Great for SNES, not great for N64 unless RGB modded, you are better getting a retro tink 2x and use S-video cable for an unmodded system. Great for PAL gamecube as well.
I have a RAD2X and it is a very good device. Because it works on all Nintendo systems with a multiout port it really a no brainer. I have also modded an original Famicom with an av composite mod and multiout port and it works great!
For $75 Voultar will provide and install his own rgb board. If you're willing to pay more you could also get the Tim Worthington board with Deblur if you like the option of removing some of the baked in anti aliasing but you'd need to find an installer.
I already placed my pre-orders for the Rad2x cables I needed for the two different consoles I still use - a little over $120 USD when you factor in S&H plus a currency conversion fee to GBP. I intend to use these as secondary cables, though, since my at-home setup will use HD Retrovision cables and I won’t have to unplug those. I’d much like to see versions of these for the PStwo/PS3 (i.e. taps into the YPbPr signal instead of the RGB that Pound uses) and possibly also the Wii - at least one of the Wii consoles I own is of the mobo revision that’s incompatible with the WiiDual mod :(
The best use for the RAD2X seems to be the Super Nintendo, as the RGB signal from the Super Nintendo is just MUCH better than the composite signal or even the S-video signal. However, the RAD2X is also a great option for use with any RGB modded system, or with the PAL versions of the Gamecube which have RGB output as a stock feature. Personally, I have an RGB modded N64 that I use the RAD2X with, and it's great. However, at least on my TV, I have found that even the much cheaper Hyperkin HDMI adapter looks surprisingly good, and I don't notice any significant difference in input latency, though I do believe there is some additional input latency with the Hyperkin adapter. The only reason I have both is because my friend gave me an RGB modded N64 with the RAD2X adapter shortly after I had bought the Hyperkin HDMI cable. I do also wonder about quality control and longevity with the Hyperkin cable, as I have seen some people complaining about sound issues with them, and other people complaining about them failing completely. I don't really expect an adapter with no moving parts to be prone to failure, and if the sound doesn't work right, you should absolutely return it before the end of the money back return window.
One thing that is not clearly stated on Mike Chi's website is that's not compatible with all PAL standards, for example, I live in Argentina and our standard is not PAL-B as in most EU countries, but PAL-N which is more or less PAL over an NTSC carrier frequency, and all Retrothink's products fail to detect this so all you get is a B/W picture. I imagine is the same for most non-PAL-B countries, this won't matter for most of your audience but maybe this can save some money to someone.
I’ve been interested in these ever since I heard about them months ago. Definitely look better than the pound cables and their clones. Impressive. My only gripe is paying to import them but that’s a small issue in the scheme of things. Also I saw someone review the Saturn version and when they flipped the switch the colors on screen would change. I noticed the color palettes being different here but only going from composite to rad2x which is kind of expected.

I'm trying to decide between this and the Eon Super64. How do the picture quality and the smoothing options compare between the two? My console is not RGB modded.
With the eon super 64 youll get svideo. With the rad2x the best youll get it composite unless your system is rgb modded. My honest recommendation is to get a cheap rgb mod plus the rad2x. That way you can get rgb out, which the eon super 64 cant do. Itll look the best and after its all said and done theyll end up being around the same cost anyway. Super 64 = 150. I am getting really excited for these cables. I'm at a point in my collection where I'm ready to upgrade to more than the bare minimum composite/S-video, but I'm really hesitant about dropping a ton of money on an image processor like the OSSC and quality SCART cables only to turn my setup into a rat's nest. These cables look like they do 99% of the job that an OSSC/SCART setup would do, but at a much lower cost and much greater convenience. I can feed so many consoles through HDMI straight to my TV and still have them look great. And none of them are tied down to an external image processor device - I can pair the cables with each device and take them with me really easily without having to worry about anything else. Really, the only drawback looks like the lack of optional scanline generation like the OSSC can do, but those aren't really my cup of tea anyway. I'm probably going to end up getting 4 sets for my SNES, N64, Genesis, and PS2. This is going to motivate me to get my N64 RGB mod done too, lol.
