Odd how on a video of Goju Ryu hybrids didn't list Isshin-Ryū. An art that is a hybrid of Goju and Shorin Ryu.

I had to "hybrid" my rogue school of MIZU-GOJU-RYU because of politics. When I was an active teacher I used Goju as the primary base with other martial arts blended in. Additionally I also used modern sports psychology and MMA style training. I feel people discount the flexible nature of the Goju Systems in general. Goju is truly a well rounded philosophy of life. I would suggest any serious martial artist to explore this system.

Old Mr.M thank you. I came from what I thought was a traditional goju school and studied things like wrestling and Aikido. My view is we are all learning to better ourselfs.....that is what matters.

@@mizukarate I came from the GojuKai school of GojuRyu under Sensei Guy Kurose ,rip, he modified the traditional low guard to a more modern high guard , he was also the captain of the Tenri University full contact Karate team in Japan when he was in college

Well Mr.M my teachers were Mark Peccorella, Tommy Mccormick, Peter Brody, and Bob Taiani(some names misspelled). Anyway I broke from them for political reasons. Anyway the system(methodology), kata, philosophy and application are what matter. My teachers gave it to me and I applyed it. This is what everyone should do. Goju is like a computer operating system that can be tricked out. I bet you can do amazing things because of it. I know it is highly beneficial to me.

@@oldschoolkarate-5o My teachers explained Goju kinda like this:
      1. Everything in the universe starts Go(Hard in Japanese). This is kinda like a manifestation, birth, or beginning.
      2. Then things get Ju(Japanese for soft). This is like a settling in or relaxation within the universe.
      3. Like the Yin/Yang in Taoism this universe is an interplay of Goju elements. Nothing is 50/50...balance spins and moves like 20/80, 40/60, 90/10, etc. So you need to go with this flow. By understanding yourself and body machanics this can be achieved.

I really want to know what he is referring to. I'm apart of a very traditional Okinawan goju ryu school that doesn't spar. I joined a ShinKyokushin School soley for the sparring. The problem is they have their own kyokushin kata, so I practive two sets of kata. The Seido and Seidokaikan karate I see online uses kyokushin kata as well. I really want to know what's he's referring to.

Mas Oyama was high ranked in Shotokan, Goju Ryu, and Daito Ryu. In fact his dojo was originally a Goju Ryu before he created his new style of Kyokushin. In other words Kyokushin is a Goju Ryu hybrid. The style I learned was an early iteration of it before the name change.

The two Goju schools I trained in had nearly 95% identical in techniques, except in the current one I’m in has the son of Masanobu Shinjo as the head of Shobukan Goju Ryu association. This association has an extra kata for beginners and extra dachi katas called Kihon Dachi ichi, kihon dachi ni and kihon dachi San. The rest is certain movements are more direct rather than big movements compared to what I previously learned beforehand. Plus in this current school, they don’t call certain partner practice kata “kiso kumite” like my first one, instead they call it “yakusoku kumite”

Naihanchi is mentioned as a fundamental Kata in an article published by Miyagi. Our Hangetsu and Wansu comes from Shotokan.

They joined Kyokushin in the 50s? How 🤔 Tadashi nakamura a former teacher of mine joined with Oyama when he was 11 in 1953 he said at the time they just called it oyama dojo. In his book it talks about it kyokushin wasn't officially establish by name until about 1964 so that doesn't really make any sense.

@@mizukarate well I was trying to figure out who the group he is talking about is I am from NYC I am not family with them personally but I don't know everyone on earth and NY has millions of people. But the kyokushin timeline makes 0 sense. Now the characteristics he mentioned with the Zenpo Hiji (forward elbow) is true kyokushin doesn't do that when u was with Nakamura it was a rising elbow when I switched to training under Scot Mertz it because the forward elbow which is a big Goju trademark. Maybe hw misspoke who knows. But in another video he made some mistakes with things too. He called kote kitte, kote kitai lol that's a basic forearm strike drill we have kitte means forging. Sanchin isn't called an hour class stance. Goju isn't all about the Ibuki breathing it's only one of the 5 methods of breathing. Just like there are 5 power generators in Goju.

The best advice I can give him is go to Okinawa idk if he has speak with people it takes time to build a relationship where they open up. My instructor lives on island he's interviewed family members the granddaughter of Higashionna Kanryo is a friend of his he also knows funakoshis niece through this type of investigating. There's a good series called Okinawan masters on here with a group of foreigners who live on Okinawa who interview these people. Old timers to get real information. Google doesn't give all the answers unfortunately. His information is a bit off but hey he's trying where most are too lazy.

I've been told that Go is Japanese for 5, Ju is Japanese for 10, and Ryu is Japanese for 9. 5-10-9 Karate?

    • @ArtofOneDojo
      @ArtofOneDojo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

In Japanese, words will have different meanings depending on the context they are used in (English has similar examples). A word used in one sentence can have a different meaning than if it is used in a different context. For example, "Ryu" actually means dragon as a word by itself. But when used as a suffix at the end of another word it means "School", or "Style".
"Go" DOES mean 5, but the word "Go" also means "Hard" in Japanese.
Jū can mean 10 when counting, but it also means "Soft" or "Gentle". Judo = Gentle Way. Jujutsu = Gentle Technique. Goju = Hard Soft.
Ryu does not mean 9, 9 is "Kyuu" or "Kyu".

Goju Ryu should not be mixed w/ any other style. Because Goju Ryu, and her sister styles like Uechi-Ryu & Shroin-Ryu ( the 3 main states of Okinawan Karate ) are all complete styles. The only reason why, ppl branched out of Goju l-Ryu or mixed Goju-Ryu; one, they were incompetent at Karate or two, they didn’t have the patience or commitment to put into the grind and effort to reach higher ranks of Goju Ryu.
