I remember back in the late 70s there was a gas station across from my grammar school.there was a guy that would pull in with a silver beat up gto and do a burn out the car was jacked up with cragers in the back and moon hubcap wheels in the front. i thaught that car was the coolest.slowly the guy would fix it up he red oxide primed it.and one day it was candy apple red.i fell in love with gto cause of that car and that guy.peace...
As far as getting in there to weld that piece, on my chevelle that piece was separated from the quarter and welded prior to setting the quarter. Set the quarter and weld the left side to the quarter after with couple of plud welds. Right behind the weatherstripping channel. Hope this helps.
Great video! Currently working on a 69 Charger that has a lot of prior damager and 3/4 thick filler hinding major damage. Good thing we have another charger to get measurements off of. Keep up the good videos!
Love the methods you use to get you reference measurements so you can jump in and cutaway. This car was definitely “misjudged” as to how to put that quarter on by someone. You’ll get it dialed back in I’m sure. Great video.
Fantastic! Finally doing something other than birds. You have been patiently watching and waiting for this. Happy to repay your dedication to the channel.
@rajcam80 I know you appreciate the birds too but let’s be honest as much as it pains me to say it. The gto much more popular car. I will never sell my birds for a GTO but I would trade the judge for a 1969 trans am in equal condition 😁
"Justice Steele", as in 'just-is steel'. "Steel Justice", (or Iron Justice, Metal Justice, etc) I definitely would've cut it inside the factory seams, as you did, especially since that quarter was installed so poorly! My sheet metal guy uses an air hammer with a ripper, way inside the lines, and says he can rough-rip a quarter off in 10 minutes. Great work on your part!
I use the heck out of my air hammer to pop panels apart. I will also say that the ABody cars have much better spot welds compared to Fbody cars the fbody I can pop most of the factory spot welds with one or two hits on an air hammer.
I think, if it were me, I'd probably get a new piece of sheet metal for the outer wheel well and at the very least replace what you can easily get to. Without the air hammer and spot weld drill bit it is probably a no go for the whole outer wheel well, but I think you are gonna have a far easier time replacing the outer half than try to repair it on the car. My 2 cents, your mileage may vary.
i gave you an offer on my car before, its nothing special, keeps sitting for years at a time, need a alot of help because i cant get it running right, its a 78 catalina, just replaced the carb and cant figure it out, idles high on first start then like crap or the other way around, any advice?
Carburetors are sensitive to engine mechanical issues. Basically if the engine has compression, valve, vacuum leak, or damaged camshaft and so on. Even a perfectly rebuilt or new carb isn’t going to be work well or be able to maintain a nice idle or drivability. I would start with a good visual inspection, vacuum lines missing or leaking, then maybe a compression test. While doing a compression test “read” the spark plugs, are they wet, oily, burnt. They all should look about the same. If one doesn’t inspect that cylinder first. Basically get a good reading on the engine mechanicals first. Then if that is good maybe it’s a carb issue
Looking forward to following this journey as you always give it everything you have. You could call it Court Date or maybe The Verdict?? Good luck on the name!
Call it the Laugh-in Judge or Da Judge since the car was named after this character on the comedy show Laugh in. Here comes da Judge was Sammy Davis Jr
I have a few thoughts on a name: Judgment Day, The Gavel, The Reckoning, Final Sentence, The Last Judgment, Lawbreaker, The Lawbringer and finally I have Instant Justice. Hope any of those help. Can’t wait to see the the build!
Must have been common practice back in the day to just overlay the replacement quarter over the top of original sheet metal in the door jambs. My 68 Camaro has the same issue on the passenger quarter. Will be replaced next year.
I agree old school method for sure plus the hole and slide hammer dent repair method. If you can call it repair. I am grateful for my migwelder and body hammers that is for sure
Oh the dreaded brass brazing it works, but what a mess when it comes time to fix them right. I cringe every time at work when I see braze globbed on like that knowing all the tedious grinding ahead to get it cleaned up. On the brace could hide a few plug welds nicely behind the weather striping to attach it to the quarter.
I worked on a 64 corvair years ago and it was loaded with brazed seams and patches it took me forever to get it cleaned up and patched back together. Ever since that car I loath brazed parts
Youre an awesome guy.... you really are down to earth...from using your own methods you seem to do best work... like the cleaning of the underquarter steel..... get it cleaned treated done and move on.... ..... How about ( Judge Dredd)...
You are correct in assuming it’s not level. You need to check it first. I have a 8’ level I used on past projects to test the floor. It’s all within 1/8” for the most part. The other option is if the floor isn’t level, start by leveling the car frame to the horizon then use the 8’ level after it’s shimmed as needed to get it level with horizon then measure up from the edge of the level. I did a video on this on a previous build
My guess when the roof skin was off .The factory got the spot welder down that brace and hit the quarter or one of the holes in the brace . Monday and Friday cars had 3/8 to 1/2 gaps and Tuesday to Thursday cars had 1/8 to 1/4 gap.factory .
Yes it will. You are spot on and thanks for pointing it out. What I didnt show was the body seam across the rear of the car when checked side to side it was less then 1/8” difference. Being the frame is level and original body parts are level feeling good about it.
It’s a support for the sheet metal of the 1/4 panel. What you see is a foam like substance attached to the bracket that keeps slight pressure on the panel.
If the inner and outer wheel well was to come off for a repair in the area ....would the rear quarter support area ....would it have enough access to weld and then install the inner and outer wheel well...?????....late thought...🔧🔧🍞
Not that it matters much (especially now that you cut it off), but that poorly-fitted 1/4 that you cut off kinda looks like it was a convertible skin, given the shape of it at the C-pillar/sailpanel area, which might explain why they didn't go higher with it and maybe affected fitment some since some of the body lines are different between hardtops and ragtops.
My guess is this was at least done 30 years ago or so. So at that time it was probably one of the best options to get the car look better. If I think of it that way and it kept the car from the crusher back then it isn’t all that bad.
@@VinylVillageGarage John, I watched every episode of The Great Pumpkin and also Project Mockingbird, I will be enjoying all of the Judge videos. Your videos make me want to work more on my own car. Thank you!
@TijuanaBiblieMike wow. You just made my day. My goal is to save as many cars as possible even if I don’t physically touch but even just inspire or motivate someone to do it is fantastic news! You can do it!

