    The theme music was composed entirely through multitracking the Easel Command and using various functions therein. The drums were created from GarageBand loops.

    Thank you for this series.
    The original Easel manual, that's currently available on Buchla's website, is the most dry read I have ever experienced.
    Yes, the Easel was made for the user to experiment with but we need to know the basics before we go off into our own world of sound generation.
    Your episodes have helped provide the baseline knowledge needed for Easel owners to understand what does what, why what does what, and how to change *that* what to do some other *what*.
    It's really appreciated.

    Ooo, going to enjoy this demo series.
    The West Coast approach is admittedly confusing to me as I've never used it and you've already started clearing that up for me with just this initial video.
    Thanks Marc.

    I have the album "Touch", performed on a Buchla synth by Morton Subotnik, on the original vinyl. After many decades, it's still one of my favorite records, and I really appreciate how the sound is recognizably different from other synths. Thanks for the insights into how the sounds are produced!

    this series is much appreciated! i recently became intrigued with the buchla easel, got an arturia buchla easel v and am now attempting to cobble together something similar with a neutron and eurorack modules. this is going to help a lot! unfortunately, i'll never be able to afford an easel - got a poor-boy's volca modular though, and i'm looking forward to the results of my experiment. i follow most things buchla easel on the net - most of the stuff is for knowledgeable enthusiasts, but these videos start from the beginning and are extremely helpful for the beginner. thanks again.

      I make lots of sub basses with arturia easel v because it adds odd harmonics in a cool way 🙊 ofc i resample them afterwards but it is easy to get high quality interesting bass sounds out of it.

      @@automaticgainsay I bet this video series (and Arturia's version) generated and will generate more Buchla sales as they removed that initial mental barrier of entry as it seemed quite difficult to get hold of a good description of the system (strangely, Don never seemed bothered by this :-) ).

    What is your opinion on the sound of the new RoHS compliant vactrols VS the old school vactrols in the older easels?

    • @automaticgainsay
      @automaticgainsay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ugh, vactrols. They are a nightmare for Buchla. It’s very challenging to find a good, solid, consistent source of them, and then, there are vast variances between them, which means that they must be individually tested. So, before we even get to comparing various historical iterations, there’s all of that. There isn’t much that can be done.

    Marc....could Buchla style West Coast synthesis ever be done as a poly synth or is it too chaotic?

  • @grumpycomposer5658
    @grumpycomposer5658 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Marc, I hope all is well with you. Hey I have a question…on my easel command, I connected random to the oscillator and after a several minutes listening at a fairly fast pace, it became really apparent that it wasn’t so much random,as an actual sequence…a definite repeating looping pattern. I just wondered if you knew that Buchla Easel random is TRUE random…or it is just a sample of random that is then looped? I’d say it’s around a 64 note loop.(guessing). Thanks Marc.

    • @automaticgainsay
      @automaticgainsay  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, you're right! It is a definite loop of voltages! There are certain settings that reveal this truth, although many don't seem to. One of my Easel compositions on TH-cam, I can't recall which, makes it REALLY obvious, as it sounds almost like a repeated "melody."
