- A quick tutorial on some starting tips to spotting fake Levis Jeans. Please note that these tips are to get you started. You should also use your intuition. If something doesn't seem right (e.g. an offset label, suspect stitching, etc) then the chances are it is a fake as the Levis jeans do go through rigorous quality inspection. There will be some examples where rules that I have mentioned don't apply. As an example, the Levis 512 Jeans which I own and bought from a Levi's factory outlet store (these were 'seconds' or 'mis-sized' jeans) do not have stamps on the buttons. They do however still have the factory number on the label.

Nice one. I was looking at a good fake pair of 501XX selvedge on ebay, wondering if they were fake. Didn't notice the restitching around the red tab until I watched this video. Thanks for saving me €50! They were very good fakes though, had the red stitching on the inside and everything..
Yes, if I translated what you said properly, then you are right. On the machine when they change over the cartridge with the trademark labels the first one of the batch is just "r" on it's own.
What about white tab instead of red? I found two real nice corduroy trucker jacket but one had a red and one white.

My 501s have the red tag with the r trademark on both sides, no levis, is it fake?
If I have on the patch on the back of the jeans : "501" without the ® they are fake?
Would the same apply for 711 Skinny jeans for ladies?
My zipper doesn't have a stanped levis logo but the hole in the metal is shaped like the levi logo.
Thanks. I gues that in my jeans only the number in the ribit is the same as the one in the label. Levis makes jeans in so many places that by now all of them are fakes.
How about white tags? I had a pair with a black print on a white tab instead of a red one. I had a feeling they were fake because for one, they didn't last long, they weren't denim either--rather velvet-ish?, and the sizing was not really the standard one. they should've been w25 but it said they were W26. I thought, well maybe that's because I put on some weight but turns out that w26 is still my size.

I check as your instruction. Everything is correct except the zipper doesn't have any LEVI'S Mark on it but at zipper back has " YKK 5YG" mark.

Kindly advise as i just got a pair of 501 from levis store in egypt and the back of the top button has a number but i found that it doesn't match with the care label inside but everything else is good and authentic i just wanna knw as it irritating me
If it all looks good then you're probably OK. To be honest it's fairly obvious when the jeans don't match that quality of the originals that they are fake. If you think they do then they're likely genuine.

I bought a 504 levis for 65euros. I don't know how long it will last, but for sure this jean fits perfectly and feels better than my 20-30 euros jeans
The big label patch at the back can be dark brown, red, white , black even yellow some times depend on the style, now days levis have many colored patched so take note they are not fake.

In the early 70s, pre shrunk denim was introduced end the tab was changed from red to orange and style numbers started with a '6'. Levi's hit a bad time with so much competition and started to advertise more. The huge success of the advert in the launderette where Nick Cayman was wearing red tab 501s soon made them re introduce the red tab and the orange tab was phased out. The white tab (actually light grey) was the 'silver tab range, but they were also quite short lived.

I got an old pair of Levis, probably 90's, which I do not know its model. The pair got copper rivets on the outside and silver on the inside. Overall the pair looks very authentic, is this an indication that it is fake? Does any Levis model have this?

A lot of Levi's rivets had an aluminium inner section at that time. If they have lasted this long I would imagine that they are genuine.
Genuine Levis are still made like that. The inside portion of the rivet is supposed to be silver on many if not all styles, though I'm not sure if that was true 100 years ago.
+Stinky Cheese. Levi's changed from the solid copper rivets to the aluminium inner segment some time in the early 60s. It is a 'give away' to people who claim that their jeans date back to the 40s. a short while later, they replaced the concealed rivets on the back pockets with a bar-tack. Originally the rivets were through to the outside of the back pocket, but they were concealed under the first thickness of denim because they scratched wood chairs and stools, causing some bar owners not to allow people wearing them in their establishments.

I got that heart attack too yesterday. I did some research and the Levi's website said that a certain percentage of the jeans will have a blank tab with just the registered R on it.
From the website: "It’s therefore necessary to produce a certain percentage of Levi’s® products with a plain Tab with only the ® symbol on it. This shows that LS&Co. owns trademark rights in the Tab itself, not just the Levi’s® wording trademark".
Some lines will use white tabs but 501's should always use red tabs. You can usually tell fake tabs a mile off from their stitching, positioning, quality etc.

My costliest Jean is a pair of Levis, but the quality sucks. In about a year time it started fraying in the crotch area and it's a complete hollow now down there.

Many of the "Fake" Levis come off the same factory line as the original ... No Levis are made here in the U.S. anymore .... The factory will run off "original" Levis and then run off the exact same jeans (The same denim , rivets and stitching) except for some minor differences ... Levis are no longer made in the U.S. .... To bad... Another original that's now made overseas .... And copied overseas in the same factories..... The denim is also a lighter weight denim than was used say 40 years ago ... That's why Levis rear pockets pull away at the top corners ... They didn't used to do that 40 years ago ....

