    He’s singing in three different styles in the song. He’s singing as the demon, real guttural vocals. The super melodic cleans were directly from his mother’s journal. And he sings as a narrator and son. This in one of the most heartbreaking experiences I’ve heard as a song. The Valley itself is a tremendous album that Phil opened up his world for us to explore via the music.

    A quote:
    "Their latest album, "The Valley" is a reference to the part of Hardin Valley (west of Knoxville, Tennessee) where vocalist Phil Bozeman grew up. Set against this backdrop, he approaches his subject matter unflinchingly, building upon everything that came before, making it clear that he has survived that which he was forced to endure and is not afraid to confront it. “Phil has been upfront in his lyrics in the past about hardships he endured in his life as a child, and I believe with this record we tried to paint a better picture of that,” says guitarist Alex Wade, who alongside his bandmates, stands 100% behind everything their vocalist has to say. “I feel our music is Phil’s release from his past, being able to get it out and speak about it, and hopefully anyone who hears it that may have gone through similar experiences can find some release in it as well.”

  • @amandiepannell786

    No one really knows the demons some people fight everyday..

  • @robertgriffith3139
    @robertgriffith3139 3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    “Basically, Phil [Bozeman, vocalist]’s mom would see a demon outside or by her fireside, and she knew that if she saw it there, then it would be by her bedside that night,” says Ben. “She would write these journals which were pretty cryptic - her handwriting would change every now and again. The song title actually came from one of the journals. It talked about the Devil raping a witch. So we interpreted it, and changed it to give it a better flow. We didn’t want the word ‘raping’ in the song title, so we changed the title, and gave Mathis this vision, and he did his own thing with it.” Apparently, and i could be wrong, Phil's mother was a schizophrenic with 36 or so different personalities.

  • @lepi44871
    @lepi44871 3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    The song is about the singers mother. She suffered from schizophrenia and claimed to be tormented by demons. This song is about one in particular. She wrote journals and some of the lyrics are direct quotes of some of her entries.

    So glad you finally did another Whitechapel reaction. Idk if anyone before me done this but here's some context, the album this is off of is about the singer Phil's life and this song is about his mother. She suffered from mental disorders after losing his dad and believed that demons were visiting her in her bed (represented by the old man and the lyrics "the demon stands by the fireside, but tonight they'll migrate to my bedside") also he used certain scripts from her actual journal in the lyrics such as "burn the bed, burn everything, its all a lie anyway". The album as a whole is very gut wrenching, especially knowing the real history behind it

    Reaction vids are always cool but the fact that u actually investigated the meaning behind the song at the end.. u earned a sub

    One thing that sets your channel apart is also going through the meaning of the song. A lot of other reaction videos are just the people going on about how cool the song is. I probs don't have to tell you this, but keep going at it

    I hadn’t realized that Alex hadn’t listened to this. This is one of my favorite songs of all time and I’m so glad he listened to it. It was the first song that got me into metal heavier than thrash

    As others have pointed out below, this entire album (The Valley) is just so awesome. Kerrang has a REALLY great article about the entire album. Phil really opened up with his lyrics, and is just amazing.

    If you like the drumming, then you need to check out David Diepold. He is actually drummer of Obscura. On his channel he is/was covering bands like Nile, Belphegor, Cognizance, Cattle Decapitation and some more. Of course he did Whitechapel too. I think you'll like it.

    Phil boozman made this album about his childhood and his mother battling with split personality disorder true work of art.

So we interpreted it, and changed it to give it a better flow"

    Hey Alex, check out 'Orphan' and 'bloodsoaked symphony' by Whitechapel. 🔥 Phil's clean vocals are amazing - not only his gutturals.

    I've known a person with depression/multiple personality disorder. It's not easy to watch or hear. All I wanted for that person was for them to get some help, but they refused. It's so sad. 😞😞😞
