The guy who doesn't want kids and therefore won't date anyone who wants kids is sensible. Yet, I get the feeling that was a rather bold statement to be making in broad daylight and on camera. That kind of self-knowledge and honesty would be excellent qualities in a spouse.
once i asked my Korean friend, he's 38yrs old male, why are you not married yet?. He replied that, the living cost in Korea is high. for example, marriage cost about 100.000.000 KRW, house mortgage, etc. So, your video is describing the reality that we're all need to be finacialy stable before getting married, and that is true. Weddings can be done more cheaply buy people dont really try to do it. But yes mortgages are crazy high here and you basically need rich parents to help you get a place.
@@VictoriaM2023 Actually, he has a good paid salary. And i think, this "marriage things" happens not only in Korea, but outside Korea as well. Moving out to another country is good but not easy as you think.
Marriage can be dirt cheap but its true the expense of setting up a home and raising kids can be quite high. I think many people feel that if they cannot support themself + a spouse and child they do not want to get married yet, despite the fact that a spouse can probably support his/herself and if they move into where 1 person was already living (as long as niether lives at the parents) you reduce overall living expenses.
I'm Indian, 35 years old and unmarried which is highly unusual in India. I'm athletic and good looking but i chose not to get married because I personally do not want the responsibilities that come with getting married and having children. My life now is peaceful and I'm very happy with no financial stress or worries. I work 9 - 10 months a year and take 2-3 months vacation (without pay) so i can travel and just relax. Life is good!
I've raised 2 kids in the US and another in Korea. The cost of raising a kid in Korea is EXTREMELY high. it cost 3 times more to raise a kid in Korean than the 2 kids I've raised in the US combined.
Koreans are very logical, they think before acting, they prefer to have a better lifestyle than just getting a big responsibility and then not knowing how to resolve it. In my country people don't think about this issues, that's why it's getting overpopulation, poor families have from 4-7 kids and the country keeps getting worse, no education for those kids, and then those kids do the same, it's a cycle.

I wouldn't say they've really thought through it that much, if they don't have children then the population will shrink and the support services for the elderly when they retire will be smaller due to the smaller workforce & consumer base. This will mean they'll need more immigration to maintain their country which is a solution that comes with its own set of social challenges. I agree over population is very bad but a shrinking population is also a problem. Countries should be aiming for a stable population.
I've been so impressed with the views of the Koreans in this vid. They're so realistic and pragmatic. It's nice to see the men understand that women want their career too. And the last guy's thoughts were very insightful.
It's interesting that both men and women had a pretty similar outlook on this issue. While each of them had their own ideas about the details, the general themes were the same, such as issues with income, lack of interest from the government, both men and women not wanting to fulfill their traditional roles in marriage (men - solely responsible for earning money, women - having a child and giving up on her career). This episode is definitely one of the best ones on this channel. It was clear that all participants are knowledgeable about the problem and felt the same frustration.

I personally don't want to have kids until I'm sure that I can give them a good life. Like if my kid tells me he/she wants to learn ballet it would really hurt me if I couldn't say yes because we can't afford school and ballet classes at the same time.
I wanted to learn ballet or tap dance when I was little; my parents said no for that same reason. I'm over it now, being an adult, but I felt they didn't care about letting me do what I wanted to do.
I'm with u ....cz this is now happening to me....as I want to become an engineer....and there are much more things that I want to learn but for financial problems they have now become a obstacle for me ...

Getting married when you're financially & mature enough to do so. Not because society is pressuring you to. Getting married just for the sake of getting married accomplishes nothing. It set you up for a lifetime of misery. Not to mention financial ruin if things don't pan out. I know so many couples that have gotten married to young. Only to end up in divorce shortly after & under a mountain of debt. If kids are part of that equation here. Your setting them up for failure as well. Focus on your education first, getting yourself into a good job or career. Then worry about getting married if you choose to. Getting married regardless of its traditional or cultural context. Will not guarantee you happiness or a good life. So don't feel pressured to do so until you are ready.

@@userfp001 You have no idea about Korea. Koreans were starving after the Korean war just 70 years ago. Most Korean parents grew up in 1 room housing and ate barley rice and kimchi. Most starved. You telling me about purchasing power doesn't mean squat. Korean kids today are well fed and even goto University. My mom graduated Elementary school. I don't need research to tell me that Koreans are living much better now. Nobody is perfect. You telling me who is unfit and fit to be parent is subjective. Nobody was born to be parent but they learn from their parents and so forth.
MilkBlood I have to say that American society is different and does not pressure people into marriage and having kids like Korean and Asian societies do.
I think the young generation, in general, are looking for more experiences, they are aware of the financial problems, they want to get a steady income to live better. Here in Brazil, birth rates just decreases, as you see young ladies having children while they're still in high school and don't have a financial support. In both cases, money is a big problem, but I wish both countries could find a good balance between finances and birth rates.
I'm brazilian annd I can say that this is not totally true.Even thought we have a problem with teenage girls getting pregnant,the numbers are falling in the last decades.Women are having less kids here and getting mariage later.Our population is expected to get older in the next years.Our population now is 210 millions and will grow until reach the number of 250 millions people,then will stop growning and problably will decrease just like Japan
And when teenage girls have children they usually stop in the first one.It's not like 30 years ago that women had kids really young and continued to having babies after the first one.
@Kleco102 you can make a parallel between Brazil with Japan for two reasons.Both populations are aging and both countries does'nt have enough imigrants to help the economy .The diference is that Japan is already a rich country while Brazil have huge problems to solve.The only good side of a aging population here in Brazil is that probably violence will decrease considering that the majority of violents crimes are comitted by teenages and young adults because of hormones
I actually like the non marriage lifestyle. I’m 25 years old and I’m more worried about myself and my career then love. It’s so refreshing to hear some people agree with that. I don’t really seek love but if I find it I would be grateful but if I don’t , Im fine with casual dating without compromising each other. For me, it’s true love or nothing.
My coworker was recently looking for a job(in Korea), she's in her early 30s, and every job rejected her because they assumed she would be having a child in the near future. With zero support for new moms, no wonder nobody wants to have kids.
In europe and the usa its exactly the same thing because they will have to keep paying your salary while you can do nothing and sit at home, its logical they wouldnt want to hire you, you wouldnt want to hire a person like that either.

