  • After spending some time with the new car, I give an owner's review of the car. This is a 2015 VW Golf R MK7. These are some of my early impressions, as well as some things that I've noticed about the car. Maybe I'll do a long term review after a few months.
    Sorry for my dirty car! Just came home from a long trip.
    Please subscribe for more videos to come soon!

    The rotten sock smell you are getting from your golf r air conditioner is due to the condensation not draining out onto the ground beneath the car. When you are running the air conditioner, condensation collects in a drip pan that has a drain that exits beneath the car and drains on the ground.
    You should see a small puddle under the car after the air conditioner has been running awhile, this is normal. Your drain hose is either missing or plugged up, so the condensation fills up the collection pan and overflows usually on the carpet or under the dash somewhere. Look under another golf to see where the drain is located by looking for the dripping on the pavement if the drain is working properly. My 2015 Acura creates a 1 foot wide puddle under the car in hot humid weather with the air conditioner running.

    Loved this Owner's Review. I am considering purchasing this vehicle and wanted the perspective of someone who had to pay for it. I wasn't looking for just the speeds and feeds but more of a complete overview. Thank you.

    In order to avoid turbo lag when you up shift in either DSG or Manuel mode, you need to utilize the kickback feature. This will get you from stand still very quickly. How to use kickback: depress the accelerator hard, take your foot off, then accelerate hard a again. Basically you're double tapping the gas. This is a manufacturing trait of Volkswagen. I've owned 7 of them.

    • @zed4me
      @zed4me  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting. Any link to find more info about this? I've used a quick hard tap on the accelerator in order to get the DSG to downshift and engine brake. This worked on the Tiguan as well.

    Enjoyed this video. Really in depth and definitely focused on the fundamentals of it in relation to daily life. I would suggest the longer in depth videos rather than shorter ones. Ones around 20minutes is around right.

    This by far is the best video review i have watch you cover nearly everything in one video. I always prefer long video reviews den the 2min ones. A week ago i have ordered one of these myself and desperately waiting for the car to arrive.
    You should constantly make long videos like this of your golf r giving reviews in your first 1000kms den on 5000kms and etc.

    Been watching some of your reviews, great job. Your information is "useful" unlike many others with their "I've drove more cars..." or "Here's some video footage...", little points & quirks are exactly the info I've been looking for to help me decide on this car.

    Hey, great video. You're very lucky to have gotten one of the few Golf Rs to come into the country this year. I've read some forum posts that say that you can get an ecu remap from APR that resolves a bunch of the issues you covered. I think they talk about fixing the off the line lag, increase both hp during hard accel as well as improve mpg during hwy cruising. I'm really surprised that the dsg doesn't rev match on downshifts, which was something you covered as well. Overall, seriously, thanks for the very in depth and very throrough review!

    • @zed4me
      @zed4me  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      John kolacz It does rev match but it also utilizes it to engine brake, so the end result is a little jerkiness. Sure, it could be designed better, I agree.

    In Canada we don't have the R yet, that's next year, but straight away theres a manual and auto option. We don't need to wait. I got a Golf 1.8t. Didn't buy the GTI because the 1.8t is almost as quick and much cheaper. And the fact that it's better on fuel helps out. I love the mk7! By far the best generation of Golf. Oh! By the way, you don't need to "swipe" that strip on the door handle, a soft press will be suffice.

  • @ceeze9923

    It's in the owner's manual. With the use of the kickback feature in economy mode, you rarely need to switch to sports mode unless you really want to.

  • @ceeze9923
    @ceeze9923 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    All so, to manipulate the gas consumption, I strongly recommend using Sunoco 93 octane topping up on gas. Don't use heat or the AC. And set the cruise control between 55-70 Mph. And try not to utilize the kickback feature. I've gotten over 450 miles a tank out of my Volkswagen. However, this works when making long distance trips not in bumper to bumper city traffic.

    Hi zed4me,
    I recently watched several of your videos as part of my research into possibly buying a Golf R, and I borrowed one for an test drive from a dealer yesterday, dropping it back today. Well, I've just ordered a brand new one & am expecting delivery in early 2016. Just wanted to say thanks for the TH-cam video's. Can't wait to get mine. Best of luck with yours and your med studies.

    zed4me..I want to thank you for your detailed videos, most people don't really like to share the flaws of their newly purchased vehicle but it always helps. I'm actually in the market for the New Golf R...I'm currently in a '12 vw gti. And like you i live in the general NY/Long island area so therefor the street conditions are terrible. I've told this to a lot of people that have asked how i like my gti and my answer is always the same..for NY these golfs are not the best choice. My ride is very rough, a lot of cabin noise, and cant even handle small pot holes. But I have heard vw really worked hard on the golfs suspension and ride quality. If you can maybe maybe mention in your next video how the Golf r does in NY's harsh road conditions..thanks

  • @fredygump5578
    @fredygump5578 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    On MPG....mpg ratings are made for OPTIMAL conditions! I'm noticing the snow, so I'm assume the MPG comments came from winter driving? Cold temps mean dense air, and dense air means more aero drag. More drag = less MPGs. (The car, as a turbo and variable timing, can sense air density and therefore shouldn't have trouble maintaining ideal air/fuel ratio in these conditions as older cars would....so lower economy is mostly due to aero drag.)

