This week we're continuing work on the 2002 3rd Gen 4Runner with lower ball joint replacement. 3rd Gen 4Runner lower ball joints are one of the few achilles heels of these vehicles and should be checked and replaced about every 100K miles. This repair is the same for Toyota Tacoma as well.

Thanks for the 4Runner playlist, Speedy! I inherited a '98 3rd Gen (236K) about a year ago and was looking to do practically everything you have done to yours... just so I know where I am at with its maintenance. I appreciate your knowledge, time, and experience - along with documenting for the rest of us. Great stuff :)
Another fantastic one! Thank you Speedy! You’re saving my family money and giving me wrenching confidence!
When checking for play, place the pry bar between the LCA and the LBJ.
Good idea going OEM with LBJ's and bolts. I did mine 5 years ago @235K on my 2000 T4R, 275K on it now and with just basic maintenance, these trucks will run for ever. To 300K and beyond!
I love how you explain things and make me confident in tackling jobs myself.
Any chance you’ll be doing anything with the charcoal canister? Replacing hoses maybe, giving an explanation as to what goes where and why? Mine is all jacked from the previous owner as part of the filler neck was rusted out. (2001 here - only the ‘01-‘02 have it in this spot).
The pink milkshake. Happened to me had to flush my transmission with about 5 gallons of trans fluid using a small pump. Changed trans filter and out on an external cooler. Not taking anymore chances cooling the trans through the radiator
Cool! Speedy's doin' a repair/how-to vid on the 'Yoder.
More to come!
Just had mine done on my 00 Tacoma this last summer! Radiator and tstat is next and its set for the next little bit.
Just did my radiator and Tstat last wknd.
Love the way you switch things up.😊
Thank you! 😊
Great looking 4Runner!
Just swapped my original LBJs after 240k miles. Thanks for this video!
Glad it helped!
454,000 miles on my 4runner. Already had a failed ball joint- repaired myself.
Wow! These things tend to last forever with a little TLC here and there. LBJs are super easy and a no brainer for 100K (ish) maintenance.
Great video thankyou
Not a speck of rust or corrosion. Must be nice.
thanks for this video it helped me alot when i did mine as for the ball joint when i felt the new one it didnt have any play at all it was realy stiff unlike yours you new one had to much play but i think mines was after market
FYI "most" people recommend OEM only for the lower ball joints due to the risks if it breaks.
I have a 2002 4Runner. It has the death wobble around 65. Really need to get this done before it explodes.
It's pretty easy.
Do you have a link and the info. on those nerf bars? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for a great video Speedy. Does the Sport Runner have improved steering and/or road feel after replacing the LBJ's?
My original LBJs weren't in terrible shape so I didn't really notice any difference with the new ones.
Brother... Excelent video.. one question please.. I have VZJ95.. (Prado 2005, Engine 5VZFE) and I want change this ball joint for brand MOOG... Is recomendable advisable to install a grease fitting?
Thousand thanks in advantage...
Use Toyota ONLY.
