Because of that trimming it appears you need to do a bit more subtitling. As it skips a single text block. The missing text block should be, and I am doing this to make it easier for you and because I am bored: "the challenge. It was way too much of a grind. And I just carried on my merry way." Also, since I am now paying more attention to it, the next subtitle block after the skipped one is missing a But. I assume that is because it was in the missing subtitle block but it feels weird to just have the first word of a sentance be in a different block.
Uhh, anyway, have a nice day. I did a bit of rambling because it is…apparently 3:11AM.

Funny thing is I did do something like this, but at a much lesser scale. On Kephallonia I decided to venture a bit ahead of where the game was expecting me to go, and I ended up fighting an overleveled wolf with the funky "GO BACK THIS IS TOO MUCH FOR YOU" skull, thinking I'd get enough xp for killing it. I didn't, so I didn't even bother trying that again (not like I could, with so much stuff to do anyways), but it's funny how I still remember that damn wolf at the beginning of the game all these years later.

This is what makes Bethesda games so good to me. They're pretty shallow if you play them as intended generally, but they're so free in their system design, that you can come up with all sorts of self-imposed challenges that add a lot more flavor to this story and to the gameplay. Starfield was one of my favorite games because I completely ignored the core gameplay, and built a massive janky Outpost Network, then role-played the rest of the game as if I was a out of touch billionaire spending my riches on pretending to be the hero of the universe.

I have such a love-hate relationship with any Bethesda title. Because more often than not I enjoy the worlds that Bethesda builds and often it's really easy to try to put yourself into the world.... But man I can't stand the way they do mostly everything else.

And really I think most people would agree with you and it's honestly something Bethesda should be embracing with Elder scrolls 6. Just take a page of Breath of the wild and have a main quest that could take like 3 hours to beat just to give the game a sense of focus. And of course there should be side quests, dungeons and landmarks to explore, towns to visit and people to talk to. But Bethesda should've has gone even further with the freedom their games are designed that one player could have a vastly different experience with the game then other players. Almost like you are playing a tabletop rpg but you have read the players manual thoroughly

People will hate me for saying this but I enjoyed Starfield way more than Baldurs Gate 3. And I say that as someone that played the first 2 baldurs gate games. @@joey199412 yeah, games are so much more about the experience you have with them than the actual quality or content of them. Obviously well made games are more likely to give you a good experience, there's still a lot of room for "bad" games to become a special experience due to the way you approach them, just like Phillip was saying about AC Odyssey.

    • @Verchiel_
      @Verchiel_ 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

BGS games (skyrim in particular, as it's my favorite game ever) are quite hard to form an opinion because.
Factually you can easily acknowledge that almost every aspect of them is flawed, and that every bit could be improved. Bugs could be fixed, graphics could be optimized, balancing could be a thing, entire mechanics refined.
But also in the end once you're 150 hours into a playthrough technically doing the same "do this questline, do these side quests, but with a dagger instead of a sword this time", you're still having fun.
For all the issues and the flaws, they're still loads of fun on your 10th or 20th playthrough, because of the sheer replayability of them. And of course the immense modding community only rivaled by minecraft.

I have created a similar experience with Metro 2033, where I've never played the game before, but set the game to a language I do not speak nor read: Russian
Why? Because that's how I've learned English! You play a game whose language you do not speak, just click around and try to remember the combination of symbols that leads to playing the game.
Anyway, this has lead to a unique experience where I had to try and read the people's voice, intonation and body language to guess what was going to happen next. I only got stuck on that one missing with the old man in the sewers where a never-ending stream of monsters emptied my bullet-bags multiple times, until I looked up a video on TH-cam on what to do - turned out I needed to blow up a hole to stop the stream of monsters. Multiple hours into the game and my Russian was not up to par quite yet.
All because Jaime from Mythbusters could read the Cyrrilic on a Russian rifle to identify it as such, and I wanted to have the same ability.

    • @NostraDavid2
      @NostraDavid2 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

As a bonus I can now decipher Cyrillic as well, because between missions Artyom read out this text on screen, so I just mapped his pronunciation to our Latin script and now I can do the revers and at least recognize English loan words that are written in Cyrrilic. Looking at you Half Life 2, with your buildings that have Cyrillic words on them.