    Looks like you need to adjust your side mirrors. The way you have them causes about half of what they reflect to also appear in your rear view, essentially wasting half your mirrors. If you point them further out to eliminate this, you'll decrease your blind spots by 90%.

    Great video I shall be looking for one of these or a GTi in 2016. A very valid point about the clutch in traffic, as an ex mechanic I have a lot of sympathy for the task of the clutch, esp one that you cannot manually control does need a little understanding of just what is going on in there.

    I recently bought a 2015 GTI and liked your review and have a couple thoughts.
    1. On the matter of the paddle shifters being attached to the steering wheel, I agree it can be awkward to use while making sharper turns. You probably should have mentioned that you can tap the stick up or down to shift as well. I use that method for sharper turns and my dad doesn't use the paddles at all.
    2. I was surprised you didn't show launch control.
    3. This one is a question. I've noticed that after the work when the car first starts going it stays in 1st till about 2500 rpm which as you mentioned it normally shifts much earlier. After that it drives as usual; Have you experienced something similar?
    4. The visibility is very good in the Golf but if you are very tall like myself (6'4") you'll find yourself leaning forward sometimes to check a blind spot/ look out a window because your seat is so far back. This probably wont be the case in a two door model as the windows are much longer in those.
    Thanks for the video.

    You can delete that hesitancy in the throttle with a plug and play device called an Idrive &/or there are many other manufacturers that make a electronically adjustable product that plugs in between the wire for the throttle and the flyby wire module.
    It's got nothing to do with the clutch, the engine, or the turbo.

  • @SuperTreyone
    @SuperTreyone 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The laggy feeling in the throttle is just the flyby wire, a lot of cars now days don't use throttle cables, it's all electronic, a lot of cars these days have it so you don't have an instant jolty like throttle, instead you have a smooth take off from stand still

    A "LITTLE" hesitant getting into first gear? It's almost a deal-breaker for me. I actually wasn't that sad to sell an R, because of it. My Toyota Blade Master (cheap Auris body with 276bhp 3.5 V6 softly sprung to the front wheels only) is far safer and more reassuring around town.

  • @decade240

    Regarding the slow speed start, my 135i with the dual clutch transmission does the same thing at low speed, it just doesn't want to go. It annoys me so much I'm selling it. Golf R is on the list.
    And also, don't mean to be the traffic police, but you're straight up running stop signs. Try to be more safe.

    Expecting A118 to arrive tomorrow which I bought partially based on your earlier video. Where did you plug it in for the R? I guess it's not hardwired to the fuse box as I see the cable hanging off on the right. I would definitely be interested in a DIY vid if you're going to hardwire it. Don't own an R, but thinking hard about trading mk5 gti for the 2016 R 6mt. In that respect, I'm also curious if you're planning to get an S3 spare and DIYvid it. And btw, I prefer the longer videos.

    • @zed4me
      @zed4me  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad I could help you make an informed decision. Right now, its plugged into the only cigarette plug right by the armrest. The cable to the right was a quick job because it arrived the same day I was going on my trip, so I didn't get a chance to tidy it up haha I'm thinking about hardwiring it to free up the cigarette plug, so if/when I do that I'll be sure to show how. I don't plan to get the S3 spare, but I do plan on switching to 18" all seasons when the fall is over. The car's AWD handles surprisingly well even on the summer tires, so I don't think I'll be getting a dedicated set of winter tires.

    Hey man, I like your vids. I'm in Canada and ordered a Golf R and should be taking delivery in October. What I have been reading is that the R and the GTI suffer from a bit of throttle lag and that some people that have installed the Pedalbox are getting great results in eliminating the lag. Do you have any plans on picking one up? I'd love to see a vid on what you think.

