@@AMJProductions what is the best riser pad size for an old school skateboard?
Half inch for loose trucks and maybe you could get away with 1/4 risers if you have tighter trucks but if you have 60mm and over wheels then you need half inch no matter what
I met Steve Caballero back in the late 80s in the UK on tour. He sold me his black Bones t-shirt which he was wearing for the event. Great guy.
What a completely gorgeous build. It’s so great to see the appreciation for the roots of the skateboarding revolution golden age. I’m 47 and making a similar build right now myself. Good on the dad for passing this OG appreciation to his son.

I have the original release version of this board here at home. Mine is the yellow with red batman wings with a set of tracker trucks and cross-bone wheels. It was my last board and I am so glad I kept it since they now are reissuing them as "classic" decks, but mine is an original. I LOVE the colour scheme. Makes me want to get an identical one.
Yo it just matched in so many different ways, the white rails and wheels, to the blue coloring on the wheels with the red bearings and trucks, just such a well thought out insanely good looking board! Extremely jealous!!

Honestly the dark red reaper logo with cadet blue 3 dip painted deck and white wheels and rails all of that just matches really well.

I stopped when my daughter was born. Now she is 12 and i bought myself a complete new setup around 6 months ago. Having so much fun again

Do it! I got my daughter a penny board when she was 6 and was like wait let me see that. And now a year later after not skating for 13 years I got a collection lol. Its nice having a job and getting back into skating!

The 80's decks look way better! I got my first Powell Peralta in 1985. I stopped skating the end of 1989. I want to get back on it but I'm will be 46 yrs old in September.

Don't worry about age. I'm close to 50 and started up again. Just know your limitations that's all. I started up again in March. I've just been doing flatland. So far so good. Just be careful. Don't need to end up in the ER during a pandemic.

So rad! So true,I didnt get a Rob Robskob board because my body got one, so went with a Tommy Guerrero, black flame deck, with Blue Rat bones wheels with indy trucks. Getting another one soon! That was in 1986 or so.

I just bought a rob roskopp face reissue for a cruiser. I always wanted one as a kid, but didn’t get a good pro model till I was 14 (1991). Before that it was variflex. Needless to say, I didn’t really start skateboarding till 1991.
Brings back good memories - remember getting a skate shop in San Francisco in 1985 to make me a board made up of a pink-red Powell Peralta Lance Mountain deck with Indies, lime green 90a cross bones and PP rails, jaw and tail bones. I worked about 3 newspaper delivery jobs for ages to pay for that thing and it weighed a ton, but I had great fun on it. I gave it to a kid when I was 19 and moved away, kind of regret doing that now, but glad he got some fun out it.

I loved the Lance Mountain board...I had the Tony Hawk, baby blue with Trackers, Rat Bones wheels, Swiss bearings and Ugly Stixx.
Made me remember my first skateboard. Black & purple with green rails, tip and tail guards.
I can remember it was a "Land Shark" of some late 80s early 90s vintage.

First of all, that board is BEAUTIFUL... love it since I skated in the late 80's and early 90's. My first board I ever owned was the Jeff Kendall (Santa Cruz) and then moved over to Powell Peralta and got the infamous Mike McGill. Love watching this video!!!

Being like 13 year's old I fallowed the Bones Brigade hype, but always like the function of my Santa Cruz stuff better, till I got Tony Mag alien deck. I felt like I could Ollie over a house on that thing!
You need to do one with neon green gullwing trucks and slimeball wheels. That was the rad shit in late 80's Massachusetts
These boards are just so sick. I want one so bad but they are always sold out.. I went with a Real 8.25. But once I see one available I am getting one of these.

I've been wanting to get an old school reissue....I learned on a bod Boyle double dragon Santa Cruz board back in the day...loving that cabby tho...
0:09 That is the EXACT boombox I had in the Army when I was stationed at Fort Benning, Ga. in 1980! Great sound for what was back then a "smaller" sized boombox. Some of those things could measure 3 feet by 2 feet, I've seen 'em! lol This video is almost like watching me set up my 10x33 old school plank board a while back. I went with Indy 215s and blue 60mm Powell Rat Bones but seriously, this guy does NOT need 1/2" risers with 60mm wheels. 70mm for sure but everyone who rides 60mm wheels uses a 1/4" riser with no wheel bite problems.

My first board was also a Vision Jinx in 86. It was my friend's board, but he got sick of me riding it everyday. So he got a new board and I got the Jinx.

