Back in the days of the SMS and early days of the Genesis, SEGA only allowed 3 months for development of games. Any longer was considered too risky. This game feels like a Master System game with slightly better graphics and sound. Had they given this game longer, playtested more, and tightened up the controls, it could have been more akin to the quality of Miracle World. Luckily Shinobi World happened 3 years later and showed the world how good an Alex Kidd game could really be. Shame he never got more games afterward for the most part.
I had to skip the parts where Alex uses the helicopter because the music that plays is sooo bad. I can hardly believe I thought this game was so cool when I first played it on the Sega Genesis as a kid. For some reason my memory make me think the music in general was better. Except for the helicopter music, it was painful back then, too.
story: alex kidd's dad is so annyoed by his sons he staged his death, fled to another planet and the pesky son still finds him, despite his dad having a whole castle prepared with deadly traps. alex, you don't really pick up quickly...
Two Sega collections, PS2 and PS3, and a boxed US copy for my Genesis, not sure why I decided I needed a boxed copy of this game. I really find it a poor game, any wonder why Sega quietly retired Alex, and moved on to a blue hedgehog.
