If the upper portion of the damn failed, it could cause a catastrophic failure of the riprap portion of the lower dam. This is much more serious than they’re letting on.
It shouldn't be hard to find info on a structure such as this. The only thing I heard last night is that the dam had been raised by two feet. This video states that it was raised in elevation back in the 1930s. The good news is that it is a natural lake so if the dam fails, 35 feet of water will stay in the basin. The bad news is that the water is for sale, and this is usually the reason for dam failures. The owners of the dam want to keep as much as possible, and predicting inflows is as accurate as predicting the weather. Oroville was nearly lost in 2017 because of this. Glen Canyon in 1983 nearly went away. This dam is not to the scale of those cited but is 100 years their elder. Info I found after some digging: The construction of the dam, which took place in phases from 1885 to 1975, changed the original depth of Panguitch Lake from 35 feet to 40 feet, then to 50 feet and finally to 60 feet. The dam was built to hold more water for irrigation, and the water level was controlled by the West Panguitch Irrigation Company. EDIT: I did find some cool info from the floods of 1914 in this area while researching. Big time stuff, indeed!
It should have been fixed during the drought. I have been fishing from that dam for years and it was obvious to the untrained eye that it would would break as soon as panguich lake filled up again. Lesson learned. Never trust the gov. Or state bureaucracy to keep your safety first. The lessons that we learn are written on the tombstones of those who came before us.
I would put a little trust in them to do what they could to stop it, but I would put a lot of trust in them to be completely honest about the level of risk. Be ready for the worst. Make sure your pets are ready.
what does highway patrol know about civil engineering. a damn break is seriously bad, and downplaying the situation could put people at risk. no common sense at work here, looked like panic too me
The zombies are trying to stop the Chad Daybell trial😮 We can't gage anything right now. Oh really? Put all the data in a computer and let A.I. tell you what to do!

Yeah Right, I remember the Teton Dan going and it is a BIG Deal

Be alert! Utah has a shortage of Lerts.
These men don't seem concerned about human life. Our state continually Broadcasts preparedness even in low risk.

Why is a Highway Patrol dude talking about a potential dam rupture? They couldn't find a hydraulic engineer?
Our dam infrastructure is failing around the country!!!
Lots of money for the illegal's and Ukraine out there little for we the people

Water forces would affect the whole damage thing....not just the top portion of dam
It' s going to go!