Nice deck, was one of my favs back in the day for sure and have a new one still wrapped sitting with a my other fav, a Ray Barbee ragdoll. I personally prefer to have the rails follow the shape of the board, aesthetically looks better.
Agree about the rails following the shape of the board. I always find it strange when I see Santa Cruz fishtail decks with straight rails rather than curved.
Matt should have gone with 159's on that width deck so wheels werent sticking out past edge..
But hey, everyones different..at least this guy wanted to go old school... hope he liked it! cool vid

My (as shop bought by me at the time ) late 1980 Chris Strople 32 inch by 11 Caster with wide orig. Gullwings, has orig. Green Krypto Wheels that stick out a bit on the nose curve but are flush at the tail. My Concrete halfpipe AND freestyle board for a while! Also quite good for downhill. Back then a DHD Power Pivot was installed as a skid plate.( rails and nose guards became standard a bit later). No concave in the deck at all. Suited my tall frame.

Yea man I totally agree. I always like to see people being different with their setups. I remember the Sims Staab boards very well. My personal favorite was the pirate deck. Which one did you have? Had the McGill when they first came out with the bonite! That was some enjoyable hype, lol!
I used to collect my snapped decks on my wall, can't remember if I ever broke that one. If I had deck with a bad crack in it, and enough money for a new one it was definitely going to be a launch ramp day.

I loved this for it was so awesome so wicked I want to board just like that it's amazing board with one of my favourite types of boards and stuff it came out so cool I used to skateboard all through the eighties and part of the nineties and stuff I have a mad Hensley H street and a alpha board back in the day I would love to get aboard like that it is sweet and awesome
Yea dude that is awesome. Thanks for watching the video my son and I super appreciate it! I grew up skating in the same time frame, great times. Certain skateboard parts can be tough to come by right now cause of covid. Also, the Powell Peralta Bones Brigade decks re-issue "generally" the fall of each year, but the graphics and colorways change year to year. Skate One is the distribution site for anything Powell/Bones Brigade related or check your local shop, some get the boards others don't.
I agree that is an awesome looking board. The aesthetics are beautiful - both the shape and the graphics. Though I would have preferred to have the Powell Peralta dragon logo on the top like they had back in the 80s. I had two Powell Peralta boards myself which I rode in the 80s for street and ramp. One of them was autographed by Tony Hawk and Steve Cabellero. But both were stolen from my home.

Which Powell Peralta boards did you have that you are referring to. Sucks that the boards were stolen man, that is terrible. The nostalgia and the memories alone are enough, but in addition to that, I'm sure they would be worth a descent amount of money as well!
Oh yea crazy when I noticed sellers charging huge amounts of money for the 80s PP boards on ebay. And I'm interested in getting into skateboarding again so it would have been great to use these boards again but alas I can't. So I'll be forced to buy a new board - most likely a PP reissue like this Cab street deck. After all, I'm used to 80s decks and 80s tricks. The first Powell Peralta deck I got was the skull ripper which had the white background colour and red dragon logo on top. The weird thing is I can't remember what my second PP deck was. My memory is mostly blank on that one. That's really odd for me cos I'm someone who's really drawn to skateboard graphics. All I remember is that it had a black background colour with a golden dragon logo on top. I do recall riding down the footpath on that board and looking down and admiring that dragon logo while thinking: "Wow, that looks so cool."
By the way, great job on the circular cutout for the grip tape around the logo. Yes, I remember that circular shape well on those boards back in the day.
I wish I would have kept my boards from my past, not for monetary value but the memories. At least I'm still capable of remembering them, lol! There was nothing like the feeling of skating back then. The boards were amazing, the mentality was still pure, it was great. My first pro deck, as said in the video *i think*, was a Vision Jinx. I was kind of bummed cause the graphic I received was not the one I ordered. I ordered the Jinx and it was the cartoonish bat on the bottom. The board I got I'm pretty sure was the second rendition of that graphic and it was nothing like the first. I was still happy none the less. Funny how those memories never fade. I remember taking it outside and doing a little grind on the side of the driveway, scuffing up the truck slightly.
I'm not trying to solicit anything on my part but if you would choose to get a re-issue setup I would love to make that happen for you. However, if you have a shop near you I always advocate supporting what's local to you.

@@AMJProductions Sorry for the late reply. Back in the 80s, I was learning wall rides with one of my Powell Peralta boards (skating a half pipe ramp really helped with that.) Oh yea I would really like you to set up a board for me but alas I live on the other side of the world in Australia. I was really set on getting a fishtail shaped board as that's what I rode in the 80s. Though at the same time, I also wanted to get a complete board for convenience and be able to ride it right away. Though I noticed that all the modern complete boards that have fishtails have fairly short wheel bases and that didn't really suit me. So I ended up getting a Globe popsical with a decently long wheel base.
One day though, it would be great to get a fishtail shaped deck (either a PP reissue or a modern fishtail.) Out of curiosity, would you know of any modern fishtail decks that have reasonably long wheel bases?

