Great video! I referenced your older videos, among others, when first learning about sub setup then use of dual subs and REW. Effective use of REW and Dual subs has been a game-changer.
Andrew, I have a suggestion for a video. I had a new open concept house built and the center speaker had to be boosted 4db, as I could not hear the voices and listening to music beat my eardrums to death. Come to find out these more modern houses with wood floors and open concept suffer from echo effects that can make even great speakers sound hash and horrid. I have been working through simple solutions with my Facebook audio groups and my wife and myself made some drastic improvements today without compromising our esthetics! A video covering open concepts, noise damping etc, would be helpful to many. You have a way of making your videos deliver complex problems and complex solutions seem easy. I know this was 4 years ago Andrew but it popped up in my feed. Easily the best and simplest explanation of subwoofer setup I’ve ever heard. Thanks for always being very engaging with your reviews and advice 👌👌
Good advice. I have an old REL Q400e that still packs a punch. My neighbours love it too. They even bricked my window so they could hear it aswell as the vibrations.. Evidence they have a good taste in subwoofers.
This was very helpful! I watched few different videos and all of them were so "techy". A few were just lectures with zero hands on demos. I love how you gave some clear action plans us novices could try. Thanks so much.
Andrew you’re a true savior! This video is everything I’ve been trying to find that’s simple to understand and do yourself, rather then waste a lot of money on a company to do it. And the best part, I own this specific AVR as well! Thank you so much! I was just about to get a subwoofer, but didn’t know anything about crossover and all that weird stuff. Now I understand and can set it up without issues. Thank you!
OMG, it's like I've just seen the Matrix !!! Thank you so much for producing such a clean, straight forward video to follow. One of the best youtube channels. Peace from Sydney Australia
thank you for explaining the 80 Hz crossover "problem". Some professionals told me already that i have to set my speakers as "small" and let the subwoofer do work on the rest, but i was thinking, why did i spend my money for the front speakers than? You explained it to me very well and this question isnt triggering my brain anymore.
Andrew - I’ve watched some of your videos for 1-2 months now, and I have to say, I enjoy your video format and dialog. Kudos to you and Kristi for the excellent work you two put in. You’ve earned my subscription to this channel and follow on Instagram. Thank you for sharing your insight in such a palatable manner.
Super helpful video!! Most videos stop at the subwoofer crawl. This explained all the other bits that I found super confusing. Also the random bits at the end are the best 😂👌👌
Question about orientation after you find the best location... with a rear-ported sub, should the main driver face outwards from the wall (port facing the wall) or parallel to the wall (driver and port aligned parallel to the wall)? Does it make any huge difference?
This is a really excellent video and it makes sense at even my level of comprehension. There is something I'd like to share about Sub placement though, which may be useful and save you even more time IF you have a neighbour like mine below! One, you cannot keep it on the floor. Don't even think about it. Two, I have kept mine in a large, old, leatherette armchair ie; about 18" above the floor and heavily cushioned / padded. Now I can push the chair around a bit, IF I need to but it stays on it. I told you, easy! Reality: We don't get to position our Subs ideally. 😊 (Volume and Frequency also, will be decided by HIM)
I think a small tweaks for improved sound would be useful for a lot of people. Stuff like proper speaker placement, removing as many reflections as possible like moving center to front edge of cabinet, thick rug if you have hardwood floors, proper toe in and how to check it with pink noise, filling speaker stands with sand are the few ideas that come to mind. I just bought a Umik-1 and a 35ft subwoofer cable to help with setting up my duals better. Also you shouldn't set the distance of the sub exactly to the physical distance as there is going to be some signal delay especially if you have a wireless module.
Thanks! I learned a new way to figure out sub placement! Wish you included info on subwoofer settings "LFE + Main" or "Double Bass" for those using large main speakers that have receivers that offer it.
OH CRAP, we actually had a brief mention about that recorded and, well, I guess editing late at night meant I somehow missed it! OMG! Yes, on some receivers if you use large as your speaker's setting you may have to look elsewhere in your receiver's menus for Main+Sub, LFE+Main or the like. Cannot believe I left that out!
Hi Andrew, great video. Simple and effective. I did not understand one aspect though. What is the reference point of decibel level that we shoud use when caliberating the speakers and sub-woofer using decible meter
This was really useful! Great video! I get my system to operate at full range. I just changed subwoofer position and some settings from amplifier. My wife’s reaction to new sound: “Did you buy something new again?!!!!” “No… I just changed some things.”
