This is an amazing thing to witness, elephants able to be elephants and people not trying to train or change them. No chains, no ridiculous body painting and no invasion of their space. She allows them to come to her for any touch interactions. I think all wildlife sanctuaries could learn a thing or two from this women.

Faa Mai is treating Lek like she is her baby. She's treating her just like she would treat a baby elephant, trying to get her to go under/between her feet to protect her. :-) Not sure about the walking backwards part, though! lol

M'aiq was making the "Beep... beep... beep" noises to himself when the elephant was backing up.
Yes, she's treating her just as she would behave in protecting a very young calf. The walking backwards slowly is something they do when the youngster is behind them, they will gently stretch their back leg out to feel for it and touch it, or sometimes just use the tail. It's just another way they keep in close contact. These two obviously have a very special bond and it's wonderful to see, n'est ce pas?
I saw it as the elephant wanted to stay between the cameraman and the lady... keep an eye on him while still following her.

Those wonderful elephants know very well that SHE is their "mama." Love them and her for her dedication to her friends
Actually the elephant thinks the human is a baby, hence the protective stance over her like an adult does to young ones, and the constant nudging along.
She would defend Lek until there is no drop of blood in her, even if you came with a tank. Lek is famous in Thailand for her elephant care, and the elephants know and discussed already they will do everything to protect her.

I was just going to write the exact same comment. When I watch amazing videos like this, and others in game reserves where elephants are just living their lives as they should, baby ellies in zoos appear on my feed. I look at the comments, and those people will say "at least the elephants in the zoos are safe," and how "educational" it is to have these magnificent creatures locked up for life.
If someone said to you I can lock you up in an apartment for the rest of your life so that nothing bad ever happens to you, would you choose to be locked up, or be free?

The ONLY EXCEPTION WOULD BE FOR animals that are facing extinction that may be helped in a facility that could help w/birth rates or unique diseases. *Any other type of controlled facility would be a Reserve to help injured animals, orphaned animals or animals from zoos that need reintroduced into natural habitats. All animals were created, by GOD, to live free!*

Very little room to run around and be themselves. Some zoos (even in the USA) do not give animals whose kind have died NEW members of their species to interact with and be less lonely around.

It's clear that they totally know and trust you and have accepted you as one of them. It seems that the one takes a protective stance over you! I always say, you can't fool babies and dogs...They have an innate sense of who is good and who isn't. It's clear that elephants have this sense too and they know your purity and goodness!