@Madlittlepixel I don't see it in any of your links, what mini - regular hdmi cord you use/recommend. Can you add a preferred one to your links or your amazon page? Thanks
A hdmi converter I bought only really works well with the wii,it does allright on Nintendo 64 the ps2 hdmi conversion is pretty bad but other than that it works with almost any rgb old system, its called the old school hdmi converter
I bought it pre modded from oldskoolconsoles in uk but you can check the (etim dot net dot au) and go down to distributors and installation services closest for your country in left menu.
Can you use the Genesis RAD2X cable on a Modded NES with the circular shaped RGB port? Would rather like to only need one cable. Already have a Super NT for the SNES stuff.
Demand is high and when batches come in they sell out quickly. It'll be like this for awhile and the corona virus really isn't helping. Your best bet is following them on twitter and keeping up with when they restock or put up preorders.
I'm hoping Analogue would make an FPGA N64 soon, using these cables are nice and they make your old system work to new sparkles on modern TV but no cables or mod would ever get the N64 visuals to wow standard unless it's through FPGA.
These are way better than any of the cheap hdmi adapters you find on Amazon etc. These are essentially a retrotink2x for the specific system. So it takes the rgb signal and line doubles it. Whereas a lot of the cheap adapters takes composite and converts it to digital. These look nicer and add no latency, many of the other options add latency.
@@TheSamShow20 ive tried them all, and the only difference is the contrast, saturation etc.. they are built on the same tech, so it may be a thing of preference with how they look.. but typically they are all doing the same thing. If the cheaper levelhike is fine for you, thats cool. Those are more readily available and cheaper than the RAD2X, but for me after using Levelhike and all other brands.. i wouldnt go back.
@@TheSamShow20 for RGB modded Nintendo consoles with the multi out highly recommend. You can go even crazier and do HD Retrovision component cables and a Tink5x, but then you are like around $400 lol, for me the RAD2X is good enough.
Functionally the rad2x is like a single purpose retrotink2x minus the svideo support. They both function and look identical. Get a rad2x if you only have a few systems. Get a retrotink2x if you have alot of systems as itll be far cheaper in the long run. The ossc will provide greater scaling options but requires a bit of tinkering to get the ideal profiles for each system. I'd wait for the ossc pro before making a purchase.
Im happy with the results as seen in the video, but comparing it to the OSSC and some quality component cables there is a lot more you can do and achieve. Upto 5x lines and scanlines if desired. You can definitely get a better picture with that combo than the rad2x.
@@Madlittlepixel Cool, thanks for your reply. I got my N64 hooked up to my OSSC , just wish it had a 'smoothing filter' Maybe I could connect my N64 RGB (borti's N64 advanced mod) with component to retrotink and then through the OSSC? Maybe that's just overkill haha. I can't be bothered with ultra hdmi.
Because that would require a mod that either doesnt currently exist or is no longer in production. You cant just plug video cables into a ds and get video out.
I don't have a Gamecube with a digital av output port, wouldn't this be a good solution for that? I never saw someone add a digital av output port directly to the hardware of the later Gamecube models.
@@TheAlphaOmegaX3 Like I said earlier, I don't have a digital av port. So I could only output composite and s-video. Why would I buy a product that only uses the digital av output port when I don't have one on my model. Unless you have a solution to solder a digital av output port or a HDMI port to the DOL-101 (no digital output), I have no reason to spend money on something I can't even use.
@@rxzero00 Oops! My bad man lol. I read your comment wrong. Your totally correct sir. I've been using my Wii as my Gamecube since I sold the GC component cables. That's how I've been making it work, but I know some still want the actual GC console to fire up.
Image wise no, the ossc is far more versatile. Though these cables are more so for convenience. They provide a simple 480p hdmi solution that doesnt introduce all the issues crappy upscalers do.
