  • Can you get a decent cup of decaf coffee? What are the environmental and economic costs of caffeine extraction?

A former-coffee lover goes on the hunt for a decent cup without the buzz, and discovers why it's so hard to get flavour without a fix.
Taste is not the only challenge when it comes to taking the bounce out of a bean. The environmental and economic costs of decaf coffee soon add up, meaning a cup may carry a higher carbon footprint and be made with cheaper beans than the full-blooded stuff. Could a caffeine free coffee plant hold all the answers? A botanist explains why finding a suitable candidate is an unpalatable challenge.
Or are we being over sensitive? A scientist explains why some of us react badly to caffeine, whereas others can fall into a slumber after two espressos.

I am trying the effectiveness of using key verbs to retell. To do so, I write down key verbs here before i figure out how to play this episode background. Key verbs: decaffeinate/ingest/agitate/neck/stare at/wonder/commiserate/insist/scoff/stigmatise/decaf/layer/price/process/age/ensue/deploy/sowcialise/metabolise/stimulate/irritate/hack/activate/slash/extract/preserve/enlarge/pull out of/remove/disclose/capture/recognize/reappear/exceed..allowance

'hard to get the flavour without the fix'
I question that. Most coffee doesn't live up to the dream, whether caffeinated or not.

I love coffee- strong and black, but cannot handle all of the caffeine. Make 1 part decaffinate to 6 or 8 part regular. Get dark roasted for max favor. If have regular, need to plan for a meal that dissipates the effects of caffeine.

That's really interesting. So you think you can't get the strong flavour you want without the fix?

@@BBCWorldService I love the flavor of strong coffee- not necessarily espresso. Some coffees rank their coffee so you know the strength. There are not as many decaffinated ones. There is only one Swiss water process variety on the shelf (where I live) and it does not have a lot of flavor. I brew my coffee on stovetop so I do get maximum flavor from coffee. Quality coffee can be expensive and therefore not in my budget. Coffee in most fast-food and resuramts have gone downhill in favor in past 20 to 30 years. So much so I no longer want to stop in for a cup, a primary reason/rank for ever stopping at a place.

@@jokich6379 Sounds like you're after a strong, inexpensive, quality decaf coffee that you haven't been able to find yet. Brewing your own coffee on your stove sounds delicious!

@@BBCWorldService 😉Yes. Good coffee can get 15.00 to 25.00. I want some caffeine because wakes me up and is energizing. Use to drink full strength but cannot handle it as well so I go for quantity instead of the allotted 2 to 3 cups. Tried brewing Turkish style coffee but bit more more messy with straining out grounds and the excess oils that supposedly can elevate cholesterol.

Remove coins, medal, bullets... What?! So that's why you do not feel the caffeine kick.