@@AMJProductions its a 10" Powell Peralta with the skull and snake reissue. Got some Creature rails and green Bones 64mm with the same .50 Mimi Logo risers. I just hope when i get the grip i can cut it old school style like you guys did.

I still skate an OG McGill, with the ‘boneite’ in it. I was a vert skater in the late 80’s and even had a local sponsor. Now as a 44 year old I am at it again with my son on his popsicle deck lol

@@AMJProductions Just noticed the Rodney Mullen board at the beginning. Nice also. And the flip trick. Looks like Independent T hanger trucks, with a 6 hole pattern. I'm surprised they did the 6 hole pattern for freestyle trucks.

Super late on this video but this is one of my decks of all the time. I wish the blue wasn’t so rare. I’ve watched this video like 3 times trying to figure out of this cab deck should be my first street deck

@@AMJProductions quick question why did y’all go with 1/2 inch risers instead of 1/4 for the 60 mm rat bones?
It was just personal preference for Matt. There's a few factors but one is depending on how loose someone rides there trucks could influence the riser size to help eliminate wheel bite. Some might want a larger riser so that the angle of the board is more inclined when popping ollies. Risers tend to be relatively inexpensive so what I suggest is, maybe buy both and test it out yourself. That's what I did on my Vision Gonzales build and If I remember right I think Matt ended up testing 1/4 risers too.
@@AMJProductions time period preference, the 1/2 inch risers would have been more appropriate. I’d say they’re great cuz you can always throw on some g bones or other bigger wheels. Gets you use to it and gives you more versatility. 1/2inch risers were big I. The 80s
I’ve just setup a 10” beach bummer deck with Indy 215s and 56mm 101a pigs but would love to setup this 80s style one, maybe I should’ve got 169s

First pro deck was a used Rob Roskop 1, with all my veraflex stuff mounted on it. I think even had to drill holes for the trucks, lol.
Dude that was a classic as well. A good majority of the 80s graphics just had something special about them. My first pro was a Vision Jinx, ordered from ccs mail order catalog. Got it for christmas, when I opened it, it wasn't the board that was in the catalog, it was a different jinx graphic. I was bummed in a way but still psyched. Recently, I ordered the re-issue of the Jinx. Maybe we will do a setup of it at some point. I had tracker trucks, slimeball wheels.
@@AMJProductions my favorite deck I had was Tony Magnuson Alien, but I always thought that graphic was lame as $#!+, Except for the logo on top was great.
i like 60mm wheels because thats as high as you can really go without over tightening your trucks or stacking up riser pads. but i do want to try g bones out.
I heard from another youtube video that there are a number of Powell Peralta reissue decks that are warped. Awesome looking decks overall but this sounds like a serious issue.

Glafkos Obion g slides would be the best in 59 for just cruising or 56 for street - street skating.
I had da x-zact same 1 no rails silver Indies 4-got da wheel s prolly kryptos felt to locked in doe so I traided it like popsicle sticks but a real looker an quality to gotta love Powell cab line best color scheme I think
What about half cabs Caballero s shoeline not my first choice but good surf style and ankle support as well as balance of weight and support (ninjaboot) or mega van

Sick set up... r those indys old school bolt pattern? Are they double drilled? Looking for 169 indy hollows with old bolt pattern and or double drilled bolt pattern...all the one's i've seen r the new bolt pattern and aren't double drilled. Looking for lighter trucks for a Steve Caballero ban this reissue.