False. When you have fakes there are not just some minor, deliberate differences. It's even the denim itself. If the same Levi factory makes something a little different it's still a Levi jean if it reads Levis on it. In other words you have a misconception of how the global market works. With small manufacturers they may contract out manufacturing to a larger company who makes a variety of things, but when you have a large company who consumes 100% of the manufacturing capability of a factory and several of them, the factory is ALWAYS making their genuine product, there is no down time or after hours where they could sneakily make something else. They're cranking out the genuine product as fast as they can, which unfortunately isn't always the best quality control for the consumer.

Also when people are trying to identify if they have fakes they don't want to see other fakes as that just adds to the confusion. They need to see how they should look.

Thanks for the vid! I wore 501s in the seventies. Are 501s today made exactly the same as they were then? Same fabric, etc? Or would i have to buy vintage to get those 70's jeans? I've lost weight and down from a 42" waist to a 38 and my goal is to get to a 36" or even 34" waist and then treat myself to some 501's. Hoping you can set me right. Thanks!
I think you might wanna go for the pre 2000 Levi's. Today's Levi's are just low quality bs in my opinion.
I was always a Levi's guy... about 10 yrs ago I bought a pair of Levi shorts at JCP that cost about $40... I bought a pair of WalMart denim shorts about the same time... the Levi back pocket were worn and falling off within a year... the wall Mart ones listed 3 or 4 yrs.. I hate WalMart but Levi's are now made overseas just like the WalMart crap... the WalMart shorts were about $15... just saying...

I can remember my younger days when we used to use our Levi's to stub cigarettes out if we needed to get rid of them in a hurry. A few months ago, one of my friends got a hole in his Levi's just from the ember falling off his cigarette.

Well, they're not. They still use mostly the same techniques and materials that they always used which is why the price of Levis is much higher than most other brands and the quality is still world renowned.

A lot of 'so called' fakes simply come out of the back door of the companies contracted all over the world to produce Levi's jeans. The company try to prevent this by supplying the buttons and rivets, so the only REALLY fake part of the jeans will be the buttons and rivets.
Levi's are so expensive these days. I remember when they used to cost forty bucks…then fifty…then sixty…now seventy….and the quality used to be better. But they do look awesome. On men and women.
Lollipopfop , in the 70's when I was a kid, my Mother got mad at me for wanting Levi's @ $19 a pair. She only had $20 to buy all my school clothes for the whole year. That's when I started buying my own jeans at 10 years old with $1.10 an hour from farm money...lol

If I did have a pair of fakes to show you, I wouldn't be stupid enough to announce it to the world, Levi's, and the police with video evidence that I was supporting crime. The quality of the rivets certainly have a bearing on authenticity. I've seen and worn a lot of Levis and I've never seen any without the S.F.& Co. design. I've also seen a lot of fakes and I can more often than not immediately detect a fake by the quality of the design punched on the rivets and also usually the material used.

Bad stitching at 4:34 (My wife says!) and they are the genuine pair!
The stitching is in line with the edge of the jeans. The frayed part around the corner is due to wear & tear. I wore that pair every day at work for about 3 years.

The plain tabs are printed like that because of trademark issues and its one in every ten not a hundred. Its on levis site.
Thirty years ago you didn't need to look at what metal the rivet was, you could tell by the weight of the denim. Now Levi 501s seem to be made out of the same crap that Matalan make their £5 jeans out of!

your so freakisly wrong at so many place that its not even funny. the printing on the leather tab can be of different color according to the article even silver and it dosnt have to be only black, moreover the leather tab can be of fidderent colors and material as aswell etc. red, multi threads etc. also they can be already worn out if its a stnewashed item. even the rivets can have different embossing and even the waist button can be different like having a star on it etc. street line of 111 222 333 articles. So what if they're fake, people want to buy cheap jeans which fit good...why pay 100$ on a pair when you can buy it for 25$ and still have money for a denim jacket...you pay more for the brand and its advertising than for the product itself.
For one, because the fakes and other generic jeans tend to only last 1/3rd as long. Plus, your numbers are off, almost anywhere you can get the 501's featured in the video for closer to $50 than $100, "IF" you are located in the US or Canada, or even less on sale. Granted you can also get generic jeans for little more than $10 but since people tend to wear jeans for more rugged activites than the average types of pants alternatives, it stands to reason that they should be as durable as reasonably possible because the next more durable option is leather and leather pants are quite a bit more expensive. Well there are some cotton duck fabrics in workwear that are more durable than today's Levi's but they tend to be uncomfortable to wear casually, don't conform to the human body as well so they aren't considered as stylish.

I've always felt that only an idiot would pay for jeans more costly than Levi's. It's usually the girly men with self esteem problems who get all worked up about high priced fashion jeans and even care what pattern they are pre-worn-out to look like from the factory, trying to trick others into thinking they wore them like that from their own efforts.