Not much honestly, especially if you want a good image. A retrotink2x helps though. Ensures you have a lag free solution with linedoubling and an optional smoothing filter.
Colors are not off, its just a different color palette. On my RGB NES I have a palette switch. I think it may have been set to garish. Which the yellows are more brighter, kinda orange tone.
Yeah I’ve already got the retrotink 2x, so I’ll stick with it 😉 I utilise svideo outputs on all the retro consoles which does a good job, far better than composite. The only exception is the NES, it’s not RGB modded 🥺 But still is a serviceable experience on the 2x. Before the 2x it’s was TERRIBLE. N64 is svideo through the 2x which is the only bad svideo performer, still respectable, but it’s N64..... it’s still blurry, but way better than composite. I have the Carby Insurrection adaptor for the gamecube which is brilliant!
Yeah it doesnt support svideo. I highly recommend rgb modding your n64. I actually bought the rgb modded n64 featured in this video lol. Looks really good
@@ians_parks what are you talking about. His adapters are completely trouble free. I've never had a problem and I haven't seen anything from other customers..

Havent looked into whether or not he's addressed this issue since then but honestly im not taking that risk myself. Insurrection Industries makes a quality gamecube hdmi adapter and its what i recommend to everyone else. Near 1 to 1 match with an oem metal shielded connector versus a cheap 3d printed plastic connector.
They are essentially the same thing except the super64 will appear slighltly sharper on unmodified consoles because it uses svideo. But the rad2x supports rgb if you eventually get your console modded. Both linedouble to 480p and both have a smoothing button.
Man do I need advice... just bought a Jr and plan on doing an rgb mod, what's the best way to go hdmi? Should I scart to tink2x or go with rad? Please help any advice would be greatly appreciated!
If you plan to use the tink2x for multiple devices than that may be the better deal. If just the SNES the RAD2X is great. No power or additional cables. I prefer the RAD2X due to convenience.
Using Tim Worthington RGB mod on N64 with my Rad2x I get a checker boarding effect on colors. Particularly Mario's hat. Any idea why on this? Thank you.
Me too! I have the same problem with mine, and have contacted RGC. They apparently are aware of this issue, but haven't offered a solution yet. You should contact them as well!
@@davefitzpatrick83 Hey Dave I couldn't figure out a workaround so I ended up severing the composite video line to the multi out. That cleared up my issue.
@@davefitzpatrick83 On the multi out board the pin (9) labeled "V" is composite video. I severed the trace going to it with an exacto blade. Keep in mind that doing this will render the N64 not capable of using composite video anymore.
@@chrismckye9213 Hey Chris! Rather than cut the trace, I temporarily cut pin 9 on the topside of the multi-out port. Can be quickly restored with a small jumper wire. When I restore pin 9 on the multi-out, the video comes back as it was..complete with checkerboard pattern on Mario's hat. :S
Yes you would need a modded front loader in order for it to be compatible. It needs to have the nintendo multiout connector that youd see on the av famicom, snes, n64, and gamecube. If you want to forgo modding you could look into getting the retrotink2x instead of the rad2x as youll be able to use your composite cables.

I use it with TW rgb with deblur and i can say..WOW! very crisp and good colors and if you have a mClassic it's even better.
@@OneMore1UP Who was your installer? I was looking into getting the TW RGB board with deblur as well
I too would like to know this. As UltraHDMI costs a small fortune now and preorders haven’t happened in almost a year I believe.
@@steadycamscottford Yeah Marshall is currently working on hardware revision 2. Thats why periodic preorder batches have stopped
I bought it pre modded from oldskoolconsoles in uk but you can check the (etim dot net dot au) and go down to distributors and installation services closest for your country in left menu.
Can you point me in the right direction to get my N64 RGB Modded??
Voultar is my recommended installer. For $75 he'll include his own rgb board and install it. Its the cheapest i can find he does quality work.
Does it work for my old Super Nintendo mini? Not to be confused with the Super Nintendo classic from a couple years ago.
