This live version performed for healing and raising fund for victims after 9/11 soars way past the studio version in my opinion. Especially the way the band and back up singers switched out the chorus with the hallelujah chant! So much energy vs the recorded version that sounds very restricted. You can tell this band was meant to be heard LIVE!
This is undoubtedly the best version of Walk On. I love how they combine the two songs, and the hallelujahs at the end hit different. Pure perfection! 4:09
i remember the somberness. we were all just so shocked to our core that something on that scale could occur. when i heard him say 'hello from London' i knew the world deeply pitied us & their hearts were with us. was such a comfort at the time
Only people who remember the times can understand how powerful this performance was. Say what you want about Bono and his ego, but U2 and Bono love the USA, and they followed it up with a killer performance @ the February Super Bowl only a few months later. Right before he left the stage, he revealed the lining of his leather jacket: An American flag.
I'm from just down the road from the places they grew up in dublin and I have ti say, that was a pretty badass moment, especially considering the climate...that was a time where a.erica was the promised land for us irish and a lot of the world...its hard to figure a y one thing that went wrong, when did we all become so divided,so hateful of our own culture...even bono now is kinda ghey
Beautifal song and so True at this moment . I hope someday the pain stops and people can be in peace no matter what color ore relegion you have. Life is a gift please love and peace❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I haven't seen this in over 20 years! I remember the second I saw Bono with a guitar and dressed somberly that we were not going to have his usual "Hey Look at Me" performance. And his mentioning his wife in the coda is as touching now as it was then..
A couple of things about this performance. 1) When Bono says,"Hello from London" he was breaking one of the biggest rules of appearing on this telethon which was not revealing where the performers were at because of security measures. No big deal, I just thought I'd mention it. 2) I was a U-2 fan back in the 80's but became disillusioned by their change in musical direction in the 90's. When I heard this version of Walk On, I thought,"They're finally back."
The studio was at BBC Television Centre. I think the reason U2 was in London as due to a double booking situation when U2 was on Top Of The Pops on that day too. It's was 2am when this performance went out.
Yes, that's the TOTP set at the time (You can see the video screen behind them) but obviously they removed the TOTP logos. They won't be at TVC though, from Nov 91 to Oct 2001 TOTP wasn't broadcast from TVC. So I think this was filmed at the Riverside studios.
Sometimes, We Forget To Let Go ..But however Hard or Hurtful It May Be, If you want to move forward with your life, we have to swallow A Bitter Pill Of Life..And Walk On

saw ground zero two weeks after the attack. It was so quiet, almost kind of an eeiry silence. It was unforgettable. Didn't cry or even fully process it for about 5 yrs. When it hit me in 2006, l recalled a snipert l watched from a TV program that had sound. What sounded like shots firing was actually New Yorkers jumping to their death after being trapped above the floors where the first place hit. They choose to commit suicide instead of burning alive. It was a day of such pure evil. Those towers were built way too high!
I don't know if they realize it but singing hallelujah at the end was a powerful choice..in the Hebrew Bible it means " praise god" and Christians use it too. They are singing it with almost joy in their hearts...the exact opposite of how those animals were bastardizing islam by saying " Allahu Akbar" while killing people
I didn't know that he was in this video. The same Dave Stewart who co-wrote "Don't Come Around Here No More" with Tom Petty. He's the one in the dark glasses
Nearly 20 years later and this powerful performance hits me in the feels like the first time I saw it on TV after 9/11.

Absolutely one of the best versions they ever did.
❤
They did this at 2am in London they all look so tired but give off so much energy this is why U2 is my favourite band for life
Yeah they did it twice 2 a version for top of pops for the single walk on
This is undoubtedly the best version of Walk On. I love how they combine the two songs, and the hallelujahs at the end hit different. Pure perfection! 4:09

Here I am in 2022 and suddenly started thinking about this version that leads with Peace on Earth. It’s just as beautiful as I remembered ❤🥺
An eternal gift to humanity - thank you guys 🫀
That's how you really know their professionalism but also at the same time the Heart they put in it.
Still hits as hard as it did a week & a half after 9/11. An absolute mecca version! 🤟❤️🤟
R.I.P to EVERYONE that died on that tradgic day :,(
This is the period when they hired Ringo Star as rhythm guitarist.
We need this now.
Beautifal song and so True at this moment . I hope someday the pain stops and people can be in peace no matter what color ore relegion you have. Life is a gift please love and peace❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Remembering this show nearly 18 years later now. Still so moving.
I still get chills when I watch this. So powerful.
The backing vocals are really lovely. Bono's voice sounds like it's on the brink of giving out constantly but what a great performance.
John Doe Bono sings so much better than Tom Araya
Making the hairs in the back of my neck stand up since 2001
Great to see Ringo starr on 2nd guitar! wow. ty 4 vid
It's Dave Stewart from Eurythmics
This is an insanely good performance!
One of my all time favourite performances
Amazing, amazing grace!
Bloody voice of a god!!
Amazing version and if I remember right that was Natalie Imbruglia in the middle of the 3 backup singers.
Yes it was her
And Edge's wife on the right.
Just amazing, they are the greatest!
This was filmed at 2.15am in the morning in a studio in London, and broadcast live on American television.
I remember watching it in the middle of the night as a kid.
I haven't seen this in over 20 years! I remember the second I saw Bono with a guitar and dressed somberly that we were not going to have his usual "Hey Look at Me" performance. And his mentioning his wife in the coda is as touching now as it was then..
A very appropriate song for now. ✌️😒
U2...my heart ❤️ 💙 💜 B man! Walk on...
how could anyone dislike this video?!?!
Incredible power in voice and guitar strings !

London's a pretty big place. He didn't reveal where the studio actually is.
The studio was at BBC Television Centre. I think the reason U2 was in London as due to a double booking situation when U2 was on Top Of The Pops on that day too. It's was 2am when this performance went out.

Hello Natalie Imbruglia!!!
Natalie Imbruglia what a beatiful woman
Walk on 2018
Anyone notice the first 6 seconds are from "I Still Haven't Found..."? I've always noticed that
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Watched the live broadcast 23 years ago…
Fxxking incredible LIVE people that’s how it’s done
The backing vocal looks like Natalie imbruglia
That's Natalie Imbruglia indeed, singing along with The Edge's wife Morleigh Steinberg and a French musician called Medi (Mehdi Parisot)
There are great bands and U2 is definitely one of them, but there will never be The Best Band! Otherwise there would never be great songs!
In those days Natalie Imbruglia and Sharleen Spiteri were the 2 prettiest women in the world.
she will not get home sister - rip
4:25 isn't that Edge's wife?
Yes, it is! It's Morleigh :)

Who is the other guitarist?
It's Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics. th-cam.com/video/qeMFqkcPYcg/w-d-xo.html
I didn't know that he was in this video. The same Dave Stewart who co-wrote "Don't Come Around Here No More" with Tom Petty. He's the one in the dark glasses
Dave Stewart, formerly of Eurythmics.
Still waiting for Bono make a song for the iraq people murdered by the us troops under the false accusation of mass destruction weapons.
Still waiting for Saddam to let the UN inspect for the presence of WMD.