Great video. Funny, I had downloaded an SPL meter app just a few weeks ago to measure my band's rehearsal volume levels...but it hadn't occurred to me to use it for the test tone on my AVR. Lo and behold, all channels measured evenly--after years of naked-ear balancing, it's fun to see the results in a visual graph. Thanks!
I bought the same sub and got it delivered yesterday. Unfortunately, the amp is bad and the LED light kept flashing green and red. Didn't hear any output. Nothing. Pretty disappointing but I'm glad your enjoy yours!
This video couldn’t have come at a better time because I just bought my first home theater sub. Been running the Jamo HCs 803 5.0. Added the atmos and finally bought the sub. This is my first try at home theater and so far I’ve learned a ton from your channel and others who are knowledgeable in the industry. It’s not the best or most expensive by any means but it’s got me interested in the hobby and for that I thank you!
In my bedroom I use two Sunfire subs. I originally had two 12” inchers. However I ended up replacing the one in the corner with a 10” and the 12” was closer to my bedroom door which had a small hallway. I struggled for two weeks messing with all the settings and I was amazed how things settled simply by changing the subwoofer. I run two subs not for more thump... but at lower volumes, the bass is more lively and effective.
Immanuel Suresh In my situation it was the right solution because my room isn’t symmetrical and where the subs were located, the 10” in the corner and 12” near my doorway/entrance worked better. In general two same sized subs are more ideal.
With subwoofers, can you present a video on adding and setting up a subwoofer in a two channel system without a subwoofer out. This is particularly common with vintage receivers and amps.
You can typically take a full range phono output from an amp and sent that to the sub, but you will need to manually set the crossover in line with your speakers response. Some subwoofers, Rel are particularly well know for this, will allow you to connect the speaker level cables to them.
A cheap laser distance measure is awesome in getting accurate speaker distances. Sit in the PLP and point it from your forehead directly to the speaker cone.
There was quite some new facts I didn't know yet, Andrew. If you set the Subwoofer 180° to the main speakers, you should turn the Phase to 180° or Reverse, too I love the Outtakes
I would rather prefer the way you explained in this video for setting up the speaker levels than that of the other channels using REW, MiniDSP, etc. For me it is a slow and gradual process of correcting and taking those baby steps towards the perfection we desire.
Hey. I have Denon AVC-X3700H. When I run test tone listening, there's coming almost no sound from a subwoofer. Subwoofer gain is about 12 o'clock. I know that subwoofer is working. If I want to raise subwoofer level in test tone, I have to raise it about +10 dB to match other speakers levels. ?
Great guide! I'll definitely send it to people who are new to setting up a home theater. Can you make a more advanced guide on how to go about calibrating the system when measurement tools (microphone/REW) are available? Maybe go into more detail on how to find the correct Crossover frequency for the room/speakers, correct phase, transfer the suggested EQ corrections to the AVR or to the player (if stereo). I've been trying to setup my HT setup alone for a long, long time now. Running around the room got tedious and I finally gave up and ordered the XTZ Room Analyzer 2 Pro. Have not gotten round to using it yet, but the things above are some points that I will personally be very interested in learning.
A parametric EQ video using software like REW is coming at a later date. I wanted to start with the basics first, then move onwards from there. Thanks for watching!
Good day, I recently picked up a Klipsch R120 from the Christmas in July sale...what I found is that "perfect" for one song was too much on another. Obviously not an issue with movies but on many tracks I do find myself turning down the volume on the sub... like from 12 to 10. Just sharing initial impression. Gear used is Marantz nr1200. emotiva basx 300 and focal 936. Great vid u guys.
Finally broke down and added a sub to my vintage 2 channel system, a Klipsch R-10SWi. I mostly stream via a Bluesound Node 2i. So my CD as well as Tidal runs through the 2i. The sub connected to the Node's sub out. On initial install, I was ready to pack the sub up for a return. Sounded like a bad boom box regardless of the gain/roll off setting. Luckily, for the sub, found this video. Used this technique to properly set and position. Thanks to the sub being wireless, the setup was just a matter of sitting it in my listening position. Much better. Found that the Sub-out on a Node is active regardless of the setting in BluOS. In either setting the volume control in BluOS will match the signal going to the sub. Can't say that Scott LaFaro's bass now makes angels cry, but it does widen the sound-stage for most of the music I listen to.
