@@dream6562 yes and no (especially with Zack Snyder). It’s an oversimplification to say superheroes have become dark and edgy. With Batman and Daredevil, I agree; but with someone like Superman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, etc., especially in the Snyder Cut of JL, we explore what makes them tick, what REAL human issues they’re dealing with…
For example, Arthur Curry is born from a forbidden relationship, Atlantis and humanity. Neither world accepts him (especially Atlantis - a racist brutal race). Hell I’m born from a white father and Japanese mother, and I can relate (especially being born from Tokyo but will forever be know to the Japanese as a “gaijin”, an outsider). So of course he’s gonna be a drifter without a purpose who only cares at the bare minimum.
I certainly do not mind the “realistic” elements of superheroes because we are all going through our own issues. Our heroes do too. When I see a “dark edgy” interpretation I try to see past what some call edgy and try to see the humanizing elements of our heroes.
(However I will agree to an extent, ie; HBO Max’s Titans series; it’s a drastic imbalance from the colorful yet mature Titans I remember from the cartoon and the comics)

@@dream6562 but what fundamentally makes a character rootable is their humanity, their inherent flaws. In MOS Clark barely started off as Superman and was barely getting the hang of saving as many people as he can and defeating the Kryptonians. In BVS, he’s better adept at saving people, but he’s still haunted by his failures and the consequences from MOS. He was still living with the idea that he’s not gonna be able to save NOR satisfy everyone’s expectations of him. By ZSJL, after his resurrection, he’s better balanced and synthesizing both his human and Kryptonian sides (hell when he dons the black suit, it’s similar to how Luke donned all black after learning from failure, becoming wiser and not so naive, and becoming more confident and powerful)
      But that’s just me [shrugs]

Superman is meant to inspire people to be the best they can be, and to show that no matter where you come from you can be a good person. I think the most ideal criticism of Superman can be summarized by a quote from the Green Goblin.

“Dreams save us. Lift us up and transform us. And on my soul…I swear until my dreams of a world where dignity, honor, and justice becomes the reality we all share, I’ll never stop fighting. Ever” - Superman
In society, people seem to reject upon those who value altruism, seeming them as naïve, but I always perceived it with as a way to shape and build a positive community, welcoming those who would help and need help from other people. That was the whole point of Lex Luthor as Superman's villain, as someone once stated, "We're all becoming Lex Luthors", representing upon people embracing upon their assumptions that the world and everyone living are equally ugly and worthless scumbags; that it’s all about who gains and who doesn’t; and let our own ego go wild as such. To idealize upon that people can always be able to pass on hope onto to others which a small act of kindness is all it takes to do it, and that's literally how the Kents' raised a literal alien to be who he is; more human that anyone can ever be.

Oh stfu, I have read All-Star, For All Seasons, Byrne's run, Geoff's run and many more issues here and there, Superman is really not that complex or interesting of a character. He works as a simple archetype I guess? But as a character, he's EXTREMELY simple and not in a good way, from a character conflict standpoint he's like a 6/10.
Like I think The Doctor is pretty much Superman, but done right. Everything good you can say about Superman, you can say about the Doctor, but the difference is that the Doctor actually has a character flaw which is actually relevant to the story.

Superman got lucky cause all the bible thumpers chose him as the "safe" comic. Superman is a fraud, DC sued captain marvel, did everything it could to dominate the competition. Heck they even did a Popeye parody after the publisher of Popeye said they didn't want to just to make superman the winner. It's a slap in the face when they "hint" that Popeye has a drug problem.

(Granted this was DCeased when Jon was Superman but..) When Superman told Constantine he was a good man right before Constantine saved the world and Constantine said something like "I don't think that's true but it means a lot hearing that from Superman", that's so powerful. Ultimately, Superman is pure positivity, and hope. He is the personalization of the indomitable human spirit. That even in the face of all inevitable doom, you stare back and say, "But I'm going to try anyway." When the rest of the world is full of cynics and pessimists, or even if it's your own internal thoughts and demons, who constantly plague your mind with the question, "What if you fail?", Superman represents the rebuttal to that questions: "But what if I succeed?"

Current people think that Superman is boring because they think he does not struggle and is not relatable and there is no drama and hardships...
What is funny is the irony, that Superman was made by the very people who were going through real drama, life struggles and where in development and these people who were struggling were, or at least trying to relate to Superman.

This is a great video that shows an understanding of Superman and how he really isn't boring. Superman is the greatest superhero of all time, not because of his powers, but how he chooses to use them to help people because he cares. His greatest strength is his humanity which he learned from being raised on Earth by 2 loving parents. This shows that Superman's humanity and compassion comes from humanity itself. We will never have the powers of Superman, but we have the same capacity for good that Superman does and Superman does inspire us to act on our good nature. Doomsday Clock is another great example of what makes Superman great. Dr. Manhatten A man turned into a god disassociated with humanity regains it with his encounter with a God raised to be man. True poetry. Dr. Manhattan with all his power his ability to just vaporize Clark, he can’t destroy his ideals or inspiration of hope so he vanishes and scarifies himself to give his world a Clark. Even Lex understands this at the end of The Last Knight and gives the world a new Superman after sacrificing himself.

