UK gov pledges almost £22 billion to carbon capture

  • The government has pledged almost £22 billion over the next 25 years for carbon capture and storage technology.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
The funds will go towards projects in Teeside and Merseyside - which ministers said would provide vital new jobs and investment as well as help the UK to meet its climate goals.
But some critics say the highly expensive technology could lock the country into "second rate solutions" - when greener alternatives might exist.

Yes, but not everybody are like your parents. If you are just a few pounds over the threshold you lose the whole £300! Many many pensioners will either go without heat or eating this Winter season. That is tens, if not hundreds of thousands! Even if pensioners spend the allowance on other things, because they are reasonably well off, the government gets 20% back in VAT immediately, also the rest goes to keep businesses running who pay lots of tax! So in reality the money just goes round in a circle back to the government. There are £millions not claimed by those who could, the government acknowledge that, so that could go towards keeping pensioners warm this Winter.

What happened to renewable energy and energy security ? Carbon capture systems are not renewable, not sustainable and are unproven technology on a large scale. Furthermore they may also increase pollution form other means since the chemicals used to scrub the gases will need to be disposed of when degraded. A gas fired power station using carbon capture uses more gas than one without since you require additional energy to process and transport the flue gases and hence make any electricity generated more expensive. What happened to making electricity prices cheaper ? What happened to lowering our reliance on imported hydrocarbons ? Carbon capture will never remove all the CO2 either - maybe 90% so not carbon neutral also. Someone has been reading too many "reports" circulated by big oil.
I guess the next big idea will be the hydrogen superhighway that the big oil companies have been promoting in the EU. Just convert natural gas to hydrogen. Job done ! I thought the gov climate change committee were technologically savvy but it sound like gullible fools. Mr Milliband ought to explain himself.