Its happening everywhere and it makes sense. Animals typically give birth in spring when food is plentiful. They're not going to in winter when conditions are too harsh for the babies. Same thing is happening here. The financial situation of young people is like a winter. It doesn't make sense to have children at this time until we can get to a financial "spring" where resources are easier to obtain.
@hitomi cecilia price of living has increased faster than the increase in wages since the 90s. Three decades on living is less affordable for young people who may work full time jobs and still not be able to buy what they want. Having a family is even less affordable.
I think it boils down to the mindset change and the different expectations of present times. Just after WW2, when people were starting to rebuild their lives from the destruction of war, there were many children born under poor conditions.
@hitomi cecilia Because people didn't have a choice. Without access to birth control, combined with no protections against sexual assault, babies happen. Now if you live in an industrialized country having children is a conscious choice. Anyone with maturity and education is going to assess whether having kids makes sense. Also, in our current economy kids are a liability. When the economy is agriculture based, children actually add to productivity and are good financial investments.

Many people are becoming aware about money. Like the man said " our society is all about money" and that's true. If you don't have enough money you can't do the other things that you want.
Koreans need less pressure from others and older generations telling them they should marry. They should be able to feel comfortable being in long term / life long relationships without the need for marriage. It's an outdated format. Its not so much a problem that they don't want to get married, its that they don't want to have children and 1. marriage is still a requirement in many cultures includin S.Korea for having children 2. Society expects married people to have children. The lack of children will shrinking the population & the economy which will mean fewer support services for the elderly as time goes on. S.Korea's birth rate is 1.3babies/woman, even lower than Japan. Government & businesses in Korea should really look to incentivize women to have more children or they will need to increase immigration in the future.
Same here i'm 22 and I hear the same thing since the day I turned 18. "oh you are 18, you should have children now" (i was just entering third year of High school".. "oh you seem a bit depressed it's because you are not married" etc. And I'm French!

I feel like a lot of these people are not really avoiding marriage, but avoiding the social expectations that come with marriage, like buying a house and having kids. But people can get married without doing any of those things. There are plenty of married couples that don't have kids or don't own a home. And Korea's population problem isn't really because people don't want to get married. It's because they don't want to have kids.
I feel all the opinions given were sincere and valid due to the general economic climate of your average middle class citizen in Korea. That's the reality when faced with the situation where you realistically can't support your partner or child sufficiently
It's not reality, it's the fantasy in the brains of people who think money = life. Koreans and all nations have been surviving for many centuries in relative poverty. Life was always much harder than it is now. But today, in the richest period of human history, people suddenly think they're too poor to have babies? Nope, it's not money, it's the selfish delusion of a spiritually dying culture.
@@kimyoungmi It's a completely different environment and generation though. I really like your response so don't think I'm trying to undermine your response because I'm not. I think it is significantly harder nowadays and not only financially, but that obviously plays a significant role, as well as so many other potential financial burdons that the older generation would never face. It's a complex thing but I'd have to say that the current generation are having to make difficult life decisions based on our current situation, which is pretty much a global issue

Hm you just made a really good point, they do spend a lot of fashion brands but the average salary they said they make around $1,700- $2,300 a month is no wonder they can only afford average apartment, food and such for one person while willing to spend so much on brand clothing at times. Its probably the change in mindsets, back then fashion brand spending was not an important thing but now its more important than apparently spending way less than $1,500 on a date

@@ikev1926 there is one proverb saying today's japan is the korea's ten years later one... which means we korean follow what japanese did earlier I know it is rough and stupid comparision but tendency of demographics is quite similar... more over, the marriage rate and the number of couple which choose to have child keeps decreasing in korea like... japan's birth rate is around 1.4 but korea's is 0.98(birth rate per childbearing age women)

How are young people expected to get married and have children when wages are stagnant. If older people want young people to have kids, pay them more so they can afford it
i agree. To be married you need to have at least a house, and a vehicle. Let alone houses, buying a vehicle and maintaining it is already hard enough financially. Young people would need to get in HUGE debt just to get a normal house which is scaring most people. This is why government needs to extend their help for families.
I find this one interesting. I'm not yet at the age of 30s or so but many of my batchmates are getting married already, some even got married right after graduation and I also have a few friends who got married even before graduation from college so at times, you can just feel the pressure around you. 😅 I don't see anything wrong with being single but when you go out with your friends and they all have dating lives or even worse they're with their partners, then you're alone - so more pressure at that very moment, to most people at least. I actually think that most people think the same like the guy at 4:00 that the society is mostly about money. If you want to date or do anything at all, you'll have to have money. And I also am barely surviving myself that at times, dating is not possible. lol
Here in Greece the average family will pressure you to the limit just to find a person to marry before becoming 30 yrs old...and hence the 50% divorce rate from married couples that just rushed their weddings and had a kid....The amount of kids living with one parent is insane and at the same time heart-breaking...
Your commited or married friends can also be a source of datable females and having someone who knows them and their personality may help you navigate to a solid relationship. I think this is a world phenomenon! I am from a middle eastern family living in Dubai and noticed this among all different nationalities living here. They are declining the marriage idea and more into freestyle dating. I think the financial prssure and concerns about raising kids in this time are main reason. I am surprised though that Korean government are not supporting the youngest to start a family! For a well strong economy like korea and yet not giving citizens child supports is strange..
They are actually doing very costly campaigns for supporting marriage and children, but the issues are never one dimensional, more factors are to blame for low birth rates and people steering clear from marriage. For example, the increased work hours in most Asian countries, with people working even till 10-12 pm means one person does the workload for 2-3 people or more and that translates to hiring less people and higher umeployment rates. So they use people to their max extent till they wear off and have a huge pool of well prepared people to choose from when one of their employees gives up and this is killing off birth rates even more. The people employed are overworked, depressed, stressed, become sick and as a result are not likely to pursue marriage and kids and the younger generations have a harder time finding employment so that means no money or safety to have a family. This is the direction every country is going towards as soon as they start progressing technologically. It will become even worse once AI and robots are going to take over some jobs, because then middle class will most likely dissappear and the gap between rich and poor will become higher, with only the rich being able to reproduce successfully.
Lmao the reality hits me in the face! In most of the kdramas I have seen, Always the male lead is shown as Sa Jangnim (CEO) chaebol kind of a guy living in palatial house with a beautiful garden without worry and woos the poor female lead with his charms rather than the money lulz

