A living lend folks...no joke here...this man is drumming s best kept secret! I did a clinic with Dennis Chambers and this man showed up in a room of 400+ drummers. ALL eyes and hears went on him when he spoke from the back of the room...nothing he says about drumming is untrue and he has worked or played or taught everyone from Buddy Rich to me...Thank you Mr. Jim Chapin...one of a kind.
The audio is not matched to the video on this one. It makes it very difficult to follow. Jim was the bomb. One of his students, Henrique De Almeida, has taken the Moeller and expanded it musically to astonishing levels.
smooth explanation, he explains very clear the exercises. I've always wondered how Jim Chapin played when he was young, if he's a machine at his age! now right away to the kit.
I thought my stick control was amazing...then I started watching his videos. I'm awed by him and amazed. I now realize I'm not even close to is talent. He does it like nothing.
That man's got style. I think his expression really comes through in his playing. As a side note, have any of you noticed that many of the notes that he plays with his right hand is in a very old style grip. Check out how many of the notes are played with the fulcrum of the stick at the pinky. That's some real ancient style playing used to conserve energy on long marches. Bet he learned that from Sanford.
I remember seeing him at a drum clinic and after gregg bisonette played jim said "his playing was just delicious" his blue binder book will last you forever..get it then play metal..
@MrKilltastic It used to be that playing music was an occasion worth dressing for. You can still find it, but it's increasingly rare. It feels good to perform in a suit though.
I can't believe he died....I just found out today. I almost bought his book recently (but didn't think I was ready for it), now I really would love to have it.
Here's a feeling of accomplishment I think, If you can replicate any sound at any point in this video that Jim Chapin is teaching you on your pad or snare.
Did you notice that his fulcrum wasn't even between the index and thum? His index is hanging off and the fulcrum was between the middle finger and thumb - I saw a video of Dave Weckl explaining how it gives a more relaxed and open sound.
To all suckers who allow themselves to judge or compare. Just do it ! Try and fall ! You'll understand that you're not even a padawan and that this Great Drummer, Jim, was more than a Jedi Master. Hail to you, Jim !
I want to learn traditional grip myself but I wont want to hurt my hands. I can get my thumb to rebound the stick and I don't slice my strokes either but I have a hard time getting rebound at tap heights and making my left strokes sound like my right. I dont know where/how to find a credible teacher.
lol I just started playing drums so I dont even know what he means with a paradiddle but lol.. Would think that he is such a good drummer by just seeing him like that in a suit on the street? wow. :D sick speed
Can anyone explain what he was doing on the 3ed one? He had said i did this a minute ago and he then started doing something that looked like a single 4 sroke roll with an accent on 4,, so no he didn't do what he said a minute ago he was doing 2 para-diddle diddle and a single para-diddle a minute ago! wtf I'm lost! so was he just doing the single para-diddle only or was he going by another prier video lesson?
lol my teacher, who was only a few years older than me (though still RIDICULOUS on drums) thought the traditional rudiments were a waste of time. i use the Moeller on a completely amateur scale, but i find it more helpful to practice the technique along with practice books (e.g., Cirrone & Wilcoxen). it's a waste of time for me to use the traditional rudiments for the sole purpose of practicing the Moeller. that being said, I'm sure Chapin only showed the rudiments as a very general example.
@yeahyeahyeahyeahya i dont particularly like travis barker, but you are so wrong, he practiced snare drum for hours and hours every day for years. hes technically brilliant
3 years later, but I think I got it, Jim was talking about another video lesson on this 3ed step. Down up was a double stroke lesson he showed on one of his other videos, so it’s confusing because he made it seem as if he was talking about the exercise prier in this video. The other video Jim was showing was a double stroke method and using either a single hand, say right hand being down up, down, up down up act. Or he alternated, Right hand down up, left hand down up so on. Jim also did a video on triplets being down snap up look for those videos it's out there. So Jim on the 3ed step was talking about another video that he showed a double stroke roll using the the down up exercise rechnic. On step 3 its right hand strike down, left was a straight hit, and then right a wip up repeating with the same hands. Then he shows this again but using a doubles straight hit on his left hand. Right hand strike down, left hand 2 straight hits and right hand wiped up!! seems he's keeping the left hand as a straight hits and he dosn’t use the down up method like he’s doing on the right hand or it would then had been, right hand down, left hand down up, right hand up, so or you getting it? Now if I’m wrong tell me because without anyone here helping us to figure it out I tried my best!!!!
I just think it's stupid to say "Travis Barker is the best Drummer in the world" (like all the kids do...). I mean, look at the famous TB snare solos and then watch the Chapin video again. He's been doing way faster and more amazing things as a warmup back in the 50's, and everybody is talking about Barkerboy and how "creative" his basic rudiment marching "solos" are. It's not prejudiced to face the facts. Greez
I tend to think that travis is technically speaking a really good drummer, but i think he lacks the serious jazz dynamics, and musicality, although I would argue that for a pop punk drummer hes done some pretty musically interesting stuff with blink 182, (I dont really know a good example, but..)
This guy is a Legend!! Taught pros like dennis chambers Tony Royster Jr and shits turds that play better toilet tunes than Travis f%$%#&* Barker or the whole blink182 band....by hiself one hand behind his back with a snare let alone a whole kit.
This whole "Speed, Power, Control, Endurance" is mother of all drum instructional videos!
Jim ChapIn ROCKS!!!

