- Mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča sings the Habanera ("L'amour est un oiseau rebelle) from Bizet’s Carmen in an exclusive event recorded at The Greene Space at WQXR in NYC.
Brian Zeger, Artistic Director of the Vocal Arts Department at The Juilliard School, accompanies her on piano.

Operatic technique requires pronouncing french differently then when it is spoken. This isn't french class, conversation, or musical theater, it places the vocal production first and subordinates pronouncation of whatever the language is to best serve that. A lighter, finer, voice singing lighter music might get away with more, but with such a rich thicker tone, she's never going to shut down the vocal line or sacrifice the freedom to color carmen in rich full tones to deliver the letter N. We only rarely pronounce Ns and other things singing french. Indeed, its literally trained out of us.
@@donizettirules the genre of the repertoire is Opera Comique. and she should at least try to fit in that genre. she lost the intimacy, sensuality, ruthlessness which lay deeply in the French language.