Great story, it’s amazing what stirs or influences us the fall in love with cars
Probably around the same time there was a mechanic who had a 1969 Green GTO who let his pitbull ride in the back seat
@@javierdenardo2607 That’s one lucky dog
If it wasn't for guys like you these classic relics would be crushed.
Appreciate that, I like to save the ones most say can’t be done. I hate to see a classic get left behind or crushed
Thanks for the ring side seat! Learn something on each episode.
Glad to hear it!
Great lunch time content...and thanks for the tips.....🔧🔧👍

Yup 😎
Sparks are flying 😊
It’s on now for sure

That's a great point! I appreciate the feedback and am always learning and that’s what was seeing as the answer. This definitely helps thanks
Good video. Please put the guard on that cutoff wheel. I've had them explode. I also use a full face shield and gloves.
Yeah I have pressed my luck for sure, really shouldn’t risk it.
Great video, thanks!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Excellent explanation of the, what & why!
Glad to help
I'm glad to see you're starting on the Judge. I'm sorry it's turned into a mess. Unfortunately, a lot can happen to a car in 55 years.
It’s gas is issues for sure but way nicer then what I typically get.

I've seen backyard body guys do some shabby bodywork but you seem to be thorough with your work. Kudos
Thanks!! I can’t say what I do is perfect but I do try for the best possible results especially with what I am working with.

The hangin Judge, judge Roy Bean.
These names have been clever so many to pick from.
@@VinylVillageGarage Agreed. But here comes the judge is how the judge originally got its name .
And so it begins....
Yes indeed.

Still on the fence. I did remove the rest of the 1/4 panel from the wheel arch. No rust issues just dents from the collision damage.

Wow that would have been awesome. I can only imagine that is part of the why insurance company’s shut muscle cars down tho
Shouldn't you have the new deck lid installed in case that gives fitment issues?
Yes, if it wasn’t on backorder. No projected fill date yet.

VVG. What about dry ice blasting for that inner structure? No soda or sand left over to collect moisture later on.
That is an idea. I know for sure I will never dustless blast a car again. That was a huge mess
Yea i am not looking forward to doing this, i got 3 cars i got to do it to and these new parts scare me with fitment when it comes to body lines
Body lines do add to the challenge, even the factory they didn’t line up all the time. So don’t stress too much
