Very good video. As you mentioned the first game of a certain type is always regarded as the best. Star Realms and Gloomhaven, Tigris & Euphrates and Catan are examples of this.
I own a few of these games and I agree with you, but we love the Exit series. Me and my husband have played them al (that have been released in Dutch). I must admit that I think the last ones are maybe not the best, but with Christmas we have played one of the advent calenders and we enjoyed it very much.
I love splendor and I didn't expected this game to be good. And here is the deal with this game: You can play it with anyone. I played with priests, seminarists, my father, people that never considered playing a boardgame like the others in my collection. This followed by Azul are the games that I consider that literary anybody would like to play. You can fit this in a lunchbreak, in a beer party, in a family lunch... And as simple as it is, it still has it deepness. You can read the following actions an the game becomes better as the players becomes better in the game. After playing this, it's much easier to present family games... And when you want to play a a light, quick game and chating and laught... Splendor is still excelent for the heavy gamers and for the casuals. This game means a lot for me. Made me closer to persons that I would not talk with so much, united my family, and made them more gamers.
i LOVE Sagrada! I tried Roll Player and I simply didn't enjoyed it as much. I think all games ranked well are there because there is enough people (who participate in bgg scoring system) who enjoys it that much. For example, Terraforming Mars is a game that I hate, it gave me bad experiences, but I can definitely understand that if it's high it's because a lot of people had different experiences with it and there is enough people enjoying it to put it high in the ranking. Tigres and Euphrates is a masterpiece not only because of the scoring system but because it manages to make a perfect abstract war game very interactive nad stratigic with many ways to score and 2 different ways of conflict. You can even make your opponents fight against each other to make one of them weaker so you can captilize on it somehow, it's just a brillant game and it deserves to be even higher imo. I Played 30+ Knizia titles and Tigres is not my favorite game, maybe not even top 3, but I understand why it should be number 1 in general for the bgg audience, especially because people who vote there usually are more passionate gamers, so people who are used to more complicated games. For me, Samurai and Through the Desert are my favorites for now. Splendor has engine building in a simple way with a skin/art and components that captures non gamers (something Gizmos doesn't do), for that reason alone I understand how it's high. A lot of people who are gaming now started with Splendor as one of their first games (including myself and my wife). Now I don't have it anymore because I prefer Splendor Duel, but original Splendor deserves his spot and contributed a lot for the hobby imo.
Yeah an overrated list is definitely subjective and should be taken with a grain of salt. That being said I do respect what many of these games have accomplished and even enjoy many of them just not as much as others do. Thanks for watching!
Interesting list and your personal reasons behind your choices. I do think a game coming earlier ( chronologically), presenting a fun mechanism in a way that is easy to grasp and being pleasant to look at are all factors. One I sense that is overrated as a game, but scores high on the “ cute” factor is “Flamecraft”.
Games I own or played: Blood Rage - Yes, overrated but still fun, depends on the players Gloomhaben JOTL - more fun than the big one, easier to play, i like it. Star Realms - Yes, overrated, but i like it. It's fast Tigris & euphrates - yes, overrated brainburner, i would play it but it's hard to find players for it EXIT - depends on the game/scenario, some riddles are very hard 7th continent - like it, nice solo experience The game i despise the most -> Spirit Island - very hard; even winning, I never felt that i accomplished something; it's boring
Interesting video. I only play solo games and I enjoy 7th Continent. If you only played solo games would 7th Continent remain on this list? Enjoyed your video and take care.
I think Sagrada is ranked higher than Roll Player simply because low number dice are still useful. I know you can manipulate the dice in Roll Player but too many low dice is a killer. I own both and don’t see much overlap over than dice drafting and there are dozens of them that don’t get compared.
I can't agree more with your take on playing a game you don't like multiple times. I abhor Settlers of Catan, and gamers are like you have to play it more to enjoy it. No, I've played it a few times and ever time was tedious. I would rather do something fun.
Overrated is just another personal rating. I think BGG does a pretty good job with the wild differences of ratings given. I use it as a reference, but I know it will seldom match my own estimation of a game. I do believe some people are missing out on games they would like, by not playing them, or not playing them enough AND learning the rules and strategies. For example, Mouse Cheese Cat Cucumber. Granted, seriously competitive people will not play it if you pay them cash. "Mouse, cheese, my a$$". But, anyone who plays it just once will probably not see the (moderate) challenge or the fun of getting better at it. I played it about 6 times before I found out I was playing it incorrectly. That one rule made a big difference, and now I really like it (8 out of 10), and my gaming friends like it. (The Mouse and Cat can ONLY move if a new card is played next to them, even on top of another card.) How about a list of underrated games?
Good list, but I would argue that Sagrada has a more original theme (stained glass window making) and Roll Player’s theme is just generic fantasy. I really wanted to love Roll Player, but I just wasn’t sold on what you do thematically in the game. Plus Sagrada has a tighter more fun rules set IMO.