I'm not getting married yet, nor dating for that matter, because I haven't found a lady whom I want to spend my entire life (and paycheck) with. Until that one special person comes along, I'm just gonna be happy on my own way.
Something that always shocked me is the amount of Korean women that tell me they don't want to get married. I have many friends who went to Ewha university and I can only think of 1 that was willing to get married. Most of them gave the same reasons as in this video - the impact of marriage on their careers and the expectation to have kids- but another common complaint that I hear is the rigid patriarchy in Korea. They complain that Korean men are stubborn and don't listen to them, that their husbands or in-laws will get angry if they don't quit their jobs once they're married. They told me that it's much harder to get promotions once you're married because Korean companies don't want to promote a woman who needs to take leave for childbirth, or be responsible for the increased healthcare costs. One of my friends summarized that "It's hard enough getting men's respect in a company without being seen as another man's property. They respect foreign women but Korean women must prove themselves." (I'm paraphrasing since her explanation was much longer than that, but this is the gist of it)

Hmm.. I am a korean woman. But I do not agree with the women you met (like you commented above). It is a matter of opinion. And Ewha university is a very representative feminism college in South korea. Regarding most of students in Ewha, who say like that, I have felt that they suffer from a persecution complex, experiencing men they have watched around, even though all korean men are not like what these women tell about. it depends on person.
Korean women are increasingly educated on equal rights and Korean men fail to educate themselves on these issues, hence the decreasing number of women wanting marry

I wish the same, too. One of my uncles was already struggling financially with his 2 daughters, but then has another child. They have knowledge of birth control (condoms at least), how do they still manage to have children!

Man I just turned 28, travelling all around India for the past 2 years, now planing to explore other countries in the coming years. Parents started asking about marriage when I hit 26, I had already made my mind and told then my decision to not get married, they pressured me for 2 years, but I didnt change my decision. As long as you have ₹₹ during your old age, and good staff to look after you. You don't need children. A partner is a different thing. But that doesn't have to happen now. One can take thier time
I kinda agree to them. Young people nowadays are already financially literate. When I was younger i told myself that i wanted to get married and build a family once i graduated college and have a job. But now I'm already 24, a graduate and have a stable job I realized that marrying and building a family it's not that easy as i thought. I'm still single and doesn't have time to date because I'm busy working for a living and there's a lot of things i wanna achieve and experience on my own. For me, Marriage is not just about fantasy being with your love one, fancy ceremonies and a must have status. it's a choice or path you have to think a hundred times. Building a family is really hard. You have to be financially and mentally ready. It's really hard to earn money and make a living so before planning to have kids you to make sure that you have enough funds to raise them and support their needs in order to give them a decent life and good future.
As a Korean, I agree with the idea of "not getting married." Wage are low while most product are high. Even with a low utility cost, we can't afford other things. Maybe marriage can be the solution because then, you can join income, but I guarantee that one day, it will be back to ground zero. The problem also lies on the high standard Korean people have, such as status (financial, social), and multi-culturalism, which is why you heard foreigner expressing the terrible experience they had while living in Korea.
Although I'm not Korean, I agree with you. Standards of living have been increasing, and the wages are extremely low. But in my opinion, (correct me if I'm wrong I'm just saying how I see it) there are some aspects in Korea like the beauty industry and all that put pressure on the youth that they have to look a certain way, and give them products and methods that will 'make' them beautiful/handsome, and they make them super expensive. The youths minds can easily be manipulated, so I think by making them feel that way, they feel obligated to but those products? Idk, its just a thought. But the security deposits are way too high. I hope the government sorts everything out, and by the time I go to Korea for University (hopefully one day!) everything would be better for everyone. South Korea is a beautiful place
I'm Korean and my girlfriend is Japanese, I guess the case of Japan and Korean are different. Most of Japanese girls I met are kind of naive (They can be conquered just by our pure love). My partner accepted me even that I'm just graduated student and unemployed, meanwhile Korean girls are like Chinese women (they are over logical), They always talk about job, money and our salary all the time, I understand Korean women think like that because we Koreans have too high living standard and we think it's normal. My partner said that Most of Japanese guys are unromantic and cold (because of bushido culture) their patriarchal system is much worse than Korea. Japanese women are kind of household assistant for their husband. Cooking, and everything about childcare are full of wife's responsibility. So that Japanese women don't want to get married because of these situations, unromantic, cold husband and strict patriarchal system.

Divorce rates are scary. My parents are divorced. Most of my friends parents are too. That's why I'm not getting married. Seems like a waste of money only to split up a couple years later.
I am married and have 4 kids, money and career are not important to me because when you are 60 years our older the only thing that remains is your family. I don't understand if people put other things before family. So many people die lonely that is so sad. And eventually it brings dead to a whole society if people don't get married and have kids.