Can you use the Genesis RAD2X cable on a Modded NES with the circular shaped RGB port? Would rather like to only need one cable. Already have a Super NT for the SNES stuff.
I can’t find this thing anywhere. Are they making any more?
Demand is high and when batches come in they sell out quickly. It'll be like this for awhile and the corona virus really isn't helping. Your best bet is following them on twitter and keeping up with when they restock or put up preorders.
Same here. I've suddenly got a lot more "ok" with my NES / SNES classic edition consoles. They just work...
I have a pal N64 and pal GameCube..
This is Soo worth it for me as I can RGB my N64 cheap and my GameCube already has RGB!!
I would love to have one of these adapters but they are not available in any of the stores, if you have any other link please pass it to me.
I'm hoping Analogue would make an FPGA N64 soon, using these cables are nice and they make your old system work to new sparkles on modern TV but no cables or mod would ever get the N64 visuals to wow standard unless it's through FPGA.
If they are gonna make one it definitely isnt coming anytime soon
but rgb is a huge step up from composite anyway so why are you comparing the cable being used for composite and for rgb?
Because one requires a mod and the other doesnt. Not everyone wants to mod their system
Would this be worth getting for a nes clone? I’m looking for a cleaner picture than retron hd and lag reduction
whats is the microcontroller on rad2x
Any Adapter for Wii?
It's called a Wii u
RGB needs a bit desaturation, the colors pop up a bit too much for my liking.
Will these work on my normal nintendo64 with no mods rgb?
How does this compare to level hike?
These are way better than any of the cheap hdmi adapters you find on Amazon etc. These are essentially a retrotink2x for the specific system. So it takes the rgb signal and line doubles it. Whereas a lot of the cheap adapters takes composite and converts it to digital. These look nicer and add no latency, many of the other options add latency.
@@Madlittlepixel I've tried a bunch of the cheap adapters. Level hike is quite a bit better then the rest.
@@Madlittlepixel I just bought an RGB NES... So I should probably get one
@@TheSamShow20 for RGB modded Nintendo consoles with the multi out highly recommend. You can go even crazier and do HD Retrovision component cables and a Tink5x, but then you are like around $400 lol, for me the RAD2X is good enough.
Also, it does not look so crisp as with a OSSC FM.
Its not meant to.
Awesome bro
Does this work for the SNES Jr. Can't Find a answer on the site
Is this better than OSSC or Retro Tink x2?
Functionally the rad2x is like a single purpose retrotink2x minus the svideo support. They both function and look identical. Get a rad2x if you only have a few systems. Get a retrotink2x if you have alot of systems as itll be far cheaper in the long run.
The ossc will provide greater scaling options but requires a bit of tinkering to get the ideal profiles for each system. I'd wait for the ossc pro before making a purchase.
How's this compared to an OSSC?
I'm confused, so a regular N64 console is a "composite" console?
unmodded the n64 only supports composite and s-video, but these cables won't use s-video. The same with NTSC gamecubes
Wait so it does not tap in in to N64 S-video signal ?
No. Only composite or rgb
How do I get these? They say unavailable
Why does this not exist for Nintendo Dsi or Nintendo DS Lite?
Because that would require a mod that either doesnt currently exist or is no longer in production. You cant just plug video cables into a ds and get video out.
I have a Nintendo 64 with s video cables the red yellow and white cables should I get this or the retro tink??
Retrotink2x allows you to use svideo cables. Rad2x is composite only unless you rgb mod your console so it can output as rgb.
I don't have a Gamecube with a digital av output port, wouldn't this be a good solution for that? I never saw someone add a digital av output port directly to the hardware of the later Gamecube models.
Sure but just know its defaulting to composite and not svideo. Its still a step up from using just composite cables directly with an hdtv tho
There are other products for little more that pull from digital port. Look up CARBY if your interested in using the digital port.