For me it’s Seven Wonders. I played it once and hated every single moment. I do love JotL- and I enjoyed the puzzle. I did need to go through a couple of scenarios twice, but once I got it, it was a great experience.
Good review, but you’re wrong on T&E,as well as Splendor. T&E is a good game because it’s the grandfather of a lot of other Knizia games. Splendor is unique because it is essentially an abstract game that actually fits the theme. Not too many set collection games can do that.
totally agree on splendor. century golem or spice road significantly better but similar mechanics. disagree on through the ages, although ive only played the app but I can play a 3 person game against 2 computers in just under 30 minutes (although your argument is understandable since it was in top #5). underrated as far as BGG ranking, I would put puerto rico, lords of waterdeep, isle of cats, parks, maybe everdell. when it comes to overall popularity, thats a whole different ballgame as a lot of mass market games which are absolute garbage but immensely popular would be part of the list: monopoly, uno, candy land (was shocked and disappointed at seeing two adults play this at a board game store), risk, candy land. overall popularity of designer games, catan would be #1. Catan's placement in 500 range on bgg I think is about where it should be, but its still immensely popular
Good choices, well except Exit Series. its really good, they give you a one time really good experience. its like playing your favorite game, but just skipping to the best parts (usually).
Thanks for sharing! There's always going to be a subjective factor in such lists.. Yet thinking "hey, I agree/disagree with that" is both fun and informative. So I agree with some and disagree with some (normal). I strongly disagree with T&E - it needs a bit of time, atmosphere and right people to fully blossom. I think it's a genius and atmospheric game. An abstract that simulates theme well!
Hello, I found your channel today. Great content! My thoughts: Through the Ages is underrated 😅 Blood Rage is pretty fun, but I agree about it suffering from imbalances. A bit overrated. Gloomhaven (whichever one) I totally agree: overrated games. Sagrada bores me to dead. Star Realms is a fun duel, a fast paced deck building, maybe a bit overrated. T&E is a great game. If it were in the top 10 I'd say it is overrated. Splendor bored me so much that I sold it almost immediately after buying it. Steam is one of the most underrated games of all time according to my playing group. A masterpiece! (We play only with the "advanced" rules.) Exit games are, generally speaking, very overrated. 7th Continent is the only one I haven0t played.
I would say that games like Steam are still relatively high because they have a lot of residual rankings from their early phases. Steam came out in 2009 and reached a high of 20. And at that time, they were the cutting edge that had enough to hold up through later years. There is something like 11000 copies still owned by BGG players and it still get some play in. I quite like Steam, and Age of Steam, but they hardly get many plays for me these days. I am not disagreeing with your comment that it is probably overrated for the present day - but I doubt this rating is because of recent action.
Sagrada is definitely overrated. Take away the pretty boards and there's not a lot left, just a fairly bland puzzle. Some compare it favourably to Azul but Azul is a vastly superior GAME, IMHO.

I don’t think you justified why you think most of these board games are overrated. You sing their praises but then you criticize why it’s so highly rated. Doesn’t make sense. Your criticism that board games are old or take a long time to play is not validation enough for inclusion on your list.
I am sorry I am not sure what empirical data I can provide as validation for a game being overrated. This list, as with all of my other top 10 lists, is a completely subjective and biased list. I simply believe these games are ranked higher than they deserve to be. Just a gut feeling. Thanks for watching!
I Agree, Tigris & Euphrates does not belong in the top 100 BGG anymore. Gaming has changed, gamers have changed. But for me it is one of the best games ever made, to this day.
If it is still one of the best games ever made, why shouldn't it be in the top 100? How big is your list of "top games ever made" if a game that's "one of them" isn't in the top 100?
For me, out of the game in my collection I've played (there's a bunch I've yet to touch), I would say Terraforming Mars, Unsettled and Vindication all felt pretty overrated, as did DEI.
I haven't watched the whole video (because i haven't played all of the games / no interest in playing them) but those that i have played ... Not that i disagree on the pics, because i don't care about BGG ratings, which seems to be the baseline of why it's overrated, but i disagree with some of the assumptions. Engine building Games are slow in the beginning and this part can drag on. Heavier ones give you other things to do. Splendor gives you these chips which feel great, rewarding and you can play around with them. By the time your engine starts rolling you barely touch the chips again. Tigris and Euphrates... In TE you are not constantly attacking other players. You are attacking kingdoms that can be controlled by multiple players and you do this to gain points in usually 1-2 categories and then you are fine. You don't need more points in these categories and the "defender" probably has already gotten the points when he placed the tiles. So is this really so much more "devastating" compared to being cut off in Through The Desert or Blue Lagoon, losing auctions in any of his auction games, not getting the card you need in Lost Cities, your stuff beeing stolen in Pikomino or your path blocked in El Dorado? Finally. Be careful with the phrase: "For it's time". People have been playing games for thousands of years. Some games that are played today have the same rules for hundreds of years.