If you get married and have children it just gets crazy expensive . It's the same thing that is happening everywhere else right now. 1. More women completing higher education, becoming highly qualified and so becoming more hesitant to submit to the pressure of leaving their job to raise children at home. 2. The financial burden of having children is much greater relative to previous generations. The traditional nuclear family with a single income that was once the norm is barely viable today. 3. The previously unquestioned inherent value of having children is becoming more doubtful to many people. More awareness of what is involved in raising children outside of just the financial costs (a lot of effort and time, to put it lightly) makes some people second-guess whether it is something they wish to dedicate their lives towards, as opposed to working on their own ambitions. 4. Decreasing stigma towards premarital sex and sex for pleasure in general, as well as better sex education and knowledge about sex. Increased use of contraceptives even between long-term partners. It's going to keep going in this trajectory unless governments extend greater assistance to families with children. In the long term the cost of living would need to become more affordable than it is currently. I'm quite cynical about that occurring any time soon.
1. You would have to be insane to have children out of wedlock and without personal financial security in today's individualistic and consumerism oriented climate. What's to guarantee you won't be served divorce papers by the time your child is of school age? If you didn:t complete your education or have no marketable skills, say welcome to poverty and living off of social aid. 2. It is not impossible to have a decent lifestyle with only one average/bellow average monthly income, but think of it this way, you have to lead the most frugal lifestyle possible. Small house, possibly all family sleeping in one bed, eating cheap food, second hand clothes and used till they wear off, cutting all heat and electricity cost, no modern gadgets and technology, no travels and family vacations, pray nobody get's sick and should need medicine, honestly your children might have a disadvantage in school, since it has become pretty popular to pay for extra lessons in subjects your children do bad, it also sucks because you might not be able to invest in retirement funds, which makes you very vulnerable at old age. Death might become the only solution if someone has a low survival rate disease..divorce, depression and suicides due to increased stress are also more common in such households. 3. Children's rights are thankfully represented better these days, but at the same time, society became pretty hostile towards children. A decade ago, the community sense was pretty strong, grandparents, other family members and even neighbours were very involved in child rearing. You could delegate household tasks to children after a certain age and let them play most of the afternoon outside. Now, letting your child outside unsupervised comes with great risk from predators, accidents from all the cars and can be deemed as child neglect, dividing house labors can be deemed as forced child labor, not to mention it has become significantly hard to get them to do some homework, do their bed, leave their computer and go play outside, let alone entrust them with doing the dishes or take care of younger siblings. It's also hard to have your child come home and say they are bullied for not having the latest iPhone, Gucci backpack, money for school trips, projects, utensils, books, cafeteria etc. Depression and suicide rates in young children are teenagers are increasing lately, especially in the age group 10-14 and I suspect it's because of social media and the bullying going on there. Doing manual labor is now seen as degrading, people think they are better off prostituting, stealing, pimping, selling drugs and weapons, scamming rather than clean the streets, wash toilets, work in factories or do brick walling, even though the latter are basically the base of any healthy society. Good luck with getting that PhD when nobody wants to build unis or good luck living healthy when you afford to buy bio food, but the streets are literred and the air and water are polluted. 4. I don't subscribe to traditional views on premarital sex, but birth control was not accompanied with better sexual education and taking responsibility. If we have the emergency pill, why wear a condom right? HIV all times high and even started mutating. What is wrong with taking in your mouth something that has been in someone else vagina or butt? Hello increased rates of throat cancer. The oral birth control is such a great way of enjoying sex without pregnancy, right? Does anyone look up the side effects on liver, kidneys and female organs after long term USE? All of the above are commonly ignored, so I won't even start talking about the psychological effects of having sex outside relationships and emotional bonding - but the full circle the metoo movement made certainly is an indication of the social and psychological effects of irresponsible sex. Women who take time off to have a child often face difficulty returning to work or discrimination with future career advancement and there is sometimes not enough childcare available to allow them to return to work at all. This can reduce a couples income which makes them reluctant to have children.

Raiyyan Khan more important is strong labor unions. In the USA and Europe from the 1940s to 80s unions were strong and their was s partnership between labor and capital. Workers who created the wealth of the corporation negotiated to share in it.. Now there is no partnership. Instead Corporations dictate to both workers and unfortunately to government. I can relate so much. When I was younger I really wanted to get married and have kids but the more I learnt about marriage, childbirth and making a living the more I feel appalled to do it. A good solution in Korea would be to provide more free things like education, or governmental fundings for retired people. Then more people would consider having kids.

The worst thing you can do is get the government into trying to solve YOUR problems. Nothing is free, like education or governmental funding. The Have Nots always want someone else to pay for the free handouts, when nothing is free, and the government sucks at anything they try to do or accomplish.
I feel like it’s here in the States as well. Once people reach a certain age, their is the pressure of settling down. But, many younger people don’t want marriage. I think it’s harder now to find a person that is like a soulmate. Also, many young people have other things to stress about, such as obtaining a good job. Many of us want to continue school or we have other things we want to do. I think in most countries, marriage for young people isn’t only not as important, but it’s also a difficult thing..
In U.S. mostly in the big cities people marry in their thirties. They still want to own a home. Most want to have kids. Homes in big cities are very expensive so they are moving to smaller states or towns where houses are more affordable. Everything is doable if you adjust your expectations.
They are basically being driven by fear, they observe the trauma their friends and colleagues have experienced and try to avoid marriage. It's a rabbit hole that would reapeat over and over again unless the government intervenes to shape the rugged financial issues that's been causing this crisis.

I understand this if you want to have a big wedding, buy a house, and have children. But if it's just marriage, I've seen people marry for free. I think it's actually cheaper to be married than single, because you pay less tax.
I did a survey on why do people have kids and the answers i got was generally: "because kids are sweet", "Because, this is what couples do". Noone needs children nowadays and there are many ways to distract oneself. I do understand why people could want to get married as it create certainty about one's place in a relationship. Kids however, no!
Life is a cycle. As a child, your parents take care of you and then later on down the line, you will become your parents caretaker. As people get older, they become weaker and can no longer take care of themselves, they need help just like a child would. So basically, if you don’t have children, there will be no one to take care of you when you’re old and feeble. Perhaps you’ll end up in a nursing home, but let me tell you, those are the saddest places on earth. I’ll never let my parents end up in one and I hope my future children won’t let me either.

And the elder mentioned about marriage. And hello we are 18. But personally no one is talking about it among people around me.
i think there is also a very traditional way of seeing marriage in asia- women stay home take care of house, kids...basically your dreams end, and its time to stop. and also i think people want to 'marry people they love' not out of requirements
You have a very stereotypical and ignorant view of Asian societies. In Korea and most of East Asia, almost all women go to university and get professional jobs. No one is stopping them from doing so. Korean men are subject to two years of military service during very sensitive and important years of their life and then have to compete with women in the job market who didn't go to military for two years. Also, it's not a bad thing if the women takes care of the house and kids. The reason women were traditionally caretakers is because the men were out working and making money. If the the father is working all day, who is supposed to take care of the children? Please think before saying dumb things.
I think you are partially right. Although many young ppl in their 20s & 30s don't have this view, their parents do. And Korean ppl really value their family and their opinion, so avoiding having to deal with that kind of pressure to have children soon and stay away home is another reason women are choosing not to marry. I have lived in Korea for a few years now and can, without a doubt, say that Korea is still a very sexist and patriarchal society unfortunately. Women are having a hard enough time accomplishing their dreams without this added pressure. Makes sense