This is the sort of dynamics that really make video games shine over other media. If I picture a piece of content as an impression molding experiences, a video, tv show or book will have a similar looking shape, albiet with some impressionist transform, for most people. A game on the other hand will literally have two different shapes. Outer Wilds is a great example of this, I've talked to people whos experiences were completely opposed to mine, but we still have shared nuggets. Great stuff

I can not share that feeling but I respect it. What puts me off is that these games tell me where to go and where to not go, I dislike that. Sure, you can create your own challenge, you can test your limits, but it doesn't feel natural to me. The state of mind part is definitely mandatory for this, otherwise there would be no satisfaction in trying such things.
Some games manage to give me exactly this feeling, but without displaying any levels or a putting a skull icon above the enemy's healthbar and whatnot.
Make a game feel natural and I'm all for it. Give me a sense of danger by designing the enemy in a way that makes me respect what challenge may be coming up when I decide to take the fight.
I totally understand the appeal to challenge yourself and remember parts of the game you specifically picked to do so, but it feeling natural contributes to a good time for me and many devs overlook this part.

The Gothic series (and Risen 1), which are loved in parts of Europe and Russia, are prime examples for this exact power fantasy. You get stronger and you feel every bit of progress, including changing weapon damage and movesets, nice armor you have to actually work for and areas that feel more hostile the further you get into the game.

I have two similar, although entirely different, stories to share when it comes to AC Odyssey:
First, Uplay offers you to play the prologue on the starter island before the game is fully downloaded. My internet at the time was so slow that I had played through said prologue faster than the rest of the game could download, so what did I do in my boredom and refusal to stop playing? I paddled out to the open sea with these small boats as much as the game would let me. And then I tried to position myself - often swimming by now because the boat had long broken - in a way to catch on bycoming pirate ships that were just inside the restricted area. What followed was often my quick death, but sometimes I managed to kill the entire crew, basically claiming the vassel for myself.
The second story is about one of those cultists. I wanted the armor set that particular branch brings, but the guy was way overlevelled. So I went there, snuck around the docks he was staying at, and kept peppering him and his guards with arrows for probably half an hour. Very nerve wrecking, I often died. Main strategy ended being spartan kicking them off high surfaces because fall damage is not tied to the damage you do at any given level. Pretty sure I still failed.

This reminds me of my childhood game, Asterix & Obelix XXL. Not knowing English, I was oblivious to a lot of the hints and game mechanics, but still brute forced my way through and nearly finished the game. I got stuck in one of the levels of the final area, and even looking up tutorials didn't help me as I still didn't really understand anything.
The game has a "combo" mechanic where you can perform special attacks after filling your combo meter. But you have to do specific button combinations to perform these, and you also have to have unlocked the power beforehand. I went through the whole game designed around this mechanic without ever using a single combo attack.
The part I got stuck at had you fight 100 enemies at once, assuming you're just gonna do one of the big flashy moves to take down tons of them simultaneously. I tried for hours fighting them all one by one, and I kid you not, one time I died once there was just 1 enemy remaining. I tried different parkour moves to jump over the barriers and skip the fight as well, to no avail.
The later levels in the game have even more enemies, so I was just going to get stuck again even if I somehow got past that part, but it's still a cool memory to hold on to.

