When using Red Cedar you must #316 grade stainless steel to fasten and part of the fence. The use of a galvanized brad will lead to significant black stain bleeding in the face of the board, as well as the galvanized brad will actually cause the wood to decay around the brad. Like to see this in one year.
Great example of what a builder will do when they know they are selling the house in a few weeks. Shame to rely on a brush applied sealer when stainless nails are widely available now. I have seen builders of million dollar houses use drywall screws on a nice wood fence. Fasteners are usually something he focuses on. Hopefully he spends the extra
Cabot stain is fantastic also stain your boards before attaching. Seal each cut if you want to protect your fence boards. 5x5 posts stain before putting it in ground you can use roofing product as well roughly 3 feet on the bottom. 5x5 posts would look much better if you grove it 3/4 through the middle then drop in your 1x boards.
Solid build! I just completed a privacy fence for my trash bins. I painted the 4x4’s black and used pocket screws on the horizontal posts so that they were flush with the vertical ones. I like the look, but might have done it the way you did if I could do it over. Thanks for the content!
Can someone please tell me where can I find good deals on composite fences? I live in WA. Also does anyone know which is better Vinyl or composite fence? Thank you
Used ring shank galvanized nails from a nailer, still holds. I prefer stainless screws, but spendy and labor intensive. I’m a DIY person in multiple houses. In two, including the current one, had to replace electric panel and check all connections. In the process, replace all switches and outlets to screw terminals. No power problem and passed inspection.
Thanks for the video. I am in the process of building a fence an 8ft BOB ceder fence. I have a question what do you think of the top cap and the decorative trim under it to be regular pine? The ceder top cap is 4 to 5 times the cost of pine. Treated pine, apparently, likes to bend. What would be the pros and cons of using pine top cap and decorative strips trim? Thanks in advance to all for sharing their knowledge and experience.
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I'm from New Zealand, and though we have a strong tradition of construction and DIY, building product is expensive and we don't seem to have the range that you guys have.
Man that cedar looks great, can't wait for lumber price to go down. If your posts are not below the frostline, be careful about relying on adhesive to hold the fence board since it will probably snap if there is movement instead of allowing some bending like regular fasteners would.
a proper PL premium glued and clamped wood to wood joint will never fail before the wood itself does. IMO he did not use nearly enough adhesive though from the one board he showed
I’m feeling amazing Professor Jeff. I’m doing my best to work smart and stay healthy and focused before our winter here in st Louis Missouri. Hi Matt and crew.
Inspired by your other HomeReno horizontal fence video to install a privacy fence for my mother in law. Finishing it up now with dimensions 24'x58'x'24' @ 5' high using 5/4" PTL decking and CAMO system. Will check out the post caps. Suggestions for a gate design welcome. Thank you for these videos!
It's so crazy how jeff is a celebrity and no one bothers him at his remodeled home or out without no bodyguards..I would love to see a (day in the life) video from him walking into home centers stores..
Happy Thanksgiving! Best channel on TH-cam. They actually answer peoples questions, thousands of them. Thank you! You’ve help me in the past and I will always appreciate you and your channel!
Hey jeff! I remember the "how to install a custom front door" video... and how crappy that area looked outside your house when you bought it. I LOVE the transformation since then, and you're doing great work. I cant wait for the completed farm house tour when you're happy with the renovation.
Freaking amazing, and here I was kind of thinking I'd have to hire it out 😅 To do a whole fence around my property would be pretty intense. Right now it's chain link and I have a few trees in the way. But there's nothing in the main yard, so it could be a matter of cleverly designing a fenced area that doesn't look like junk with the rest of the yard.
I live in Illinois and my house needs some deep renovations. A whole bunch of fixes needs to be done and I can’t think of anyone beat for the job then you. I hope one day it can be done, would be an amazing Christmas present 🙏🏾
Nice job! This project is a definite DYIer for women who can't lift the concrete bags for the posts. I wish you would have shown the miter cut and placement. I thought I heard mention of 1/16th of an inch?? What would happen if you didn't utilize spacing at all? And why didn't you show us the placement of the 2x4 over the outside of the fence. Did you use 2x4 on the inside for extra structure...did you place them on the outside too for a finished look??