Reality about walking the room to place the sub woofer. Sit the wife in the chair , walk the perimeter of the room... ."how , about here dear?" "No " "what about here?"...... "defiantly not , it ruins the symmetry of the room"... "how about over here , you can put your potted plan on it?..... "Oh , if you must , but your doing the washing up tonight"
So after watching this video I decided to try this setup as suggested in this video.... IT'S AS IF I HAD SWAP OUT MY 10 INCH SUB FOR A 16 IN man what a difference such a simple setup can make iv always see other suggest the subwoofer crawl test but didn't think anything of it but it really works man. And by sub is a budget sub and I think I may hold off on an upgrade now because I thought my sub was the weakest link in my home theater system. Great video man keep them coming
@@Ade5 LFE + main / LFE only are part of some subwoofer sound set ups especially when using Marantz or Denon receivers. I use Marantz and would like to know this also?
I followed these steps to get more out of my 5.1 system, and boy did it work. I especially enjoyed phase tining my sub, moving the sound back and forth. Ah, knowledge feels good, thanks for making me smarter Andrew 😍
Hi! Great video. I was wondering... I have 2 individual couches so neither of both are in the centre of the room. So from which point should I measure the distance of the speakers? Thanks!
Hi Andrew. First of all, you are awesome. This is your 3rd or 4th video that I am watching and am learning a lot. I am confused between using height or ceiling speakers when setting up my 7.2 atmos setup. One constraint that I have is the depth of the ceiling speaker I can use. Your insights and recommendations would be of great help to me
You’d probably get better realism with ceiling. There’s quite the restriction with height. However, you will have more choices with height, and if you are willing to rig up better speakers and act like ceiling speakers, it can work too! You tend to have more commitment with ceiling speakers, as you need to drill your ceiling, and so forth. But an advice I would give, consider the looks, price, and choice of presentation. Hidden? Or shown with more good looking speakers. Will height on the wall compared to ceiling, does the “realism feeling” have a big drawback or feel disappointed when you listen to them? And consider matching them sonically with your main speakers. Sounds like a fun setup! All the best!
Thats what either the Audyssey or other room correction in your AVR (by setting distance), or a miniDSP can do that a manual phase switch/dial cannot do as well.
When doing the crawl, I would recommend playing a clean sine wave in the 25hz to 80hz range, like 45hz for example, instead of playing music. I used a DAW (Ableton Live) to generate various frequencies easily, but that's pretty difficult for most people, so you can probably find TH-cam videos of specific frequencies. Listening to music is a lot harder when doing the crawl. If you're able to control a clean sine frequency, you can also hear the exact frequencies that cabinets start to rattle, because rattles happen in very tight specific ranges, so you wouldn't be able to find them just listening to music. I had a wall mounted fire extinguisher rattling at 40hz, and it was an easy fix, just separated it from the wall a bit. But everything in the room will rattle at different frequencies, so you have to slowly go up in frequencies to hear each of those rattles separately.
Glad I watched this, because I was having problems where I tried a few different placements and found the base sounded amazing standing in certain spots, but when ever I sat in my chair I could hardly hear it 😢 thanks for the thorough video.
Andrew, thank you for doing this video, it was a bit eye opening or ear in this case. I've watched other videos about sub placement etc but yours was more helpful. I thought that my YU6 and Sub8 was sounding really good until I placed my head directly between the YU and Sub, it sounded off/out of phase so I switched it to 180 on the sub and voila, much better. I had to readjust the crossover and volume a pinch because the phase is now correct. Now it is sounding really good ! Thank you.
Excellent tutorial! I always thought that using a corner or “bass trap” was the best way to position a sub but I’m going to try “the crawl” on my family room system to see if perhaps there is a spot in the room it will sound better :)
Great Video Andrew. Very well paced and explained well. It's been valuable even though I've already had it setup for a while, I'll be re-doing it using your instruction. Cheers!
I like the style, how down on earth and speaking the way amateurs can understand, I'm a basshead so maybe hear from you about loudest subwoofers. Now I have over 30 year old 8 inch and SVS Sb4000 Those 2 work together really well actually..
