I kinda understand why they did not show Laena claiming Vhagar earlier, as it would make this moment lose weight by being the same type of stuff, but I am glad they did film it so we can have more moments like this in an extended version.
Yeah, I came to that realization when Condal said they wanted to hype up "claiming a dragon". Doing this is most certainly the better way. I think even if people didn't catch the fact that this was Lena's dragon in the last couple of episodes, they will have figured it out by now. That's why I'm not gonna call the Addam Velaryon/Seasmoke dilemma a plot hole, they could give a reasonable explanation. Condal has been knocking it out of the park, he should be really proud of the work they did here. And yes, I am one of the people who got to see the episode with the brightness and contrast turned up and it looks majestic.
I think the truth is that this show is intended to focus on the Targs who are at the center of the conflict, and there wouldn’t have really been a point to showing that scene for Laena.
The fact that 10 years old kid taming the largest dragon alive is too badass🔥🔥 🔥 Aemond is the perfect embodiment of how I imagine a Targaryen would be!
Leo does such an amazing job as Aemond. I love how he's initially this beaten-down, bullied kid who doesn't have his own dragon, to the rider of the biggest dragon around and so incredibly-confident. I also love how he pronounces the Valyrian language, really rolling it. The later fight with the other kids was absolutely brutal too.
I love the design of Vhagar! You really convey her age with small details like the excess skin from her neck and her general slow movement, but at the same time she is definitely powerful. The biggest and most dangerous being on the planet (that we know of). And the sound she makes are perfect, the low growls and grumbles conveys just how large her nasal flaps and inner vocal chords must be compared to a human, you would almost hear them vibrate themselves being that close to her.
Word! As a 56 year old, once beautiful woman, Vhagar's excess saggy skin hits me in a deep, dark place. 🤣 Seriously though, the attention to detail is amazing.

Even though Aemond wasn't a dragon rider from birth and got mocked from his brother and cousin. I love how he proves everyone wrong and claims Vhagar for his own. He is totally a fan favorite and a strongly portrayed character.

On the topic of the last episode and claiming Vhagar, I gotta say, the kid fight scene was intense. With how common violence and gore is nowadays, especially when CGI is combined with super/fantasy plots, no one is really shocked by violence anymore. The fight scene between the kids did just that to me though. All these kids going 100% in the aim to maim each other shocked me more than any giga violent 2022 show/movie. Mostly because I didn't expect that type of rough brawling and beatings from these child actors. Their amazing acting made me uneasy in ways that edgy CGI gory explosions can never do. Most importantly the violence isn't just for shock value, it's purposeful to the story.
Its because we are so used of adult violence that it really does not speak to us much when they are just fighting. The kids fighting this brutally and "disciplined", compared to IRL kids, speaks to the fact that the boys at least were trained to kill and fight for a few years already. The fact that all these kids are actually fighting for their life here, with knifes and rocks and shit, is something we as adults often forget how capable kids are of shit like that.
From Aemond claiming Vhagar to the children fighting and then the royal rumble with Alicent and Rhaenyra, it was the best stretch in HOTD so far and showed the true potential of this show. If they do the CGI, writing, directing and acting performances justice in season 2, that will be one of the best seasons in TV history. We all know the music will be epic.

Ive watched many many shows through my lifetime but I never actually gave credit to an amazing crews with all that effects and stunts, this is just amazing to watch whats actually happening behind the scenes.
I agree. I find child actors tend to fall into one of two categories - the ones that are good but need a few more acting lessons and the others who are just plain awful. But the child actors on HOTD were amazing - no stiff awkwardness in their performances
