The eco-friendly technology saving your old t-shirts from landfill - BBC News

  • If you've ever bought a band t-shirt at a gig or a printed shirt from a fashion retailer, its likely it has been made with a chemical dye or a print.
    These processes make it incredibly hard for them to be recycled, which means it will likely end up at landfill after you've finished with it, adding to the 22 million tonnes of textile waste produced each year.
    But eco-friendly tech being developed in Sweden could see a new era of reusable printed shirts, erasing old logos and replacing them with something new.

    Landfill! Sounds like a London problem! Most people wear their t shirts till they’re worn out and then used for dusters!

    I'm an old retired guy with a good income, but in order to reduce my impact on the planet I shop for a lot of my clothes at thrift stores particularly non-profits that use the money to benefit the community. Here in the U.S. many people buy clothes and wear them only a few times before donating them so there is a lot of high quality clothing just waiting for a new owner. We must do much, much more recycle and reuse if we are going to strive for sustainability. Everyone must do their part.

    One one hand it is a great idea, on the other it is much cheaper for companies such as H&M or Zara to dispose of unsold garments and produce new ones than to recycle every individual piece.

      I live in Puerto rico and all the clothes that come here to the stores are returns and old stock, same with the food. Gordon ramsey said once theres a customer food rating and a warehouse rating, we get the warehouse b here, know now that back in the uk we did indeed get a grade. Is this the same for the clothing world? Is there a mass of clothes that dont even make it to the shelves before being shipped elsewhere...i think there is.

    Stuck with band t shirts..never heard of eBay.. or charity shops..that doesn't cost anything to recycle and no chemicals. Duh.

    But surely the point is - if I buy the t-shirt at a concert or festival - the part I want to keep is the logo, not the t-shirt.

    One chemical to solve the problem of another chemical and then a few years later, the chemical will show some other bad effect; this is the base of human intelligent! It would be easier just put 100% tax on cloth purchase after a “necessary limit”

      This! Dihydrogen monoxide (a chemical widely used in manufacturing clothes) is so abundant that it was found in the liver of 100% of people studied. It kills thousands of people each year but the fashion industry insists on using 300,000 KG of it in each shirt they produce. It evaporates quickly but trace amounts can still be found in all clothing.

    This basic concept of excess waste isn’t new. I am & many others keep their clothes and repurpose them, logos or not. They last longer, helps with excess waste, and can be repurposed again. If they can’t be repurposed into clothes, they are saved for quilting or making blankets with.

    Well, this is fine... but I already use my clothing all the way to the point they become rags. xD And then I use most of it as cleaning cloths.
    Stuff that doesn't fit anymore I give it all away. No shortage of demand if you know a church that works with homeless and poor...
    Kinda crazy that you'd need tech to remove paints and logos just to recycle them, fast fashion is a modern disease.

    So, it's not really saving t-shirts from the landfill if the t-shirt is worn out, (threadbare; full of snags & holes), it's still going to the landfill. This is bogus for their 'claim of saving t-shirts from the landfill'. *BOGUS* Very disappointing. Very.

    What a first world problem. You could wear old T-shirt with any symbols at home or sleep with it on, and then use it for wiping dust, and after its useful life throw it in a heating furnace. So instead of producing new cotton fabric, they will now make chemicals.

    • @saini1976
      @saini1976 ปีที่แล้ว

      Burning the old T-shirts might be illegal under environmental laws, and the chemicals in the designs could become pollutants once burned and released to the atmosphere.

    • @j7ndominica051
      @j7ndominica051 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, but you have one t-shirt a month or less, not a truckful of them. It will return to environment anyway if you wore it to dust or wiped floors with it. The chemicals can't be so bad if they are meant to be touched, or rinsed in hot water.

    • @saini1976
      @saini1976 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@j7ndominica051 many chemicals are perfectly safe in T-shirt designs but when burned, release toxic gases. Most first-world counties have abolished waste incinerators or are phasing them out because it’s not possible to filter out things that would release toxins.

    Today I wake up to three new video uploads on YT from Bloomberg Markets and Finance. One of which is 'breaking news' about the US senate doing something with a bill about gay marriage.
    I leave the house and go to the cash machine. I stand through three adverts about Barclays corporate commitments for domestic abuse, diversity and climate before I'm allowed my money.
    I walk into Waitrose and I'm immediately greeted with a huge rainbow and statement about their commitment to LGBTQ issues.
    All I want is a BLT sandwich....
    I log on the work computer and I'm greeted with emails informing me the 'we are beginning 16 days of activism' about violence towards females and an invitation to an event about gaslighting.
    All this before 9am.
    I guess this is my life now....