@@TheAlphaOmegaX3 He says he doesnt have a gamecube with the digital out though
Got one just before crimbo for my n64 👍🏻
Why doesn't it support s-video as input for N64 and Gamecube? That is a huge problem keeping using composite for them.
To keep the cost down
Its better than consoles rgb via OSSC??
Image wise no, the ossc is far more versatile. Though these cables are more so for convenience. They provide a simple 480p hdmi solution that doesnt introduce all the issues crappy upscalers do.
Ian Cowell thanks 🙏
I already own retrotink 2x and ossc. Will rad2x be a better option than HD retrovision?
If you are happy with that setup then id say no. Its going to be about equal to that quality depending on the console you are using the RAD2X on.
What is the best option for a non
rgb modded original nes? Thank you.
Not much honestly, especially if you want a good image. A retrotink2x helps though. Ensures you have a lag free solution with linedoubling and an optional smoothing filter.
Why do the colors look so off on the RGB NES?
Does the rad2x not support S-video? Just Composite and RGB? Using an unmodded N64 (though thinking about RGB modding it)
Yeah it doesnt support svideo. I highly recommend rgb modding your n64. I actually bought the rgb modded n64 featured in this video lol. Looks really good
I'll stick with my Zelda X pro adapter for my GameCube.😁
I pray your gamecube doesnt get fried. Might wanna steer clear of zelda x pro and upgrade to a carby adapter from insurrection industries.
@@ians_parks what are you talking about. His adapters are completely trouble free. I've never had a problem and I haven't seen anything from other customers..
@@LTJohn His adapter has been reported to have shorted out the other pins either by having the console or the adapter itself moved or yanked around, essentially frying your gamecube in process. Havent looked into whether or not he's addressed this issue since then but honestly im not taking that risk myself. Insurrection Industries makes a quality gamecube hdmi adapter and its what i recommend to everyone else. Near 1 to 1 match with an oem metal shielded connector versus a cheap 3d printed plastic connector.
does it work with wii
Can you use this on an unmodded N64 with the super 64 (which I have) to enhance the visuals and clarity further on HDTVs?
With an unmodded n64? Yes.
In tandem with a super64? No.
They are essentially the same thing except the super64 will appear slighltly sharper on unmodified consoles because it uses svideo. But the rad2x supports rgb if you eventually get your console modded. Both linedouble to 480p and both have a smoothing button.
Ian Cowell Thank you!
There is a retro tink scart edition... I might go for that especially if you wanted to do some other consoles that supported it like the genesis.
@@chrismckye9213 Hey Chris! I have the basic RGB bypass kit, not the TW kit, and a CPU-04 N64. How did you sever it from the mod?
@@davefitzpatrick83 On the multi out board the pin (9) labeled "V" is composite video. I severed the trace going to it with an exacto blade. Keep in mind that doing this will render the N64 not capable of using composite video anymore.
@@chrismckye9213 Hey Chris! Rather than cut the trace, I temporarily cut pin 9 on the topside of the multi-out port. Can be quickly restored with a small jumper wire.
When I remove pin 9, I lose all video. The Rad2X is still getting RGB signal (lit up purple), but no video output at all from the N64 (just color bars from the 2X). When I restore pin 9 on the multi-out, the video comes back as it was..complete with checkerboard pattern on Mario's hat. :S
Nintendo 64 without mod?
Great Video
Does it work on ps2?
Will it work with Wii?
No. The wii doesn't use the multiout connector you'd find on the av famicom, snes, n64, and gamecube.
Its possible with rad2x fullscreen???
You could just stretch to 16:9 on your tv if you prefer fullscreen. 4:3 should always be the default with these devices.
Do you need a modded NES front loader for it to work on it? I didn't understand how you can get hdmi from the NES front loader, can somebody explain?
Yes you would need a modded front loader in order for it to be compatible. It needs to have the nintendo multiout connector that youd see on the av famicom, snes, n64, and gamecube. If you want to forgo modding you could look into getting the retrotink2x instead of the rad2x as youll be able to use your composite cables.