I must agree with this "view" on playing games, honestly how couldn't I when I play Runescape since god damn 2006-2007 to this god damn very day.
Sure there's been pauses and for the past 5 years I've been more off than on, but still it's that game which will never stop surprising me and creating challenges for yourself is what this game's been about... well almost forever for me.
Getting Firecape was my goal at first back in 2006, absolutely underleveled, undergeared yet I tried over and over and over again.
After millions of tries I finally got it and proudly wore that animated cape everyone was jealous of me having it.
Then I died in the Wilderness since I didn't know it's gonna be lost upon death and on top of that that account was stolen from me.
Year later with much more knowledge I went at the Fire Cave fight again, this time getting that cape on my first try and it didn't feel so good like it did before, I was much higher level, had almost the best gear in every slot, had access to potions I never had before and overall that firecape although must've been impressive for the regular player, for me it wasn't.
So I decided to creat another account and get the firecape on even weaker account than I did the first try.
Sure, I had the knowledge, but going in almost full Rune armour deemed impossible.
After another million tries in almost the whole Rune armour set, I finally got it and again I felt that dopamine rush. So I decided to search for another challenge and hence my love for creating my own ways to play every single god damn game was born.
The latest where I "use" such method is Escape from Tarkov. I've been playing that game ever since the Alpha came out thanks to my TH-camr friend who god hold of 2 pass accounts.
At the time I had my poor old nVidia GeForce 9800GT which resulted in unbelivable 15 FPS and blue screens after playing the game for too long, yet I had so much fun.
Finally made myself to upgrade to GTX960 which helped little bit, yet I was still playing at like 40-50 fps most of the time.
Even with such handicap I've managed to acquire Kappa container numerous times, did everything the game had to offer over the years over and over and with every new thing added? You bet your kidney I tried it out.
But afterall it again felt lame to get Kappa container like I did several times before, so I started restricting my playthroughs, later on when I talked my friends into playing it with me (around patch 0.11 when the game finally became more popular) I let them to play as they pleased, only helped when they asked me to, but I had different plans.
I was going shotguns only for one wipe and sure it deemed impossible at the time, since shotguns were purely early/mid game weapons, the so called "leg meta" was a viable options, but players with KEDRs and other SMGs had the luxury of just dumping the whole mag, yet with a shotgun you had to try really hard.
Although I wasn't succesful at first, I tried another wipe on top where I couldn't use the flea market. It took much much longer, but I succeeded and acquired Kappa container with only shotguns (had to use some other weapons for quests, but for example SVD kills still were able to do on factory, pistol kills were super easy as well and AK-74U for example on Customs were only used as a secondary weapon on scavs only... all PMC kills outside of quest kills were with shotguns.)
And yes I must agree that this must sound super horrible for some and for some it must sound super boring.
For those I'm gonna say that I did the very same thing with only pistols, only KEDR/KLIN, only mosin and now I have sights on doing the same thing with only MP-18 which is a single shot rifle (categorized as a shotgun fsr) and ON TOP me and my friends created a sort of a "grocery list" of tasks we all must complete before certain things can be unlocked.
i.e. before any level 2 trader we must get 10 melee kills, 2 grenade kills, at least 1 boss kill and have above 5m roubles to name a few.
We all sat down one evening and everyone wrote 150 tasks which we then threw into a randomizer and let the random chance decide what we gon' do.
We also did a Tarkov Bingo where one night we all had free time the next day and we had 6 hours to fill out the bingo card.
That's how I enjoy games nowdays, even if it's a singleplayer game I just set myself a goal that seems impossible and complete it.
If the game cannot offer much more challenges, I decide to 100% the game and consider it DONE.

This reminds me of when I was playing Daggerfall, and had accepted a quest for defeating a creature in someone's home. It was a daedroth, and I had no weapons that could harm it because of material immunity. So, with 3% hand-to-hand skill, I punched, kicked, and kited the thing around the dining room for 10 minutes... before my guy passed out from exhaustion. I had to bully the giant scary demon lizard with baby punches, leave, rest at the inn, and walk back in to finally punch its skull in. Afterwards, of course, I made a hand-to-hand character.

This is a really good video. I feel like you close the video with perhaps even an insight out of games. That failing multiple times to finally succeed creates so much more value than just succeeding right away.
I’ve seen the same sentiment in some modern philosophy actually. People like Slavoj Zizek, Peter Rollins, and similar modern philosophers that tend to take Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan seriously have started to emphasize the psychoanalytic concept “death drive.” If I understand it all correctly, this sort of repetition and failure is an example of this “death,” as compared to “life” forces such as the pleasure behind a good meal or receiving a gift. And this death drive in the philosophy I think is supposed to be the only way to accumulate great value in one thing, such as that one quest in assassin’s creed, or perhaps a romantic partner, so on and so forth. I think you’ve found something quite profound :)

It feels weird hearing you make a video about the exact thing I also love to do in Ubisoft games. I guess it’s because there aren’t many other leveled open world games that let you force this kind of difficulty, but it can be really fun and rewarding to beat challenges in games much before you’re meant to. It’s a rewarding kind of cheating the system.
In fact, I think the first time I ever interacted with a game like this was AC Revelations. The moment they plopped me in the open world, I set out on a quest to liberate every sector of the map before I did any of the main story. Most of that quest was spent fighting enemies with enormous health pools, but back then the hidden blade was still capable of insta-killing any enemy in combat, provided you could time its minuscule parry window dozens of times in a row.