Great video, man. My local shop that I went to as a kid had this deck in stock. Just one. Was thinking about buying it, watching this video sealed the deal for me. I've since watched this video several times to help me figure out how to set it up. Want to keep it light as possible. I had a tough time choosing between these same trucks, but 149s and 159s. I just ordered some 159s today. Gonna go with some OJs. Either super juice, or hot juice. 60mm 78a. This board is strictly for commuting these gritty NYC streets. Gonna try to throw an orange tail bone on there. (Toughest part of the job, when you lack the tools). Hopefully I can get the grip cut out nice like y'all did. This video helped me out a lot. One question... Will the combo of 159s and big wheels be sticking out too much? I've honestly never rode a deck in that style before. What are the advantages/disadvantages? Can I adapt? Dude, super humbled by all of that. We appreciate you watching the video, hopefully inspiring you, and the kind words. Trucks are difficult to size, cause it's personal preference on how people like their board to feel. The 169s that we chose were based on what the customer and I felt were the best option for him. I don't think you made a wrong decision on the 159s, the 149s might have been a smidge small though, in my opinion. I don't think the 159s are going to stick out, maybe not at all. My customers 169s did but slightly.
The choice of wheels sounds great. Big soft wheels will feel like you're floating. New York streets are crazy, we visited Manhattan last year. The people skating in the thick of traffic was gnarly. The tail bone shouldn't be too bad, ours was simply a phillips screwdriver. Unless you get a tail bone that uses sex bolts and you need to drill through the board. And the grip was just finding a bowl or something circular that matches an oval that you're happy with.
Advantages to me, are that the board is super smooth, such a great feel, and fast! What bearings are you going with? And risers? Possible disadvantage is that boards like this tend to be a little heavier and depending on what you rode before, might be a little higher off the ground with a 1/4 or 1/2 riser. @@AMJProductions Thanks for taking the time to respond! Got back into skating 2 years ago after a 20 year hiatus, when I took my son to the skate shop I went to as a kid. Was surprised to see that the dude who ran the shop was the son of the owner from.back in the day. After he put together a custom for my boy, I wanted to experience riding through the streets of Queens with him, but didn't like the popsicle style board. Had the shop owner order me a Santa Cruz SMA Mike Conroy reissue. I'm currently riding Bones ATF 59mm 80a wheels on that and honestly it's so smooth and fast it's hard to handle at times! I've been collecting old school boards ever since. I even copped the Marty McFly Valterra/Madrid deck from Back To The Future. I copped 62mm 90a Madrid Fly Wheels, but I haven't assembled it yet. Going to wait till next Spring for that. After further review, I think I'm actually going to go with the same wheels from the set up in this video. I hate feeling like I'm biting someone else style, especially since I seen I set up on Instagram that's EXACTLY like this one, minus the rib bones. So this vid has definitely influenced folks. I prefer softer wheels, but it just feels like those rat bones were made for this deck. SO, I think I'll go with a different grip set up. Maybe a slasher style, custom grip job. And no rib bones. I want to throw a skid plate on the tail, that's what I mentioned earlier when I spoke about the lack of tools. No drill or vice grips. I'll see what I can do. Listen, from being a father who skates, watches old school cartoons and plays video games with his sons; to appreciating a family run local skate shop... Just want to say keep doing what you're doing. There's dudes out here from all over, from all different walks of life who can appreciate and relate to what you got going on. 💪🤘
Here I am in 2020 watching this video every day for the last few days, wishing for this exact board and setup, 2 years too late. I did manage to snag a Lime Green Caballero reissue, but no red Indies or Rat Bones to be found anywhere right now. Anyway great video, you guys should do more of this kind of thing. Yea the pandemic has put a hurt on the skateboard industry in terms of product, it's tough to find quite a bit of stuff. We do plan to do more set up videos in the future. @@bryon_with_a_oh Hey, since I use this board for cruising and wanted it to sit a little lower I put 56mm Bones Rough Riders. I have some G-bones on one of my other boards with bigger risers, they are awesome too though a little hard unless I'm on smooth concrete. The Rough Riders are really squishy though I wouldn't recommend them for anything other than cruising.
One thing I really miss is Cross bone wheels I loved them
You can actually still get a set NOS on eBay if you're willing to pay the crazy price for them. Though, it truly would be awesome if they did reissues of all the wheels from back then, or at least something to replace it properly.
I no I bought a pair when I got them they were terrible rid off really what beautiful wheels they were I've got a lot of original stuff from the 80es but can't get a great pair cross bones my favourite wheels of all time to be honest

