Clean My Space hey I just got an old dresser for free. It is pure solid wood and weight probably 100 pounds. It is very dust and has a lot of scuffs, streaks, and some of the wood looks like it has lifted and separated on top. My biggest concern though, are the metal tracks the drawers slide on. The tracks a kind of gooey (yuck) and look dull and almost like someone had glue on their hand and pressed their prints on to the tracks ( i have no idea what it is). I tried rubbing alcohol after using bleach to clean it down, but nothing seems to get the goo off the tracks so that they glide freely and I don't want to remove all the tracks because I don't know how and it would take all day, plus the time of cleaning them and trying to put them back. (16 tracks) I know your tracks probably are either really clean already or are not made of metal but how would you clean them?

      Rebecah I'd try removing the drawers &&& cleaning the tracks from the inside &&& use real wood cleaners on it. I found this for you, NY Times 12/30/1990;
      HOME CLINIC
HOME CLINIC; If Those Drawers Stick
      By JOHN WARDE
      Published: December 30, 1990
CABINET drawers that stick are a nuisance, but generally they are fairly easy to repair once the problem has been identified.
When a drawer sticks only at certain times of the year -- summer is the most common -- it is often better to do nothing about it except to lubricate the drawer. High humidity is usually the culprit. It causes wood drawer parts to swell and rub against each other.
Once the humidity subsides, typically in the fall and winter, so does the swelling. If you try to eliminate the rubbing by reducing the thickness of the swollen parts, the drawer may wobble when the wood returns to its normal dimensions.
Repairs are in order if stickiness persists throughout the year. First, determine exactly where the sticking occurs. To do this, pull out the drawer. Remove it, if possible. Check the sliding surfaces or mechanisms for obstructions, warping or wear.
There are basically two kinds of drawers: those with runners on the bottom and those suspended from the cabinet sides by metal or wood tracks. Drawers with bottom runners slide on guides that are part of the cabinet frame. The runners may be simply the bottom surfaces of the drawer.
With wood runners or tracks, slide your fingers gently over them, but watch out for splinters. If the runners feel rough but are reasonably flat, smooth them by rubbing them lightly with fine-grit sandpaper held in a sanding block or wrapped around a flat-sided piece of wood.
Afterward, lubricate the runners by rubbing them with a bar of soap or a candle, or by spraying them with silicone or Teflon lubricant.
Worn or broken runners or wood tracks should be repaired. But first, to gauge their condition accurately, make sure the drawer guides are in working order.
Check and lubricate the guides and clean the corners of debris with an ice pick or the point of a nail. Drive any protruding nail heads below the surface with a hammer and nail set.
If a guide is loose, refasten it in its original position with woodworking glue or small nails. To tell where the guide should go, look for old nail holes, glue residue and differences in the color of the wood to which the guide is fastened.
Align the guides so that they are parallel, else the drawer may bind. Large drawers sometimes have a central guide beneath them. Be sure it is parallel to the guides at each side of the cabinet.
Drawers with a central guide usually also have a plastic clip, called a track holder, attached to the lower edge of the back of the drawer. This device fits over the central guide and keeps the drawer on course.
When checking, be sure that the track holder fits squarely and that its fasteners are tight.
If guides are worn, one way to restore them is to insert thumbtacks along their concave abraded portions, to level the surface. That will compensate for the wear.
Another way is to install small right-angled nylon brackets called drawer glides. Fastened with small screws at intervals along both guides, they support the drawer fully on both sides.
After repairing, lubricate the guides and reinstall the drawer in the cabinet. If the drawer still sticks, turn your attention again to the runners. Remove the drawer and rub chalk along their bottom edges. Then push the drawer in and out a few times.
If the runners are warped, the most probable cause of the sticking, the chalk will have been rubbed away from the problem areas.
As a remedy, try sanding the runners with medium-grit sandpaper wrapped around a block. About every 25 strokes, test your progress by laying the narrow edge of a ruler on the runner and looking for gaps between the two.
If the warping is too severe for sanding, clamp the drawer in a vise and true the runners with a sharp plane instead. Set the tool to take paper-thin shavings, and always plane in the direction of the wood grain to avoid chipping the surface.
If a drawer wobbles, the runners or guides may be worn, rather than warped. Holding a ruler against their surfaces and checking for gaps, as described, is the best way to test for wear.
To repair the worn edge of a runner so that it is level with the rest of the surface, try installing thumbtacks, just as you did for worn guides. Push the tacks into the edge at the low points.
You can also use nylon stem bumpers; these are made for the purpose, but to install them, holes must be drilled in the runner.
If a runner is extremely worn, plane or sand it flat and level. Then rebuild it to its original dimensions by attaching strips of wood veneer to the planed surface.
Use hardwood veneer called edge banding. This comes in a roll and is usually backed with heat-sensitive adhesive. Place the banding, with its adhesive side down, on the runner's edge so that any excess width overhangs the outside of the drawer. Then press the banding with a moderately heated clothes iron to fasten it.
To trim the banding, turn the drawer over and set it on a hard work surface. Using the side of the drawer as a guide, slice through the excess banding with a razor-sharp utility knife. Next, sand the trimmed edge smooth.
To fix a broken runner, plane it flat and level and then rebuild it by gluing on a strip of wood thicker than veneer.
Drawers with metal runners and tracks can often be fixed simply by lubricating the parts with a few drops of lightweight household oil.
If that application does not work, remove the drawer, tighten any loose fasteners and then clean the parts with a cloth or a cotton swab dipped in kerosene or cigarette-lighter fluid.
Lubricate the parts before reinstalling the drawer. If parts are bent or damaged, or if sticking wheels cannot be freed, replace the mechanism.
On rare occasions, drawers stick because the cabinet has warped, and the sides are no longer square. Problems like those, as well as those involving fine furniture whose value may be lessened by amateur repairs, should be handled by a professional cabinetmaker or repair specialist.

