    Those drum spinner bots are just NASTY! They can chew up, flip, avoid, and outrun just about any other type of bot out there. Always know you’ll see a good fight when aa drum is out there

    All I’m saying is you weld a Milwaukee angle grinder to some c-channel off a 1996 ram 1500 and then bolt some wheels to the c-channel. You power the wheels using the motors for the windows from the 1996 ram and then power the whole contraption with some 18v 12amp hour high output batteries from Milwaukee and then just fuckin send it bud

    • @thisdustin2435
      @thisdustin2435  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We designed the robot from the ground up, the frame you see there we cut on a waterjet, a machine that uses high pressure water and garnet (basically sand) to cut through metals and other materials. The other parts we machined ourselves. We're fortunate to have extensive machining resources at school, we primarily use the waterjet, knee mills, cnc mill, and lathes. Most of the other components such as bearings, shafts, and chain we got from McMaster-Carr. The electronics mostly came from HobbyKing. If you're building your first bot, I highly recommend starting with a 3lber, there are plenty of competitions and you can build one for around 300-600$ using basic power tools. If you just google "how to build 3lb battlebot" there are tons of blog posts to get you started.

    • @thisdustin2435

      The weapon motor was a Castle Creations 2028. Drum requires about 3000W of power to spin. We are a part of our college's robotics team, RoboJackets, so that is where the funding comes from.

    I have a question, were any of you guys in First Robotics, and if so, how much differently do you approach construction on a battle bot from a game bot?

    • @thisdustin2435
      @thisdustin2435  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was never in First but some other team members were. But our typical construction process goes like this: CAD every single part and assembly, down to the electronics and screws. Waterjet frame and make holes and pockets on the mill/cnc mill. Cut plastic armor with tablesaw/chopsaw. Turn parts on the Lathe for pulleys/shafts/wheels. Tap holes for bolts. Assemble, mostly held together by screws, no welds. Wire electronics.

    What was your electronics setup like? Did you just have redundant circuit boards or anything like that?

    • @thisdustin2435
      @thisdustin2435  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      3 5800mAh Lipo Batteries, 2 Vyper ESC's, Castle Creation's 2028 Motor and ESC, 2 Ampflow A28-150s. No redundancy but made sure everything had a safety factor of at least 1 on max current capacity.

    • @130090558
      @130090558 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ThisDustIn any particular reason you used rechargeable batteries? Wouldn't disposable ones be more efficient?

    • @thisdustin2435
      @thisdustin2435  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      To get that amount of power out of AA's you would need about 120 of them, and it would last 5 minutes. That translates to about 100$ of batteries per 5 minutes. Lipo's are far more cost efficient, as you can cycle them 100s of times without significant capacity loss. They are also more energy dense, meaning they don't take up a lot of space or weight for a given amount of power.
