Actually, it's a trick some drummers use. Like a singer sings the song, the drummer sings the rhythm. It actually helps with coordination and memorisation.
Dave Grohl does it, and Eric Carr did, to name a few.

John Pavek Matt Garstka is a ghost note machine who has the left hand of a machine. JP is solid but check out Matt Garstka.
@@cvblaylock Matt and JP are completely different animals. JP is a grease machine, while Matt is like a finely tuned precision tool. Neither is better, but pretty much as diametrically opposed as you can get.
I was going to leave the same exact comment. JP from Clutch is a total Beast on the drums. I love the ghost notes he plays which you don’t see too many drummers do these days. That’s just another reason why JP is so awesome behind a drum kit!

I've re-watched this video so many times - I've lost count. The times might be changing, but thankfully Clutch keeps rocking!
I catch them every time they come close. The Pelham Caverns show was probably the best I've seen in 30 years of going to Clutch shows.

Nothing like Maryland crab cakes and Clutch. I grew up in Germantown, Maryland and was so lucky to hear these guys in their early days. Best damn band to EVER come out of Maryland. Clutch is one in a million.

Once did a back to back show..Traverse city Michigan and flilnt saw him drum for opening band because he never showed..then a set of bakerton...then almost 3 hours of clutch. Unbelievable. His way of spending up and slowing down is amazing. And he's throwing in half beats all the while. He is absolutely the only one that can play with the beat and make it sound like he does. It's not conventional he has made his own style.