    I owned a 2003 Z4 manual and 2008 R32 and enjoyed the exhaust note my R32 over the Z. I no longer own either of those and my daily driver is my 97 240sx. I am currently looking at 2014 EvoX, 2016 STI Limited or 2015 Golf R. I did watch your video about why you chose the R over the STI but I am yet to test drive. I prefer perforated Leather over the R's leather. Now that you have owned the R for some time. do you regret your decision in any way. Would you consider the STI or EVO X over the R? I am car shopping and this is a EXTREMELY DIFFICULT decision.

      @zed4me  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ariel Tavarez watch my newest video where i review the 2015 sti. after the review, i came to the conclusion that it would take 10 minutes in each car to tell which one's for you.. they certainly cater to two different groups of people. i confirmed my choice after i drove the sti.. definitely not for me.

  • @Deathrend8481
    @Deathrend8481 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good video. I've been going through the same debate. My issue with the STI is the gas mileage. We currently have a 2013 Passat SEL TDI, however we need a second commuter. I wanted something "fun", AWD, and over 30 MPG highway. The only fear I have is the car for people over 6 feet tall? I'm sitting at 6'4, I'm worried the gold would be a little on the snug side.

    • @zed4me
      @zed4me  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sit in one! No replacement for that. You'd definitely have to move the seats back and lower to the ground. I would skip out on sunroof though to maximize headroom.

    • @Deathrend8481
      @Deathrend8481 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      zed4me I'm not a fan of sunroofs for that reason, even in my truck. The Passat has one and it's not bad though. I've been checking the local dealers to see if one comes in, I'm thinking I'll go sit in a GTI, should be similar if nothing else.

    • @zed4me

      I'm 6'3 and the thing I liked first about VW back in the 90s, especially compared to some French automakers, was it's driver's seat position; I do put it all the way to the floor. Have had sunroofs in the mk4-mk5 golfs and a moonroof in the mk6 jsw. Rear seats have been fine for me too in the golfs, but jsw with moonroof is less ideal in the rear for 6ft+.

    What do you mean by when driving in stop and go traffic, it's like slipping the clutch? How are you supposed to drive with DSG in stop and go traffic?

    • @zed4me
      @zed4me  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** If you drive a manual, anytime you're moving lower than your idle rpm, you have to slip the clutch or risk stalling the engine. The same principle applies here, so if you're traveling at under 3-4mph, the transmission allows clutch slip so you can move at a snail's pace without stalling the engine.
      Best thing to do is either be stopped or completely rolling, not with your foot on the brakes but not completely stopped. Hope that makes sense.

Plus navigation, radio information, car menu, etc. Basically anything you have on your main radio (except a full blown map). The graphics are pretty nice too as an added bonus.

    Hello. I am trying to decide on this vehicle or a 16 charger srt scat pack. As a family man the deciding factor is backseat room. What do you think about passenger space in this vehicle. I know the two cars are very dissimilar, but price is very competitive even though the cars are so different. Thanks for your comments.

    • @zed4me
      @zed4me  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tim Lee Backseats can fit two adults comfortably. Three would be a bit tight, so depending on the family size, srt would make more sense for three big kids. Car seats and stuff fit well in the R though, I can say that much.

      +Marbin Diaz thanks! I ended up getting the charger scat pack. The R is an amazing car, and I will assure everyone, they are very dissimilar. For me, the charger was the best option. In case anyone wonders about large four door cars, if I had to do it all over again, I'd buy the 2016 Chevy SS manual. Just a better sports sedan that is completely invisible to the common guy. The charger scat is AMAZING and has the looks that arrest peoples' attention, but just go throwing it into a corner like you would a true sport sedan. Thanks!!

    Can you expand on the driving characteristics you were talking about being a DSG and clutch slipping and whatnot. I drive in traffic a lot from time to time on the way home from work, would it be better to just sit in one spot instead of creeping along slowly?

    • @zed4me
      @zed4me  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spinal2111 Well the car has two clutches in it. If you're going to keep your foot on the brakes but still be slowly creeping, the only possible way that can happen is by slipping the clutch. You wouldn't do that in a manual, so i'm postulating that you shouldn't do it in the R which is an automated manual. I'd sit in one spot until I can fully let off the brake pedal. Either stopped completely or foot fully off brake pedal. None of that in between stuff for traffic.

    • @Spinal2111
      @Spinal2111 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oh I get it, thanks for clearing that up, I don't ride the brakes anyway, always totally let off and just creep up a bit. Probably gonna be purchasing an R in the next few days 2016 model in Canada, seen your posts on vwvortex, I'll be sure to join once the deal is done!

If that's true then that's pretty disappointing especially for $40,000. I actually owned a 2014 Tiguan se trim. After 20,000 miles I traded it in for a lexus rx350. Thinking of getting one just like yours that's why I watched the whole video. Now I'm kind of debating especially what you said about the dsg transmission.