I think he was made great for his time period when he was made in the 1940’s I believe, but times have changed. People can relate to working hard and grinding to be on top, dbz, one piece, my hero academia, naruto, especially Batman the only reason dc is relevant to me is because of Batman!!!! Amazing shows like this can last 20, 30, 40 years plus because of the incredible storylines and character developments that happens, Superman doesn’t, and haven’t changed a lot and in my opinion over the years that’s why he’s stuck in the mud. people often compare him to Captain America, but personally i always saw him as DC's own Spiderman, two kids who were living normal lives until they suddenly became upon a power like no other, who used their surrogate parents' teachings as his life philosophy, protecting everyone who can't protect themselves against everything not because they have to, but because they can, they love this place and everyone who lives here, so they'll give their everything to preserve what they love
Superman isn't a Super that hides as a man, he's a man who just so happens to be Super

I've been learning a lot about Superman lately, and I've figured out that in a good Superman story, he may be a Kryptonian, but he's still human. IMO Superman can be a really great character, but alot of writers don't know how to write that, and instead of focusing on him and him as a person, they focus on his power and nothing else. In a good Superman story, he's strong, but kind. Powerful, but gentle. I'm not even a fan, and even I know that.

People who call superman "boring" have never actually consumed a superman story outside of the man of steel movie. Superman's literal biggest enemy is Lex Luthor a normal human with simply high intelligent and wealth. And the reason why despite all the powerful creatures superman has battled like lobo or Darkseid, lex is his arch-nemsis is because of the thematic contrast between the two. Superman represents a symbol of hope, justice and ultimate power while Lex represents corruption, corporate synergy and injustice. Superman uses his powers for good by virtue of his morally right upbringing while Lex is obsessed with superman's power creating machinery to replicate and compete only furthering his corruption and descendant into madness. Lex is the president in some stories which holds good faith for the people while Superman is the hero of justice also holding faith and hope for the people and when the two sides clash, in a good superman story it is a thematic clash not just a physical one. Despite Superman being an Alien he always showed great humility while Lex depsite being human acts above everyone and almost un-human like how he looks down on everyone even at times competing with superman physically(mainly due to kryptonite)
This is only one aspect of superman its not even taking into account his personal life as Clark and balancing superman or his dichotomy between other Justice League members especially his complex contrast with Batman or even his homeworld's lore and history such as supergirl.

People love Homelander for the following reasons: He's an "evil" version of Superman. But let's break it down on what makes him this version of Superman.
    - With all the power in the world, he does virtually what he wants with little to no remorse.
    - He's narcissistic.
    - He lacks a support system/love which resulted in a lack of morals an insecurity.
    - Despite his status, he's never TRIED to truly put his powers to the test.
    - He does a shitty job holding back his powers and lashes out whenever he wants.
    - instead of showing ingenuity when he meets his match, he tried to hide it and is afraid of not being top dog.
    - he's a force that puts protagonist in high risk situations.
With all this said, people should realize that Superman is a DEEP character because of the points above.
    - Superman with all his godlike powers, is humanities greatest defenders because of a simple, normal family in a farm teach him right from wrong, love and support and making him not ashamed of what he is. Nuture being such a powerful thing.
    - He has all the power in the world, but him being in danger is not the focus, his goal to save someone is the focus.
    - Because he wants to save someone? He has to limit his powers to not break someone or something. (World Made of Cardboard)
    - he loves among humans, as a normal guy. A bumbling clumsy guy at that. And people take advantage of someone like that. That tests Superman. Because he's seeing some potential ugliness in the people he tries to save when he could sqaush them like a fucking bug. Huge restraint.
    - When Superman bleeds against a foe, now you have his to consider. And if he goes? Alot more souls will follow but he will still press forward.
Superman ain't boring. People's perceptions of Superman in modern day? Are boring.

I think the reason Superman gets a bad rep as a character is because its hard to imagine someone as powerful as him being as virtuous, which tells more about our society than Superman as a character. The decline of his popularity reflects the grimmer view we have on society compared to earlier days.
As much as I don't like Iron Man as a character, I think part of his appeal is that he starts out as a rich jerk with power. So following his journey of becoming a better person feels relatively more real.

One of the biggest things done wrong in 2013’s Man of Steel (in my opinion of course) is how Pa Kent died; Clark could have easily saved him and others without tipping anyone off about his powers. It would have been much more powerful and made more sense for him to have died in a way that Clark couldn’t have helped, like a heart attack as in the 1978 movie. It would have driven home that he can’t save everyone.

