You wondered why people jumper from F to D terminal. This is for a generator with an internally earthed field. For an externally earthed field connect jumper from F terminal to the ground of the generator.
I remember ' flashing ' power to the armature connection on a generator in a car to help ' polarize ' it and seeing it attempting to move. If you did it with the belt off it would spin.

Yes it will but the ground/ body of generator should be connected to positive then
