Absolutely the best death metal drummer to come from the original Floridian masters, he's so overlooked, he is single handedly responsible for the development of death metal drumming, and song writing, he was writing most of the rythum guitar parts on legion and most albums there after, when legion came out every death metal musician was blown away by his technical abilities and his superior double bass playing,if it wasn't for Steve ashiem death metal drumming wouldn't be where it is today.

Love Steve"s bomb blast but no drummer in the 80's came close to Pete "commando" Sandoval with his one foot blast and speed. Terrorizer and Morbid Angel were lucky to have Pete in their debut albums.

Check out his drumming on Order Of Ennead and the deicide albums from Stench Of Redemption onward. His drumming (especially on Order of Ennead) had a much more technical approach and lots of different blast beat variations. So what I said about the "primal feel" is just the tip of the iceberg. Anyways, just a little thought I had on Steve's drumming. Still continue to amazes me

His right hand is move so fast and when you have his age it is fantastic. When drummer want to rest or if he is out of condition he move his right hand slow. Hoglan, Lombardo, Sandoval, Bostaph, Doc, Harrison, and of course STEVE ASHEIM were/are just an example of some of the great innovators/pioneers of Extreme Drumming (that were my personal inspirations) with Steve and DEICIDE in my TOP 3 next to SLAYER and the mighty MORBID ANGEL. Steve HAS ta be non- human as well, as there just ISN'T any stopping point ahead it seems and he JUST KEEPS killin it LIVE. Plus? Steve Asheim IS a super cool guy. Those power Tom's on his new kit sound absolutely fkn awesome, people knock d drum and talk shit about them, but they have had some of the biggest and best thrash metal and death metal drummers endorse them,even Dave Lombardo played them for about two years,on the world painted blood tour. Paul from cannibal corpse plays d,drums, and the monster known as Vinnie Paul had a signature kit and hardware line with them, d drum are just as good as the rest of the main manufacturers, the only drum company that is leagues above the rest is the , British drum company, but you need a mortgage to afford them.
After hearing the first deicide lp i decided to stick to 2 turntables and techno. 😂 i cannot understand this drummer's stamina and creativity. He is my fav.