i lived in Malaysia , I am 27 now reaching my 30`s ..Living here people treat marriage it is like a must, a trend youngsters such as 20 are getting married ..some of them are not working and their parents said "they figure it by themselves" ironicly, divorce cases here increased , and most of them came from young marriages.. factors to be considered to get married for me is "CAN I PROVIDE FOR MY FAMILY" and "CAN MY FAMILY SURVIVES IF THE PANDEMIC HITS AGAIN" I lost my job for 2 months.. Koreans make good money. Just they think they have to pay for private school lessons for their kids and pay for an expensive university instead of a public university. Many Koreans take huge loans out and gamble on real estate. The problem with Koreans is they all belive they should be rich and can't accept a middle class life. So many single Koreans complain about moeny yet buy luxury clothing items and buy expensive gifts their family to show off. They are always worried what others think of them.
Yeah I'm living in Korea now and I hear these same comments from friends. Korea has lots and lots of societal pressures that they place upon their ppl especially their youth. In order to get a good job that pays a decent amount of money, you have to have went to a top notch school. I definitely agree that everything seems to be about money. Koreans do wedding packages here and of course they're mad expensive. When you attend a wedding of someone you're close to you're expected to give money. I hope my fellow Filipinos have the same mindset. One must be emotionally, psychologically & financially prepared before getting into marriage, having children early & planning a family. Though I may agree that those who have more should take care of the those who have less, the poor are taking advantage of this, creates more babies, get into marriage more than those able and well-off people who pay taxes that benefits more the poor. Living in itself is difficult but to live for and with someone who you should take responsibility puts more pressure. There's nothing wrong with wanting to live as a single especially if you are not capable and ready.
This was very insightful. I also think that the older you get the more you know about yourself and the world that you live in. As a result you have more information with which to consider if a child is someone you want to invite into the world. Plus making room in the life you've designed for yourself and for especially women who have to give up most of it to then center around the child it can be too much. I wanted kids when I was younger but as I got older I realised I was attracted to the fantasy of a family and actually the reality of it is just not for me. I would rather just live my life with peace and freedom.

I love this channel for exposing some realities in countries I know very little about. I'm a big fan of telling it like it is and we should all be aware of what our friends all over the world are experiencing.
I agree a lot with this video. I don't want to get married either... I want to do what I want to do first. If a guy comes along and they're doing something similar to what I'm doing, then we can come together and grow. But I'd want to remain boyfriend & girlfriend. I think the last guy had a good point about the topic at hand: "income issues." I think if Korean people did not have to worry or focus in on funding, they would maybe want to get married and have children. However, I think some Korean people may still want to have an independent life, like some of the folks in this video. I lived in Korea back in the 70s when they had way less wealth . . . and were marrying and having kids (and not the socially mandated "2 kids only") and I think on average they were a happier group of people. Sometimes prosperity can screw up our priorities.
I was born in Korea lived there for 18 years total but grew up in the states and went back. Country is just too small to have a lot more people in it. Wages are low, working hours are hard, Korean girls are very demanding. I think they are right it's probably too late but, it isn't a Korean issue it's a world wide issue. Probably for the best the way we are burning though resources and the environment. We need a great reset as far as amount of people on Earth, which will lead to affordable housing and the cost of goods going down. Wages will go up because of demand. More resources to go around and it is sad but in the end probably for the best.

My korean husband is 34 yo and he has a LOT of friends and older friends who hasn’t gotten married yet, even his older cousins hasn’t too. And most of them don’t even have girl/boyfriend to begin with. When i asked them “are you interest in getting lover or married?” They have similar answers: “이미 사는거 힘들어 혼자” which means “i’m already struggling to live / to keep my own lifestyle let alone married” they tend to worry what life they would lead to after marriage: where would they stay, how’s their career end up to, how can they support their child’s education fee. And they also said it’s hard to find a good partner who hasn’t tend to pick a fight over money and bring all the in laws’s expectation into the partner alone.
I have many Korean students who are mid 40's. They hound me with these questions. They all work for LG or Samsung so money isn't a problem. But they still constantly complain about the burden of family life and are in unhappy marriages. Yet I'm selfish for being happy with just my husband.
I'm korean. In short, I don't know why I should give up my comfortable life and high income for my children and spouses. I don't understand advanced countries with high birthrates(france and usa?).

@@VictoriaM2023 Actually, he has a good paid salary. And i think, this "marriage things" happens not only in Korea, but outside Korea as well. Moving out to another country is good but not easy as you think.
Marriage can be dirt cheap but its true the expense of setting up a home and raising kids can be quite high. I think many people feel that if they cannot support themself + a spouse and child they do not want to get married yet, despite the fact that a spouse can probably support his/herself and if they move into where 1 person was already living (as long as niether lives at the parents) you reduce overall living expenses.
I'm barely surviving by myself. It would be even harder with a wife and children.

I'm Indian, 35 years old and unmarried which is highly unusual in India. I'm athletic and good looking but i chose not to get married because I personally do not want the responsibilities that come with getting married and having children. My life now is peaceful and I'm very happy with no financial stress or worries. I work 9 - 10 months a year and take 2-3 months vacation (without pay) so i can travel and just relax. Life is good!

I've raised 2 kids in the US and another in Korea. The cost of raising a kid in Korea is EXTREMELY high. it cost 3 times more to raise a kid in Korean than the 2 kids I've raised in the US combined.

Brazil if the people want a good education is too high too, so many people here prefer don't want to have kids and the birth rate is low.
Koreans are very logical, they think before acting, they prefer to have a better lifestyle than just getting a big responsibility and then not knowing how to resolve it. In my country people don't think about this issues, that's why it's getting overpopulation, poor families have from 4-7 kids and the country keeps getting worse, no education for those kids, and then those kids do the same, it's a cycle.

I wouldn't say they've really thought through it that much, if they don't have children then the population will shrink and the support services for the elderly when they retire will be smaller due to the smaller workforce & consumer base. This will mean they'll need more immigration to maintain their country which is a solution that comes with its own set of social challenges. I agree over population is very bad but a shrinking population is also a problem. Countries should be aiming for a stable population.

It's interesting that both men and women had a pretty similar outlook on this issue. While each of them had their own ideas about the details, the general themes were the same, such as issues with income, lack of interest from the government, both men and women not wanting to fulfill their traditional roles in marriage (men - solely responsible for earning money, women - having a child and giving up on her career).
This episode is definitely one of the best ones on this channel. It was clear that all participants are knowledgeable about the problem and felt the same frustration.
People talk a lot of trash about gender roles but at the end of the day sticking with them is better and efficient.

I personally don't want to have kids until I'm sure that I can give them a good life. Like if my kid tells me he/she wants to learn ballet it would really hurt me if I couldn't say yes because we can't afford school and ballet classes at the same time.
I wanted to learn ballet or tap dance when I was little; my parents said no for that same reason. I'm over it now, being an adult, but I felt they didn't care about letting me do what I wanted to do.