I just bought a Santa Cruz board that is 9.35 x 31.7 and I want to know if these trucks and wheels will fix correct on it. Ok the trucks are Independent Stage 11 169 Forged Titanium and the wheels are Oj's Elites Hardline 99a. I'm deciding on the size and do you think a 55 or 56mm will fit correct?
I want a wheel that is a medium size so not to big and not to small and I want something with speed and and good sliding but still maintain a smooth ride on the rough streets. I'm more of a old school skater in doing tricks from the 80's so this new stuff kinda throws me off when it comes to sizes and stuff.
Thanks for the question! I'm personally going to go off of this setup in the video when answering some of your questions since it seems that you are looking to do something similar. A lot of this is going to be personal preference as well, so most of what I'm gonna say is my opinion and could be different for others.
Starting with the trucks, you are looking at the same size that we put on Matt's board. With the 9.625" deck they almost fit perfectly with the widest most portion of the deck, making it stand straight up in primo/rail. These trucks will probably stick out from the deck, which is fine though if you want something more flush with the width then you may want something a little bit smaller. We are talking about almost an 1/8 of an inch on each side though, so you may just find you don't want to worry about that.
The wheels are also a big personal preference thing when considering size and durometer. I personally rode 55mm on my modern street deck for the longest time, and have switched to a little bit smaller just out of curiosity. Most of these bigger old school decks might favor something a bit bigger then what you were initially thinking. I would consider something like a 60mm wheel. If you are looking for something with a comfortable speed, something where you can push and cruise then I think that will be your best bet. If you want a smooth ride with a good slide, then something around the 90a range would be nice. Most modern street wheels start at 99a and if you are going to be on rough asphalt streets you may want to consider something less high. I know that what I just described in a wheel is the same thing on Matt's board, but to be honest that's probably a good choice for what it sounds like you want. If you want an OJ wheel to match with the Santa Cruz brand then maybe look into the OJ II 60mm 95a.
I hope this helps you in your decision, and again this is only my personal preference on what I feel you are looking for so you may want to look at some more options if you are still feeling cautious. Happy Skating!
I just got this deck in green and realized it has the old school bolt patterns and I wanted to try something other than Indy but I guess I have to get them again 😂💀 not sure if 159 or 169 is the way to go, it is pretty thin where the trucks will go about 8 inches
Those 169s look too wide to me. You’d think by the numbers it’d be right, but the 159s actually fit better, imo.

I think the 169s were a perfectly fine choice from an aesthetic and functional approach. 159s would have worked sure, but are designed to fit 8.6-9.0" (according to independents truck fitting chart on their website) widths. So, "maybe" fitting the the back truck better in terms of width, they would have been theoretically to narrow for the front truck "maybe", seeing as how the board measures 9.625" at the widest point which is from the center to the upper-most region of the board.
However, however...there are no rules in how to set up a board in skateboarding, just a recommendation "maybe". Narrow trucks will produce a tighter turn radius while the wider will make it slower. Both are fun in their own right. So do what you want. If you want 159s on that board, do it. If you want 215s, do it. If you want 109s, I wouldn't recommend it, but if that's what you want...do it! It's only wrong when you think your decision is right and others are wrong, in my opinion.
It is possible that I am wrong, but probably not "maybe".

dude im looking for an old school skate (not a cruiser?) I want to skate but im 31 and im not really interested in nothing more than ollies, manuals and ride bowls, im tall , with 85 kg and have big feets, so maybe something like this is better option than a regular 2019 skate right? is harder or easiest to ride?
It does not matter what shape a skateboard is I’m 13 5.4 and 130 pounds I ride one of these old school boards and I’m so used to them they feel normal to me so you would feel fine on one of these it would take some getting used to though
Really good video if you like me prefer the height of the original old school indies you can put an extra 1/4 inch riser on the half inch riser or if available you still by original old school non reisue trucks mainly Gullwing or Tracker trucks there are not that original old school stage 5 or stage 6 indies anymore or at least not unused although you can see what is available on sites like eBay or Amazon etc
In addition if you use old school trucks and the board has newer school drill hoe pattern you can redrill the board if you you ask around for a spare second hand 6 hole drill pattern base plates (there are still a few around) put the base plate on the board and fix on with bolts and get a 7/32s inch drill bit (about 5.5mm In Earope and Sometimes even in the UK although both metric and imperial size drill bits etc are available etc in UK although most people use metric now however some industrial wholesalers and some hardware stores and bolt suppliers etc will supply both if requested etc

I had a Tony Hawk board, same style as this one. mine had the hawk skull on the bottom blue grip tape one black truck and the other blue blue rails and blue and black rat bone wheels. I wish I still had it but it got stolen. then I found it like two weeks later all shacked and ruined. I was heart broken. it was my very first hawk board. I had no choice but to trash it.
That setup sounds super cool, sad to hear that it was stolen and then ruined as well. You could always do a reissue build. My dad's actually in the process of building his first board as a kid, a Vision Jinx/Tracker Trucks/Slime Ball Wheels. Should be really cool!

Will Indy 159 Trucks be better for this setup instead of the Indy 169s?

@@AMJProductions i appreciate the reply i recently got a 10 X 30” Powell Cab Chinese dragon deck and i noticed that it measured at the top bolts around 9 inches and the bottom bolts 8 inches. I have some 169s laying around and noticed the axles pop out a lot more than what im used to on my popsicle set up. My local shop had some 159s so im on the loop of trying to get the right setup. Im strictly going to use this board for cruising. Would you say 159s are better than the 169s i have? Thanks for the reply i appreciate it.

A tiny bit of gorilla glue or even shoe goo on the back of the rails before you screw them down keeps the rattle away when riding. Well worth it. I’d way prefer 159s on that one too.