In a world that seems to get more and more chaotic, depressing, and nihilistic, we need a character like superman more than ever. Theres a good reason he's the prototype superhero, there's a good reason that big S on his chest is so iconic. The true superman exists to show us and to prove to us that we as individuals and as a society are capable of more and can always strive to be better. Superman shows us what it truly means to be a hero. It isn't about just punching bad guys really hard, or looking cool. Being a hero is really about inspiring others, standing up for whats right and for what you believe in, being a hero means to uplift others and to save people sometimes even from themselves. Superman taught me all of that, and I hope more people start to truly appreciate why we need a symbol of hope like him

Superman is the absolute good in all of us, yet he just like anyone will face issues where he will be defeated every day by others who disagree with him and may even as others do today write him off as a boring good boy with nothing of substance.
The truth is that Superman's greatness has never come from his powers, his greatness comes from being human in spite of his powers and in spite of others finding him to not be "Superman"
It's kinda like saying why the world is still screwed up when Superman could fix it all, when the truth is that no one can fix that as to do so would be beyond human, issues do not come from the world, they come from people and people no matter how amazing will always have flaws, and Superman is just like any other person in this regard and yet he still chooses to see a world where we can be better and we can fix these issues.
We just have to know that even when fixed those issues will still arise and it's important to stay strong and find reason within ourselves, find Superman in us.

Superman was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. They happened to be Jewish and the character premiered in the 1930s when a certain someone in Germany was rising in power. I doubt that that was a coincidence.

People forget, she is Spider-Man, but she’s also just a KID. She’s LEARNING, growing up, as all kids must. She’s finally learned what Spider-Man TRULY is, what the suit MEANS. I will forever quote Pete in the Edge of Time game, “What’s important is NOT standing by and allowing someone to suffer or DIE because you do NOTHING! If you don’t get that, then you don’t get the first thing about being Spider-Man.” Fittingly enough, it’s Miguel that Pete says that to, teaching him that Spider-Man is about doing the RIGHT thing in the face of fear rather than standing by and watching others suffer because of it.

    Loved the essay!
Homelander in the Boys series is the dark version of superman which makes me value the influence of superman`s father Jonathan Kent (especially as portrayed in the Superman: Man of Steel) in preparing him to develop a philosophy or paradigm to synthesize and cope with the pressure and responsibilities that come with such power.
Homelander did not have such a figure in his life and we can all see the effects.

Saying homelander is the dark/ evil version of superman is the most surface level thinking I've ever seen there's a reason many are regarding him as one of the best villains in tv history and its not because he's "dark superman" that's an insult to the writing of the character because he's quite more than that

I'm tired of the hipsters that are like "SuPerMaN iS bOriNg CuZ hE HaS nO FLaWs". Like, #1 yeah he does have flaws, don't over-simplify him, and #2 if you actually look into Superman's struggles and what he puts up with he is far from boring. Superman is a classic hero archetype, don't pretend like these new-age superheroes or rewritten characters are better. Maybe people should reflect more on Superman's stories to figure out why he became such a popular character in the first place.

Anyone who thinks Superman is boring is a basic fan. He is everything a hero SHOULD represent. Every thing a hero should strive to be. He may not be as “cool” as certain heroes, but in terms of pure heroism, he is the standard. Strong, compassionate, faithful, resilient, and humble.

  • @thalmoragent9344
    @thalmoragent9344 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Superman isn't boring per say, hell, he's got a simple but super cool premise. It's just that so many authors or directors end up reiterating and making his character... I dunno, predictable? Overly simplistic? A simple, easy to follow and understand hero is totally fine, and hell, sometimes it's refreshing just to have a regular, average story for a superhero, truly.
I dunno, I guess what I'm trying to say is; maybe it's just that they gotta hit all the aspects of the guy well enough tbh. Cause if not, it's like "oh, Superman ALONE is about to throw hands and its gonna be a wash" at this point, what's the point of the Justice League surrounding him?

Superman is the greatest superhero When Written right. Clark is a very important character and very easy to do badly unlike Batman. You ask everybody what is Batman you will get a different answer because everybody has a different interpretation of Batman. With Superman most people have the same answer. Truth and Justice, the big blue boy scout. A man with amazing powers who uses those powers to save a cat out of a tree. Using his worlds to stop threats

People that say Superman is boring are very evious, they think that people put him above all others. They feel that a God powerful being would drive attention away from them and therefore they envy him.
In order to love Superman we must be humble, we must be like him and not only him, but like every good person we know.
It's funny, Superman is the most powerful human and still, he is the most humble one, he just wants a simple and happy life, nothing more.
I love Superman and i am not ashamed to say it, i've cried so many times reading his stories and i am proud to say it.