i ripped a 1x4 in 2 and used that as a vertical piece. and yes I added the 2x4 for extra strength as well. you will see the back side of the fence during the fire table videos I am sure. Cheers!
Interesting and creative way to build a horizontal fence. It does look great! Question: if one post has to be reset because of issues with the foam (I am not as confident in it as you are) or if some boards need to be replaced, how feasible will it be when everything is glued together? Thanks.
How will this hold up over time, with brad nails and glue as opposed to screws? Honest question. I live in South Dakota, where we get absolutely WILD winds. Would this method work for me? Or should i just go with screws?
This past summer, bought expensive fresh cut cedar, supposedly 1” and stored in the garage under plastic so it didn’t dry. Once I mounted, did not leave space between vertical boards except small correction for level. Still in the wet season in Oregon, and gaps are easily 1/8+, so I agree, don’t gap cedar unless dry. 2020 was a very expensive time to buy premium cedar. $1.5k for 100ft. I won’t buy the crap at box stores. I bought the same cedar 12 years ago for the rest of the fence, and it probably has 10 yrs life left, no treatment. However, a couple of posts may need replacement. Did three rails of cedar stringers, and 2x6 top cap. Maybe that helps? Very wet climate here.
Wish you would have shown or give into more details on the 2x4s that are between the posts. Looks like you have them going same height as the posts but are they touching ground or sitting above ground?
Always love the videos. You've inspired me to do things I'd never thought were possible. There wasn't a whole lot of technical tips needed in this build but any advice or tips and tricks you might have are worth their weight in gold
BTW, when you said to use PL Premium I made sure to note whether or not you were using the 3X or the 8X since you didn't specify. 8X confirmed! BTW, ever since I watched a product review by Project Farm (great youtube channel BTW and a must subscribe), all I've ever bought since were the PL Premium products. I'll never buy Liquid Nails again ... great name but that stuff is just junk! Another thing of note, I was thinking the perfect free spacers one could use are the free paint stirrers as they are 1/8" thick and they'd lay down flat perfectly. Another great video Jeff. The fence came out beautiful!
Looking to do a side gate at my house and the local big orange only has bog standard western red cedar (doesn't say anything about kiln dried) and I'm not sure if I should let it sit out for a week or two just to be safe... Another issue I'm running into is advise for installing them. Prestaining seems to be highly recommended but not sure. Some are saying to add a spacer and others suggest building them tight next to each other…I'm kind of at a loss and stalled out on the project until I can figure out what to do.
Quick question, do you leave the pencil sized gap for looks or because you don't want the boards to be touching for some reason? I'm about to build a horizontal fence with Mangaris boards and want there to be no gap between them. That's ok right?
wonder about the sturdiness with the posts seemingly 8" apart. you did mention likely adding 2" x 4" in between the posts but unfortunately it wasn't shown if it was done. ...1- does it have a 2x4 running in between and if so is this method close to as sturdy as a vertical fence with 2 or 3 horizontal 2x4 used as a place to NAIL the fence boards onto it??
Jeff, great video and outstanding fence! I too use Osmo for smaller projects, never thought of the benefits of using it for larger projects. Good Choice!
Fence looks nice.. Galvanized nails will bleed black stain when used in cedar, you know that (you should) I know that.. An adhesive will never hold as well as long and strong as deck screws.

Special bit of fencing that, love the cedar look, not loving the post lights though, look cheap alongside the cedar, maybe side mounting would look better. It’s like having a $1 ornament on top of a luxurious Christmas tree.
What foam did you use to set the post? I’m thinking if terracing a small space with wood as opposed to brick. I stay in So Cal and we don’t get much rain (a little bit of freezing since I’m in the mountains). What do you think? The wall would be no more than 4 ft high and is just to clean up the front of my house not to hold dirt back.

What was the coating you used on the cedar? I’ve looked in the links in the description but I did not find it.

Part of fence maintenance is replacing individual boards that break/crack, that's why I prefer screws. Easy to pop one board off and put a new one on.
Ever tried lapping the cedar boards about an inch? Works best with some type of fence topper.
