertain because I don't have experience in breeding or have seen them spawn, I do know that they need lots of small caves or a place to dig under.

    Which L-number are the ones shown?
    They really don't use L085 anymore, now that it is understood to be the same animal as L018.
    I'm really hoping to breed these guys, if you have any tips...?

    • @KGcichlids
      @KGcichlids  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      mine is an L018 others that vary are L85, L81 and L177, keep your ph around 6.4 to 7.6 plants and tannins help, feeding foods like repashy helps a ton and frequent water changes is a must. good luck :)

    • @FreshwaterIchthyology

      The Baryancistrus xanthellus 'L085' is understood to be the mature adult form of the Baryancistrus xanthellus 'L018' although adults of them all look really similar, they often loose their banding and the spots get very small, if you look at the original description it displays what is most likely Baryancistrus xanthellus 'L177'. Baryancistrus sp. 'L081' wasn't included in the original description for Baryancistrus xanthellus so it is unsure if that is a mistake or purposeful, so their often referred to as Baryancistrus cf. xanthellus 'L081' but Baryancistrus sp. is just as correct for the time being, maybe more so. The B. cf. xanthellus 'L081' is smaller, only growing to 18cm SL rather then 24cm SL and is much more of a challenge to get feeding and/or avoid malnutrition although this species is prone to malnutrition in most peoples aquariums due to their specialist aufwuch based diet.

    The temp is way off. These fish have been collected in temps as high as 90 degrees. They should be kept at least at 82. Mine are kept at 84/85. They need some protein but are primarily veggie eater, they have an extremely long digestive system. Mine love zucchini with protein foods supplemented. The L085 and LDA060 are adult versions of the L018

    All,these vids- not just you,don't mention that the adult fish lose ALL the yellow,and the spots stay the same size as the fish grows,with the black background also fading somewhat.
    If buyers hoped they would have a 10" yellow finned Pleco with big white spots? They won't.
    People need to look up these fish and find photos of adults...some like Luteus do stay yellow and why they sell for $1,000!

      @@KGcichlids no they are not !!! I have about 20 species of baryancistrus and scobinancistrus species and just about the only herbivore is the gold nugget and you feed them protein high diet or meaty foods they will last only 2 years and will eventually pass away so please stop now and give them algae tablets or foods and or courgette cucumbers apples watermelons potatoes are really good source of food for them you can add repashy foods too. trust me i have some bad experience in the past they may look they like the meaty food but you will regret in less than a year or 2