Getting married when you're financially & mature enough to do so. Not because society is pressuring you to.
Getting married just for the sake of getting married accomplishes nothing. It set you up for a lifetime of misery.
Not to mention financial ruin if things don't pan out. I know so many couples that have gotten married to young.
Only to end up in divorce shortly after & under a mountain of debt. If kids are part of that equation here. Your setting them up for failure as well.
Focus on your education first, getting yourself into a good job or career. Then worry about getting married if you choose to.
Getting married regardless of its traditional or cultural context. Will not guarantee you happiness or a good life. So don't feel pressured to do so until you are ready.
My parents had nothing and they got married. They did alight. Kids these days are spoiled.

I think the young generation, in general, are looking for more experiences, they are aware of the financial problems, they want to get a steady income to live better. Here in Brazil, birth rates just decreases, as you see young ladies having children while they're still in high school and don't have a financial support. In both cases, money is a big problem, but I wish both countries could find a good balance between finances and birth rates.

I'm brazilian annd I can say that this is not totally true.Even thought we have a problem with teenage girls getting pregnant,the numbers are falling in the last decades.Women are having less kids here and getting mariage later.Our population is expected to get older in the next years.Our population now is 210 millions and will grow until reach the number of 250 millions people,then will stop growning and problably will decrease just like Japan
And when teenage girls have children they usually stop in the first one.It's not like 30 years ago that women had kids really young and continued to having babies after the first one.

I actually like the non marriage lifestyle. I’m 25 years old and I’m more worried about myself and my career then love. It’s so refreshing to hear some people agree with that. I don’t really seek love but if I find it I would be grateful but if I don’t , Im fine with casual dating without compromising each other. For me, it’s true love or nothing.

My coworker was recently looking for a job(in Korea), she's in her early 30s, and every job rejected her because they assumed she would be having a child in the near future. With zero support for new moms, no wonder nobody wants to have kids.
In europe and the usa its exactly the same thing because they will have to keep paying your salary while you can do nothing and sit at home, its logical they wouldnt want to hire you, you wouldnt want to hire a person like that either.

Its happening everywhere and it makes sense. Animals typically give birth in spring when food is plentiful. They're not going to in winter when conditions are too harsh for the babies. Same thing is happening here. The financial situation of young people is like a winter. It doesn't make sense to have children at this time until we can get to a financial "spring" where resources are easier to obtain.
@hitomi cecilia price of living has increased faster than the increase in wages since the 90s. Three decades on living is less affordable for young people who may work full time jobs and still not be able to buy what they want. Having a family is even less affordable.
I think it boils down to the mindset change and the different expectations of present times. Just after WW2, when people were starting to rebuild their lives from the destruction of war, there were many children born under poor conditions.

Also, in our current economy kids are a liability. When the economy is agriculture based, children actually add to productivity and are good financial investments.

Koreans need less pressure from others and older generations telling them they should marry. They should be able to feel comfortable being in long term / life long relationships without the need for marriage. It's an outdated format. Its not so much a problem that they don't want to get married, its that they don't want to have children and 1. marriage is still a requirement in many cultures includin S.Korea for having children 2. Society expects married people to have children. The lack of children will shrinking the population & the economy which will mean fewer support services for the elderly as time goes on. S.Korea's birth rate is 1.3babies/woman, even lower than Japan. Government & businesses in Korea should really look to incentivize women to have more children or they will need to increase immigration in the future.

I feel like a lot of these people are not really avoiding marriage, but avoiding the social expectations that come with marriage, like buying a house and having kids. But people can get married without doing any of those things. There are plenty of married couples that don't have kids or don't own a home. And Korea's population problem isn't really because people don't want to get married. It's because they don't want to have kids.
I feel all the opinions given were sincere and valid due to the general economic climate of your average middle class citizen in Korea. That's the reality when faced with the situation where you realistically can't support your partner or child sufficiently

Hm you just made a really good point, they do spend a lot of fashion brands but the average salary they said they make around $1,700- $2,300 a month is no wonder they can only afford average apartment, food and such for one person while willing to spend so much on brand clothing at times. Its probably the change in mindsets, back then fashion brand spending was not an important thing but now its more important than apparently spending way less than $1,500 on a date

i agree. To be married you need to have at least a house, and a vehicle. Let alone houses, buying a vehicle and maintaining it is already hard enough financially. Young people would need to get in HUGE debt just to get a normal house which is scaring most people. This is why government needs to extend their help for families.

I find this one interesting. I'm not yet at the age of 30s or so but many of my batchmates are getting married already, some even got married right after graduation and I also have a few friends who got married even before graduation from college so at times, you can just feel the pressure around you. 😅
I don't see anything wrong with being single but when you go out with your friends and they all have dating lives or even worse they're with their partners, then you're alone - so more pressure at that very moment, to most people at least.
I actually think that most people think the same like the guy at 4:00 that the society is mostly about money. If you want to date or do anything at all, you'll have to have money. And I also am barely surviving myself that at times, dating is not possible. lol
Here in Greece the average family will pressure you to the limit just to find a person to marry before becoming 30 yrs old...and hence the 50% divorce rate from married couples that just rushed their weddings and had a kid....The amount of kids living with one parent is insane and at the same time heart-breaking...

I think this is a world phenomenon! I am from a middle eastern family living in Dubai and noticed this among all different nationalities living here. They are declining the marriage idea and more into freestyle dating. I think the financial prssure and concerns about raising kids in this time are main reason.
I am surprised though that Korean government are not supporting the youngest to start a family! For a well strong economy like korea and yet not giving citizens child supports is strange..

They are actually doing very costly campaigns for supporting marriage and children, but the issues are never one dimensional, more factors are to blame for low birth rates and people steering clear from marriage.
For example, the increased work hours in most Asian countries, with people working even till 10-12 pm means one person does the workload for 2-3 people or more and that translates to hiring less people and higher umeployment rates. So they use people to their max extent till they wear off and have a huge pool of well prepared people to choose from when one of their employees gives up and this is killing off birth rates even more.
The people employed are overworked, depressed, stressed, become sick and as a result are not likely to pursue marriage and kids and the younger generations have a harder time finding employment so that means no money or safety to have a family.
This is the direction every country is going towards as soon as they start progressing technologically. It will become even worse once AI and robots are going to take over some jobs, because then middle class will most likely dissappear and the gap between rich and poor will become higher, with only the rich being able to reproduce successfully.