A suggestion for Chad? Maybe he can be allowed to keep a "memory box" and keep ONE of his ten old cell phones as a keepsake, as well as that cup he's had since he was 14. I love decluttering as much as the next person but there are some items I want to keep forever, even if they are no longer useful or relevant because of how much they mean to me. Declutter the pantry! Every January I try to go through the pantry and toss any expired food. Everything expires, even things like jello or pudding powder. I always pass over a box of tuna helper in the cupboard, looked at it the other day and realized it expired 10 months ago! Same with canned goods, condiments in the fridge, spices and baking supplies. The freezer also deserves to be tidied, I know there's a bag of mango from last year in there I keep saying I'll use in smoothies, but it hasn't happened yet and probably won't.

Old polish becomes vintage after about 10 years. Consider throwing those up on eBay or StoreEnvy if they are mostly full. You may need to use a q tip and acetone to clean up the neck if there is old polish there. Take clear photos and have good lighting. Research types - if it is multichrome, glitter, holographic, shimmer, cream, jelly or crelly. I'd especially do this if they are brands like StreetWear (big market!) or if they are from the 90s or older. Nail polish does not go off. Never add acetone or polish remover if they have dried up (it ruins it). A serious collector will have proper polish thinner and can rehydrate vintage polish when they buy them.

One thing that helped me is to put the shoe on the other foot, so to speak. I would never expect or think about someone holding onto something I got them, especially if I no longer had a use for it. Most days I barely remember what I got them if it's been a while and I doubt anyone else does lol. Donating it for someone who can get use out of it, rather than stashing it away, also makes me feel better. Things like cards and what not, minus the really special ones or that have notes from special people, get similar treatment. I typically treat them like the garnish to the present or whatever; therefore, don't care whether anyone keeps them; it's just for the moment. That way, the really special ones stand out more.
For things that are meant to remember people by, I kind of learned to think similar. For instance, my mom passed on an old rocking chair of my grandparents. It was way too small, not my style and basically just took up space and had to go wherever I moved. It finally dawned on me that my gran never would want me to hold onto something I didn't feel totally sentimental about, which is exactly why she gave it away lol. And because it was comically too small for my grandfather, who she bought it for. She didn't keep it and doubt she'd want me to feel obligated to. I was able to donate it to a veterans' home and they even sent a special thanks for it. That meant a lot, especially since my gramps was a WWII vet and would've liked that. After that, I only keep small or manageable items that mean something, or ones that I know the person absolutely loved.

    • @Littlemisswantitall
      @Littlemisswantitall 7 ปีที่แล้ว

if you don't like it i'm sure the person who gave you the item wouldn't want you to keep it if it makes you unhappy or takes up space you need , you could always take a photo of the item before giving it away if it's only sentiment making you keep it lol life is too short to hold onto things just because someone gave you something or because of a memories, memories are in the head and heart not an item

I use an empty tissue box to collect receipts on the kitchen counter. Then they go into a spreadsheet so we can determine what we are spending our money on and trim our expenses. The physical receipts are put into a binder either using manila envelopes (12 one for each month) or stapled to a sheet of paper. We are definitely in the habit of returning items and having a receipt ensures we get our money back or full credit. I have caught a few mistakes on my credit card bill and these receipts have helped me to reduce or eliminate the charges.