Still alive in every thing about drum...
Rip Jim.
From Brasil.
The audio is not matched to the video on this one. It makes it very difficult to follow. Jim was the bomb. One of his students, Henrique De Almeida, has taken the Moeller and expanded it musically to astonishing levels.
Man, this dude is a legend. I bought his DVD a few months ago and have learnt a ton already. Much love from New Zealand, Jim. Cheers mate!
Such amazing sound quality! Every single stroke is easily heard....
Mestre Jim Chapin .saudades desse mestre da bateria e da técnica Moeller.👏👏👏👏👏👏
What an amazing teacher he was!
RIP Jim
I had studied with Jim at the Long island Drum Center back when it was in Bellmore NY. Jim's Jazz book is an amazing tool.
No substitute for a great teacher. This man is awesome.
smooth explanation, he explains very clear the exercises. I've always wondered how Jim Chapin played when he was young, if he's a machine at his age! now right away to the kit.
This man gets such a strength on every hit.. He was pure rock. Rest In Peace Jimmy.
It gives you a feeling...of accomplishment, i think ❣
The master showing us how it's done. Like his positive approach too.
Jim is a legend! Everybody should study these exercises...
Amazing technique. Amazing man.

I thought my stick control was amazing...then I started watching his videos. I'm awed by him and amazed. I now realize I'm not even close to is talent. He does it like nothing.

Pure magic. And his expresions, omg, is he Christopher Walkens father xD?
I'm learning from a student of his student current, Dom Famularo's student Stephen Flinn.

lol I just started playing drums so I dont even know what he means with a paradiddle but lol.. Would think that he is such a good drummer by just seeing him like that in a suit on the street? wow. :D sick speed
@yeahyeahyeahyeahya "technically a horrible drummer" is unreasonable; there is something to appreciate in everyone, including travis barker! :)
LOL @ seeing travis barker typed on a Jim Chaplin video.
for traditional grip or what do you mean?
jesus old man...dont melt the rubber
he's already dead but im still studyng theses videos
Seriously... of all the videos on here, why is this one so screwed up? I can't even watch it.
ive never seen a drummer in a suit
@yeahyeahyeahyeahya Thank You! Somebody Else Who Is A Student Of The Game Finally Agrees W/Me!

Is he using american grip or german grip? D:
maybe... but i think he's just concentrated. he must have practised that stuff like mad to become that fast. he should know by heart what he is doing
rip
when you first look at him you wouldnt expect him to be a drummer. Wearin a suit and shyt
Travis Barker is a pop-punk drummer..Jim Chapin is an educator- drummer..or drummer-educator..both are good though :-)
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Your point is so true. But its spelt too. hahaha
travis barker who ??
all you have to do is go to scopions84's profile youll find nick jonas playing drums....you will find his opinion on drumming means nothings.
convincing....
I just pooped myself
heh, yea!
superb drummer,, but i cant help thinking he looks like someone in the 80's tv series dallas.