In most of the kdramas I have seen, Always the male lead is shown as Sa Jangnim (CEO) chaebol kind of a guy living in palatial house with a beautiful garden without worry and woos the poor female lead with his charms rather than the money lulz

Something that always shocked me is the amount of Korean women that tell me they don't want to get married. I have many friends who went to Ewha university and I can only think of 1 that was willing to get married. Most of them gave the same reasons as in this video - the impact of marriage on their careers and the expectation to have kids- but another common complaint that I hear is the rigid patriarchy in Korea. They complain that Korean men are stubborn and don't listen to them, that their husbands or in-laws will get angry if they don't quit their jobs once they're married. They told me that it's much harder to get promotions once you're married because Korean companies don't want to promote a woman who needs to take leave for childbirth, or be responsible for the increased healthcare costs. One of my friends summarized that "It's hard enough getting men's respect in a company without being seen as another man's property. They respect foreign women but Korean women must prove themselves." (I'm paraphrasing since her explanation was much longer than that, but this is the gist of it)

And Ewha university is a very representative feminism college in South korea. Regarding most of students in Ewha, who say like that, I have felt that they suffer from a persecution complex, experiencing men they have watched around, even though all korean men are not like what these women tell about. it depends on person.
Korean women are increasingly educated on equal rights and Korean men fail to educate themselves on these issues, hence the decreasing number of women wanting marry

I kinda agree to them. Young people nowadays are already financially literate. When I was younger i told myself that i wanted to get married and build a family once i graduated college and have a job. But now I'm already 24, a graduate and have a stable job I realized that marrying and building a family it's not that easy as i thought. I'm still single and doesn't have time to date because I'm busy working for a living and there's a lot of things i wanna achieve and experience on my own. For me, Marriage is not just about fantasy being with your love one, fancy ceremonies and a must have status. it's a choice or path you have to think a hundred times. Building a family is really hard. You have to be financially and mentally ready. It's really hard to earn money and make a living so before planning to have kids you to make sure that you have enough funds to raise them and support their needs in order to give them a decent life and good future.
As a Korean, I agree with the idea of "not getting married." Wage are low while most product are high. Even with a low utility cost, we can't afford other things. Maybe marriage can be the solution because then, you can join income, but I guarantee that one day, it will be back to ground zero. The problem also lies on the high standard Korean people have, such as status (financial, social), and multi-culturalism, which is why you heard foreigner expressing the terrible experience they had while living in Korea.

Although I'm not Korean, I agree with you. Standards of living have been increasing, and the wages are extremely low. But in my opinion, (correct me if I'm wrong I'm just saying how I see it) there are some aspects in Korea like the beauty industry and all that put pressure on the youth that they have to look a certain way, and give them products and methods that will 'make' them beautiful/handsome, and they make them super expensive. The youths minds can easily be manipulated, so I think by making them feel that way, they feel obligated to but those products? Idk, its just a thought. But the security deposits are way too high. I'm Korean and my girlfriend is Japanese, I guess the case of Japan and Korean are different. Most of Japanese girls I met are kind of naive (They can be conquered just by our pure love). My partner accepted me even that I'm just graduated student and unemployed, meanwhile Korean girls are like Chinese women (they are over logical), They always talk about job, money and our salary all the time, I understand Korean women think like that because we Koreans have too high living standard and we think it's normal.
My partner said that Most of Japanese guys are unromantic and cold (because of bushido culture) their patriarchal system is much worse than Korea. Japanese women are kind of household assistant for their husband. Cooking, and everything about childcare are full of wife's responsibility. So that Japanese women don't want to get married because of these situations, unromantic, cold husband and strict patriarchal system.

It's the same thing that is happening everywhere else right now.
1. More women completing higher education, becoming highly qualified and so becoming more hesitant to submit to the pressure of leaving their job to raise children at home.
2. The financial burden of having children is much greater relative to previous generations. The traditional nuclear family with a single income that was once the norm is barely viable today.
3. The previously unquestioned inherent value of having children is becoming more doubtful to many people. More awareness of what is involved in raising children outside of just the financial costs (a lot of effort and time, to put it lightly) makes some people second-guess whether it is something they wish to dedicate their lives towards, as opposed to working on their own ambitions.
4. Decreasing stigma towards premarital sex and sex for pleasure in general, as well as better sex education and knowledge about sex. Increased use of contraceptives even between long-term partners.
It's going to keep going in this trajectory unless governments extend greater assistance to families with children. In the long term the cost of living would need to become more affordable than it is currently. I'm quite cynical about that occurring any time soon.

1. You would have to be insane to have children out of wedlock and without personal financial security in today's individualistic and consumerism oriented climate. What's to guarantee you won't be served divorce papers by the time your child is of school age? If you didn:t complete your education or have no marketable skills, say welcome to poverty and living off of social aid.
2. It is not impossible to have a decent lifestyle with only one average/bellow average monthly income, but think of it this way, you have to lead the most frugal lifestyle possible. Small house, possibly all family sleeping in one bed, eating cheap food, second hand clothes and used till they wear off, cutting all heat and electricity cost, no modern gadgets and technology, no travels and family vacations, pray nobody get's sick and should need medicine, honestly your children might have a disadvantage in school, since it has become pretty popular to pay for extra lessons in subjects your children do bad, it also sucks because you might not be able to invest in retirement funds, which makes you very vulnerable at old age. Death might become the only solution if someone has a low survival rate disease..divorce, depression and suicides due to increased stress are also more common in such households.
3. Children's rights are thankfully represented better these days, but at the same time, society became pretty hostile towards children. A decade ago, the community sense was pretty strong, grandparents, other family members and even neighbours were very involved in child rearing. You could delegate household tasks to children after a certain age and let them play most of the afternoon outside. Now, letting your child outside unsupervised comes with great risk from predators, accidents from all the cars and can be deemed as child neglect, dividing house labors can be deemed as forced child labor, not to mention it has become significantly hard to get them to do some homework, do their bed, leave their computer and go play outside, let alone entrust them with doing the dishes or take care of younger siblings.
It's also hard to have your child come home and say they are bullied for not having the latest iPhone, Gucci backpack, money for school trips, projects, utensils, books, cafeteria etc.
Depression and suicide rates in young children are teenagers are increasing lately, especially in the age group 10-14 and I suspect it's because of social media and the bullying going on there.
Doing manual labor is now seen as degrading, people think they are better off prostituting, stealing, pimping, selling drugs and weapons, scamming rather than clean the streets, wash toilets, work in factories or do brick walling, even though the latter are basically the base of any healthy society. Good luck with getting that PhD when nobody wants to build unis or good luck living healthy when you afford to buy bio food, but the streets are literred and the air and water are polluted.
4. I don't subscribe to traditional views on premarital sex, but birth control was not accompanied with better sexual education and taking responsibility. If we have the emergency pill, why wear a condom right? HIV all times high and even started mutating. What is wrong with taking in your mouth something that has been in someone else vagina or butt? Hello increased rates of throat cancer. The oral birth control is such a great way of enjoying sex without pregnancy, right? Does anyone look up the side effects on liver, kidneys and female organs after long term USE?
All of the above are commonly ignored, so I won't even start talking about the psychological effects of having sex outside relationships and emotional bonding - but the full circle the metoo movement made certainly is an indication of the social and psychological effects of irresponsible sex.

