It's funny that you say Atarashii Gakko is your first Idol group, because they're more like an Anti-Idol group than a typical one.

Wouldn't say no to more AG reactions. No matter what you pick next, you'll find they're music is pretty diverse.

Atarashii Gakko No Leaders (New School Leaders) was formed in 2015 by Asobisytem. Mizyu (the one with two ponytails) was already on their books as she was a back up dancer to Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and they brought in Rin, Kanon and Suzuka to join her. They do all their own choreography and also create dances for other groups. They have some of the most original choreo I've seen from an idol group. In fact they are almost an anti-idol group as their motto is "With personality and freedom I'm going to stick out" and they sing about challenging themes and have appeared at Pride events and do some pretty avant garde art projects. In 2020/21 they joined 88rising to break into the US market and have had some success getting millions of YT views and doing some concerts in California. They recently broke out on TikTok in Japan with Otona Blue which is quite an old song and this First Take version is closing in on 30M views.
Otona Blue (Adult Blue, pronounced as Otona buru by Suzuka which means to act like an adult) is about "teenage awakening" ie the awareness of desire in others and their own desire to grow up and experience adult emotions. AG wrote the lyrics themselves when they were younger and I think it's an honest expression of their feelings as they approached adulthood, which makes people uncomfortable. But AG never shy away from difficult subjects. They actually cut out some of the more explicit "phallic" bits of the dance and introduced a mime of a flower opening with a surprised look to go with their coquettish dancing. Their music is influenced by Showa era pop, Beastie Boys and jazz.
Another teenage angst song is "Nai Nai Nai".

and check out their latest song "Suki Lie" which is about romantic betrayal and also the free jazz influenced "SNS24"

I usually do a bit more technical reactions but I was shocked (still am 😂), couldn't help but to enjoy and be blown away by the insanity!
What was your reaction when you first discovered Atarashii Gakko?

Jazz, hip-hop, rock, pop, electronic, rap, etc. They do it all, and have a dance to go along with it. Plus, they have personality for days! They even have a song about a ghost, Hanako, that haunts a girls bathroom. I think you will enjoy the ride AG will take you on if you let them.

They are a lot of fun. Most of their songs sound very vintage 70's acid jazz, 80's pop, 90's rock & hip hop, 00's brit rock. Music is great and their presence is great. I think they are kind of known as anti-idols, they are idols but kind of turning it upside down.

I love AG and am a huge metal fan. They are just a blast and have huge personality and actually tackle some important topics. It is hard to box them in they mix pop, jazz, hard rock and hip hop depending on the song. They are not really idol they are more anti-idol. Pick about anything and it is a fun watch though I love Koi Geba (mv) as Suzuka just last year said it was the best place to start your journey into them.

they call their group "dance vocal unit" recently, and was "dance and performance group" before joining 88rising.

I'm also deep into Metal (Speed, Thrash, Metalcore, Hardcore Punk), 57 yo, but what japanese artists are offering, makes my old heart melt. All female Metal/Rock bands like Lovebites, Band Maid, Nemophila, Hanabie have opened the japanese universe to me. And Atarashi Gakko is something outstanding too!

@@DeeDee-eb6fe I have to credit Babymetal as my 1st Japanese act to open that door for me. I mean I rambler jamming Loudness in the 80’s (56 myself) but nothing since. Babymetal lead to Mary’s Blood then Bridear and then the exact same list as yours.