I'm so glad I found your channel. Thanks for sharing your passion! Being an audio enthusiast for quite a while, I've picked up many cool tips from you. Thank you
Found your channel recently and am binge watching your catalog. This one was a big help with setting up my Cinema 600 sub. Your voice sounds buttery smooth on the Cinema 600, btw. As a way to say thanks, I cast this video to my theater room TV, liked and left a comment just to tingle those TH-cam algos. Cheers.
I've had my system for about 3 years but I just went thru it all again and was more picky about settings and such. Sounds great! Great video and how does this Andrew only have 125k subs!?

Wow, thanks!
What about setting for bass like -> Subwoofer mode = LFE or LFE+Main and LPF for LFE??

When doing the "crawl", I also hold a balloon between my hands and you can really feel where the bass is at its peak in addition to using your ears.
never thought of that; great idea 👍🏻
Yeah, wicked.
Crawling the room with a baloon in hand. 😂😂 Just imaging what would someone make of it if they just enter the room. 😂
This is very easy to understand, and to the point of context.
So glad it made sense! Thanks for watching!

They do that sometimes.
Even if you are running large tower speakers like the Klipsch 8000 II. I should still set them to small, not large?

"how about over here , you can put your potted plan on it?.....
"Oh , if you must , but your doing the washing up tonight"
Lmao facts
#true #reallife That was the only convo I could think of during the sub crawl.
Great video man keep them coming
you did not go over/explain LFE + main...
This was how to setup a subwoofer.. Not connect one..
Placement - lol. I have two SVS PB13 Ultras - they weigh 155 lbs each - they will be staying where they fit, please and thank you.
Hi! Great video.
I was wondering... I have 2 individual couches so neither of both are in the centre of the room. So from which point should I measure the distance of the speakers?
Thanks!
I just got klipsch spl 120sw it shakes whole neighbour
same lmao
Real great, now I understand why I have for so long I have been unhappy with my sub. Will try steps you have shown
Shows us that he has a proper spl meter in the intro. Proceeds to use his smartphone instead in the video.
Thanks! my new subwoofer will arrive tomorrow and this tricks will be very helpful!!
Perfect timing. Let us know how it works out for you.
@@KristiWright Sure, in a couple of days i'll do
This is what youtube is for people who know their shit explaining shit to us.
I've been binging your educational stuff and learning so much. Thanks for making these friggin' excellent vids!
*also tag yourself, I'm the guy with the van.
Finally I know what ‘phase matching means’!!!! Unfortunately I’m stuck with the 0 to 180 setting but at least I know what I’m looking for now 😊
Thats what either the Audyssey or other room correction in your AVR (by setting distance), or a miniDSP can do that a manual phase switch/dial cannot do as well.
Yes, this manual method is all new to me. Seems very cool!
Cheers
Eric
Great to hear!
I purchased a pair of Kanto TUK with the S8......this video helps big time! The “crawl”
is key
This is all new and interesting. Curious about adding subwoofer(s) to a stereo setup, crossover basic setup (seems essential from what I read).
I love the way you review and provide information like this. You information has helped to put together a basic mid level system.
Thank you!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews you did not mention "Low Pass" please help clarify. Thank you.
Thank you for making this video Andrew....wanted to learn this for a while now....now off to fix all the subs in my house!
Glad I could help!
Thank you
Excellent explanation with easy demo
Thank you for this video! Was a massive help as I’m completely new to the home theatre scene so thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
Nice one, well explained. Question: What receiver setting do you recommend for a subwoofer in a music-only setup (2+1): LFE + Main or LFE only?
Great video again mate! I find dual subwoofers works better as the transition is better and you can’t localise the bass. 👍🏽
Cheers.
Welcome aboard! Thank you so much!
Excellent info! On the audio groups I belong to, someone asks about the small/large speaker settings nearly every day.
Share this video with them to hopefully answer their question(s). Thanks for watching!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Already have.
Thanks!
Thank you for your generosity!
Great video as usual. Followed some of these tips and I can already tell a difference in my setup. Thanks again for the teachings 👌🏽
Great to hear!
Watching the Finding Nemo scene where Darla is tapping on the fish tank feels like I’m in the fish tank 🤣😂😂
Thanks a lot, well explained. I have been looking for a video like this for weeks. You got a new subscriber!
I've had my system for about 3 years but I just went thru it all again and was more picky about settings and such. Sounds great!
Great video and how does this Andrew only have 125k subs!?