I remember trying to kill him, probably dozens of times, like you, and just throwing myself at him. Eventually I did kill him & was extremely disappointed by the little loot and XP I got, but it still felt amazing to finally beat him... In an ampitheatre no less. I was definitely entertained.

I had something similar happen to me recently playing Nier Replicant. In one of the overworld areas, sometimes this big enemy with a boss health bar appears. The first time I encountered them was the same as you describe in the video: one or two hits and I was dead, meanwhile I can only chip away at their health bar. But with how hard it was, I thought that I was guaranteed an awesome sword at the end or something. Turns out its just a beefy enemy who becomes a mainstay in the later parts of the game, and who you end up being able to kill within 10 seconds or so. But that first time instilled this weird amount of respect in me every time I saw that enemy again.

I like that thought process to an extent. It definitely adds weight to interactions and the like in a scenario like this, but then I think of how it's such a waste of time to try to overcome that single obstacle like that. Obviously playing the game is a waste too, but you get the point. For reasons like that I dislike the Odyssey style of level requirements. If anything, it forces me to ensure I don't explore "too much". I get the interest though, your point is valid for sure.

I actually had a really similar experience when playing MMOs not optimally, most of the F2P stuff are grindy and most of the quests feels generic so sometime I choose to play them avoiding EXP boosts, bosses that I could shred in seconds becomes something resembling a dark souls boss where you need to be focused and observe all attack patterns, this approach never let me on higher levels but I think now I have much more fond memories of those generic F2P than everyone else.
An RPG with no level adjustments to you is what most of the people really need to feel an adventure most of the time

We have simillar approch to games, i did just that in AC:Valhalla and it was greatest 300 hours i experienced in this decade. However due to very flexible difficulty adjustment i did managed to set it just high enough for fight to be Long and engaging! i reccomend such approch to everyone, especially considering how fast you can level up in that game, so an option to Force everyone on the map to always be max 50 levels less than you is neccessarry ( the levels numbers in this game may sound high, but in terms of balance between locations i found it great )

When I was about six years old, I frequently played Crash Bandicoot: Crash of the Titans on my PlayStation 2. My dad, unaware of the prevalence of counterfeit PS2 discs, may have purchased a bootleg copy. I made it halfway through the game, but it consistently froze during a forest level's cutscene, forcing me to reset the console. This issue, along with the use of bootleg memory cards, corrupted my save file. Despite investing 2-3 hours in each attempt, I couldn't understand why the game kept freezing. Eventually, I gave up on finishing it. After watching your video, I've decided to try completing the game again using emulation.

Back then, it was the prettiest game i've ever played, but now, i redownloaded the game not too long ago, played for like 10 to 15 minutes but it wasn't the same, i hated it. I quickly closed the game because i didn't want to ruin this nostalgic feeling i had playing the game. I had a similar experience with The Witcher 3. I tried to take on DLC content early and under-leveled. I had gotten quite good at combat, and was able to fight for fairly long periods without taking any hits (all of which were instant death). After several attempts, managing to defeat an enemy or 2, I realized my weapon was about to break and all of my progress in this flawless attempt was to be for naught. I could have gone back more prepared, but I prefer to brute skill my way through a problem. Thankfully I was born in NA and I can get by without knowing any smokes or flashes.
I hate weapon durability as a game mechanic, though Lies of P gets a pass with their implementation.

I then scavenged the whole map for tenths of hours and completed all side quests i could find, as if it was the main quest. I then decided to give another go to Diamond City and entered without any harm. It was not what the devs planned, and i might also be the only one who experienced this, but i enjoyed it.

During my playthrough of Odyssey, I decided that Origins was simply too easy for me so I cranked it up to the highest difficulty. I'm pretty sure half of my playtime was spent retrying fights, but even as lackluster as the crappy reward may have been, it did feel good to get. Perhaps it could be used to get a pseudo version of the "you improve not your character" mentality... but it's probably just a waste of time.

This is the reason I always play triple A games on their hardest difficulty settings. Because, yeah, the way they handle difficulty is often stupid and frustrating, but at the very least it helps a lot to scratch that "itch". It makes everything that much more memorable and forces you way more to interact with all these game-systems they put in, you'd otherwise pretty much ignore on a normal playthrough.
