    I'm quite happy with the direction Faun is taking after they have left Universal. Pre-ordered the upcoming album. Based on what they have released since Halloween, it will be really good.

    I don’t think I have heard Faun before, however I have heard their name somewhere before. Heard you mention Wardruna, maybe that’s were I seen their name mentioned, perhaps. They sound great, especially the old instruments being played. Very enjoyable and well worth looking into IMO. ❤️🤘🎸🇦🇺

    I've been loving this one.
    Galdra seems to be Icelandic for Magic, unless someone knows better.
    I assume the video refers to Odin losing an eye in exchange for wisdom. I read that the band were thinking of Odin, who was accused of performing seiðr, a form of magic usually practiced by women.

      Yeah, the Galdr (pluar Galdrar) is the Old Norse word for spell or incantation.

      It is indeed good. I only found Eluveitie a few days before Gwydion, so it was a bit of a surprise when they turned up on a Faun song.

    IDK if someone already told you to check out the TH-cam on the “making of” this song, but in it they say there’s a legend once Loki accused Odin of being an old woman…this song sort of played into creation of an Odin avatar , with a woman’s body. I understand that the word ‘galdra’ refers to magical working…spell casting

  • @jesikats712
    @jesikats712 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    galdr or galdra is old norse for magic, magical chanting, spell, sorcery ect. more specifically "to perform magic"

    Hello from germany! Galdra means witches, magic and it comes from the iceladic language! It's a sorcerer with a certain spell ! It comes from Norse mythology! You are great! ❤️

    Even though I usually prefer artists from northern Europe playing folk-influenced music and am not too fond of bands singing in German (in spite of being German myself), I liked this song, perhaps because it has overall a somewhat darker atmosphere. For something with a very intense atmosphere, tribal-like drumming and an impressive joiking vocal performance which might set you in a trance-like mood, I recommend (once again) this live rendition of the song "Goaskinviellja" (i.e. Eagle Brother) by the Norwegian singer Mari Boine: th-cam.com/video/kprl0CECykA/w-d-xo.html
    The lyrics are sung in Sami and the music includes influences from folk, rock and also jazz. And since I'm talking about great female voices from Norway, I also once again have to recommend the folk rock band Gåte and their song "Hemnarsverdet" (The Sword of Revenge) from their current (acoustic) album "Nord": th-cam.com/video/DkHFJN7qBfU/w-d-xo.html
    As something extra special for Ginger, a cover of Shipping Up to Bosten and Enter Sandman performed by three stunning female musicians on bagpipes: th-cam.com/video/HXm8JdC4k4c/w-d-xo.html

    i have to say that i'm not a big fan of faun because apart from the instrumentation it reminds me too much on "german schlager". the vocals to soft and not "nordic" enough. i have the feeling of musicians dressed like vikings instead of vikings making music, you know?
    do you know the band "garmana", they have a cool song called "herr mannelig". that lady is rolling the r like no other. check it out!

      A Garmarna-clip with nearly 25 million views? What sorcery is this? I still remember when I first saw them live in 1996 playing in front of about 40 people and the stage was so small that they hardly could move around. I fully second your recommendation of "Herr Mannelig", though they also have some other pretty dark and "nordic" sounding songs - especially the title-track of their third album "Vedergällningen" and "Nio år" from the same album are highly recommendable in this regard. And Emma Härdelin's voice is really impressive. Even though they were not the first, I think they can be considered pioneers of Scandinavian folk rock and have been quite influential
