I can only imagine the stories “little bear” will be able to tell her friends. This hike will make all future challenges seem minuscule to her. As a parent, I know you’re proud.
So proud! She (and our 3 other children) are also Jiu Jitsu kids and wrestlers, so they have experience with hard. But this…this has taken it to a whole new level of hard and amazing! She’s doing so well. 💙
Parenting is the hardest… Parenting on the side of a Mountian make plans on the fly is unimaginable to me. Good job Momma. Little Bear you will not understand the complexity of Mommas choices until you become a Momma!!! The beauty of storms is the magical rainbows 🌈 that come with the storms ❤ So glad that you found a safe shelter to ride out the storm. I need to get my hands on that tick protection for clothing! Ticks terrify me and I avoid the woods and tall grass because of them!
I love how you acknowledge our Lord and Savior. I wouldn’t want to go through life without Him. I’m Thankful to see that there are so many good Christian people that comment and support you. I pray for those who don’t know God, that He is revealed to them through your journey. Keep being Awesome MB and LB. Glad you were able to get off and escape the storms. Those 6 miles you didn’t get in that day are really easily made up. That only translates to 2.5 to 3 hours total. So be encouraged when these things happen because there’s always the rainbow on the other side 😊

The man was a hermit who died alone in his cabin in 1923.
That date you saw, 5-19-22, is just when they repaired it.
His cabin was there at the monument. You’re welcome.

You can control the weather! Put on your rain gear and it will be dry…put on your puffy and it will be warm…put on your fleece and it will rain…simple! Haha…thank you for your efforts!

Phew, what a relief you must have felt reaching the pickup point. God will provide so thank you for paying attention to the signs. All too often we ask for the Lords help but miss the signs leading us to the answer. So glad you’re both safe.

Thank you for showing the trail as you see it. You can ask me and a 100 successful thru hikers a question and get 101 different answers. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks, it is your hike. The true meaning of HYOH. I don’t understand why anyone would comment negatively about what you do or decide. I challenge them to vlog there day and see how everyone acts about the decisions in there life. As for unplanned days, some of mine on trail turned out to be a blessing and great days. Keep sharing your thoughts and ignore or block the haters. I also believe in the right place and right time but who knows maybe it’s all chance but I don’t care because it works for me. Those AT maps are SO intimidating! Seeing what you've hiked and then looking up and up and up. I think I'd have to give up! Don't be like me.
Lord, you placed mama and baby bear on this trail and you know their heart to complete this hike. We know they can trust the steadfastness of your hand and the faithfulness of your leadership. Cover their every step, lead their every movement, remind them that you slept during the storm and were never troubled by their movement or noise at all. Silence every fear mama bear is feeling for herself and her child. Set your angels around them to protect them and may they daily renew their minds in your words of truth and love. In Jesus name amen

Hey, I totally get it. Right now. It looks like you're sitting in a nice pretty field with a rainbow and your little cabin. And when you were hiking in the rain it's not such a big deal. But in the night.... When that wind is howling and those trees are bending and it's dark and you can't see what's coming and that radar shows us big, red and purple blotches.... You are safe. Four walls, a roof and nothing leaks. Embrace it and just take a little further the next day. It makes a world of difference and not only your sleep but your nerves. I know what it's like to sleep in a windy, rainy stormy woods with trees that are over 100 years old and can kill you with one drop. You got this! And like you said, God wanted you to be right there right now.

The storms are part of the experience. You can hunker down on trail in a shelter and be perfectly safe. Lots of the shelters also have clear tenting areas without any trees that can come down on your tent. Tornados would be something to worry about. Thunderstorms not so much. In the same column with a fear of bears. The social experience on trail with a bunch of hikers crammed into a shelter is a great source of stories too.
I suppose being from a flat state like Florida you have a different perspective on storms, as there’s no terrain features to really block or slow the wind down. In the mountains, as long as you’re not on an exposed ridge or peak, the storms are never as bad as they look on the radar.
Glad you guys are staying safe in your own way, just saying staying on trail is also a perfectly safe option.

As always I will comment about five minutes into the video ;) One parent to another, you are doing the right thing. There is a difference between keeping your kids in the dark or lying to them, and telling them the truth but letting them know you have everything in hand, even if it might be, shall we say, a forward-looking statement. That's leadership, and it's what kids need most from us as adults.
Also, good for you for having the discipline to avoid "get-there-itis." You're close to a big destination and it must be tempting to tell yourself the weather isn't that bad, you can find cover if you need to, etc. And extremely frustrating to accept potentially a long delay when you're so close. But you didn't let that get to you. If you're like a lot of people who make smart decisions under pressure, you might not realize how impressive it is, but I'm here to tell you!

Nice work!! That storm caused damage in some areas. Bigger than golf ball size hail in Morristown. Glad it worked out good for you to get off trail. After that front moved through the weather was fantastic.

That shady valley area is so beautiful. Like a garden of Eden placed in between two big mountain ranges. I grew up in church in kingsport,th with the Long family. Their father was Kelly Long, He grew up in that shady valley area on a big farm.

Im not a fan of camping in our trailer during storms and Im sure I would of been up all night too hearing of bad weather reports and then wind. Being in a trailer you also worry about trees, but a tent would give me panic attacks. I looked up that monument you passed, and there's interesting articals of the man buried there.
It stinks that the weather is messing with your plans, but you're doing what you have to to keep safe.
So glad you guys were able to get a cabin and be in safety.

One day at a time sweet Jesus ❤️ that’s what I always tell myself. Sometimes it seems that the good Lord is telling us that it’s in his time not ours. What a blessing to be able to have shelter and that beautiful cabin I am so excited to go to trail days for my first time ever! I am rolling in there on Friday. I am going to be walking all over town looking for you guys not to be some weird stalker! Just so I can at least wave to you and say hi! I have been following several hikers this year including Heather and Chuck Julia’s time out and transcending traipsing. I am learning so much from all of you. It is so fun to see all of the wonderful things that you see out there on that beautiful trail. I am praying that the weather isn’t too wet over the weekend, but whatever God gives us we are going to make the best of it, it’s like when I go to Disney World and I say to myself a rainy day at Disney is so much better than a good day at work💕 🥾🏕️🌲🌳

I’m sorry to say, but we’ve decided to skip trail days this year. LB and I both agree that we don’t want to give up our zeroes (we would need to take at least 3) and not be able to actually rest. Trail Days wouldn’t be a time where either of us could rest and recover, and we would rather save those zeroes for when our family is eventually able to visit again. We are talking about going next year though and making a family trip out of it. 😊

Have you tried strapping your wet rain fly on top of your pack for better weight distribution? Would probably work as long as you have a stuff sack for it or could roll it up in a way it doesn't unroll when up there.
Yeah, I just recently started doing that. It actually does help a lot. Thank you! A few days ago, it got saturated with rain and I swear 10lbs of mud, so I just stuffed it into the stuff sack and put it into the pack, lol! I figured the mess would be worth cleaning up to save my back and shoulders. 😂
You have some of the easiest miles in the entire AT ahead of you into Damascus…so you two can make up miles if you need to. Happy Hiking!!!

My son is currently building his business and not in a season where he can take 6 months off. My other 2 daughters love the outdoors, hiking, camping, but didn’t want to do 6 months and 2,200 miles. Little Bear has wanted to do this for a few years now. 😊