In the US, you can donate old phones to women's shelters. They use them to give to women for safety while out. 911 is available to use whether the phone is active or not. I really like this idea!!! Another idea for sterling silver jewelry is to put a silca packet in the areas of your jewelry box that contains said silver jewelry. It absorbs the humidity in that area, thus keeping your jewelry from tarnishing. You can also put several of the packets in with your sterling silver cutlery. It works the same way to keep them from tarnishing!!! Thanks for all your help!!!

Love the ArtKive idea. I wonder if there is something similar for old notes etc that you want to remember.. like I have a box full of journals that I don't necessarily want to keep but I hate to throw away cause they have good memories/quotes etc. I know I can type them up but it takes so much time lol

I'm a preschool teacher, and we put the children's artwork in binders with sleeves. It keeps everything in order and protects it, and most people have room for a binder. You could always scan and sort the non-favorites on your computer if you don't want to use an app.
Tarnished jewelry can often be cleaned, and broken/mismatched jewelry is GREAT for crafts. If you're not gonna use them yourself, give them to your artsy friend or put them all in a bag and donate them to a thrift store.

You can always donate old phones (as long as they have a charger) to your county’s victims services department. They can hand them out to victims to be able to use the emergency call feature, even when they don’t have service. Maybe the possibility of saving a life will help Chad feel better about parting with his old phones.

I just recently sub to your channel. I haven't had a chance to view all your older videos but I am anxious to start. We just built a new house, smaller than our last house. We are trying to downsize and get rid of things. It is not easy. We are drowning in a sea of paper. From our own papers, to the various organizations we volunteer for and serve as clerk/secretary, committees, information, where do we put this all. AND don't get me started on junk mail, bills, receipts, policies, etc. I remember a saying...you are the CEO of your own company, meaning your household. Well this household needs help

To use up stuff like condiment packets from takeout my mom puts them in a glass cup over the microwave so it's easier to access then say getting ketchup out of the fridge. Good way to make sure you use it.
She also adds paper napkins into the same holder with the rest or sometimes removes them before we even get home to restock the ones they keep in the clics compartment.
Plastic utensils just get tossed into the same box with the other plastic utensils we keep so they get used when we use them.
Just ways just to prevent those items from cluttering in the first place.

Hi Melissa...I believe that wonderful leg lamp ..... is from the movie "A Christmas Story" ... That's the movie where the little boy wants a beebee gun so badly..... It's become kind of a classic Christmas movie to watch..... AND...you've got a copy of the lamp which is much bigger in the movie. You always have such good tips. Here's a fun project....years ago my mother-in-law was collecting a bunch of old jewelry for a project. She got 3 styrofoam tall cone things and crafted the 3 wise men and sprayed it gold and then covered them with the jewels....they looked real neat....hmmmmm...she has passed a few years ago and I wonder who has them now? Take care oxoxox

I have a lot of souvenir drinking mugs that I use to collect for water. I stopped buying them because I don't have anymore space. Also I recently started buying packages of 16 oz. bottles and drinking out of them . They are far more convenient. Anyway, I am wondering what to do with the mugs because I don't think I will be using them in the future, yet I still like to see them as a reminder of where I had been. Possibly I could take photos and just give the actual items away. That is a thought..

Help, Melissa (and/or CMS community)! Should I toss these or is there a way to clean them?
    1) Travel makeup case.
    - It has specks and splotches of mascara, eyeliner, and powder all over the inside after many uses. It's a soft surface, so I can't get the gunk of easily, but I also don't know if I should soak it, since there is padding inside and I don't want it to get mouldy.
    2) Off-white handbag that's now stained blue from my dark wash jeans!
    - I tried a few different methods of wiping off the blue, but no luck. It's a synthetic "leather" material that is smooth. It also has synthetic "suede" fringe (ooh, so trendy) on the front that could use a clean, but I'm afraid getting it wet in any way will absolutely ruin it.
    Your thoughts?
    Thanks so much!

I have to agree that receips take a lot of space, I always fight with buch of envelopes full of them. And my biggest problem is for sure T-shirts from camps, trips, vacations with lots of memories but takeing up a lot of space in our closet.