I feel like there's a lot of potential with tax credits or reform. If married couples can receive a 3-5 year tax break, it might help them start a family, afford a committed relationship, and be able to focus on earning more income to sustain that lifestyle.

Women who take time off to have a child often face difficulty returning to work or discrimination with future career advancement and there is sometimes not enough childcare available to allow them to return to work at all. I feel like it’s here in the States as well. Once people reach a certain age, their is the pressure of settling down. But, many younger people don’t want marriage. I think it’s harder now to find a person that is like a soulmate. Also, many young people have other things to stress about, such as obtaining a good job. Many of us want to continue school or we have other things we want to do. I think in most countries, marriage for young people isn’t only not as important, but it’s also a difficult thing..
In U.S. mostly in the big cities people marry in their thirties. They still want to own a home. Most want to have kids. Homes in big cities are very expensive so they are moving to smaller states or towns where houses are more affordable. Everything is doable if you adjust your expectations.
They are basically being driven by fear, they observe the trauma their friends and colleagues have experienced and try to avoid marriage. It's a rabbit hole that would reapeat over and over again unless the government intervenes to shape the rugged financial issues that's been causing this crisis.

I did a survey on why do people have kids and the answers i got was generally: "because kids are sweet", "Because, this is what couples do". Noone needs children nowadays and there are many ways to distract oneself.

Life is a cycle. As a child, your parents take care of you and then later on down the line, you will become your parents caretaker. As people get older, they become weaker and can no longer take care of themselves, they need help just like a child would. So basically, if you don’t have children, there will be no one to take care of you when you’re old and feeble. Perhaps you’ll end up in a nursing home, but let me tell you, those are the saddest places on earth. I’ll never let my parents end up in one and I hope my future children won’t let me either.

You have a very stereotypical and ignorant view of Asian societies. In Korea and most of East Asia, almost all women go to university and get professional jobs. No one is stopping them from doing so. Korean men are subject to two years of military service during very sensitive and important years of their life and then have to compete with women in the job market who didn't go to military for two years. Also, it's not a bad thing if the women takes care of the house and kids. The reason women were traditionally caretakers is because the men were out working and making money. If the the father is working all day, who is supposed to take care of the children? Please think before saying dumb things.

I think you are partially right. Although many young ppl in their 20s & 30s don't have this view, their parents do. And Korean ppl really value their family and their opinion, so avoiding having to deal with that kind of pressure to have children soon and stay away home is another reason women are choosing not to marry.
I have lived in Korea for a few years now and can, without a doubt, say that Korea is still a very sexist and patriarchal society unfortunately. Women are having a hard enough time accomplishing their dreams without this added pressure. Makes sense

Koreans make good money. Just they think they have to pay for private school lessons for their kids and pay for an expensive university instead of a public university. Many Koreans take huge loans out and gamble on real estate. The problem with Koreans is they all belive they should be rich and can't accept a middle class life. So many single Koreans complain about moeny yet buy luxury clothing items and buy expensive gifts their family to show off. They are always worried what others think of them.

I hope my fellow Filipinos have the same mindset. One must be emotionally, psychologically & financially prepared before getting into marriage, having children early & planning a family. Though I may agree that those who have more should take care of the those who have less, the poor are taking advantage of this, creates more babies, get into marriage more than those able and well-off people who pay taxes that benefits more the poor. Living in itself is difficult but to live for and with someone who you should take responsibility puts more pressure. There's nothing wrong with wanting to live as a single especially if you are not capable and ready.
This was very insightful. I also think that the older you get the more you know about yourself and the world that you live in. As a result you have more information with which to consider if a child is someone you want to invite into the world. Plus making room in the life you've designed for yourself and for especially women who have to give up most of it to then center around the child it can be too much. I wanted kids when I was younger but as I got older I realised I was attracted to the fantasy of a family and actually the reality of it is just not for me. I would rather just live my life with peace and freedom.

I love this channel for exposing some realities in countries I know very little about. I'm a big fan of telling it like it is and we should all be aware of what our friends all over the world are experiencing.
I agree a lot with this video. I don't want to get married either... I want to do what I want to do first. If a guy comes along and they're doing something similar to what I'm doing, then we can come together and grow. But I'd want to remain boyfriend & girlfriend. We'd of course have a strong commitment, we just wouldn't have a ring on our finger.
I think the last guy had a good point about the topic at hand: "income issues." I think if Korean people did not have to worry or focus in on funding, they would maybe want to get married and have children. However, I think some Korean people may still want to have an independent life, like some of the folks in this video. In America, where I live, I think too that there are people who don't want to have kids due to income issues, simply not wanting to have kids and more.

I lived in Korea back in the 70s when they had way less wealth . . . and were marrying and having kids (and not the socially mandated "2 kids only") and I think on average they were a happier group of people. Sometimes prosperity can screw up our priorities.

I was born in Korea lived there for 18 years total but grew up in the states and went back. Country is just too small to have a lot more people in it. Wages are low, working hours are hard, Korean girls are very demanding. I think they are right it's probably too late but, it isn't a Korean issue it's a world wide issue. Probably for the best the way we are burning though resources and the environment. We need a great reset as far as amount of people on Earth, which will lead to affordable housing and the cost of goods going down. Wages will go up because of demand. More resources to go around and it is sad but in the end probably for the best.

And most of them don’t even have girl/boyfriend to begin with. When i asked them “are you interest in getting lover or married?” They have similar answers: “이미 사는거 힘들어 혼자” which means “i’m already struggling to live / to keep my own lifestyle let alone married” they tend to worry what life they would lead to after marriage: where would they stay, how’s their career end up to, how can they support their child’s education fee. And they also said it’s hard to find a good partner who hasn’t tend to pick a fight over money and bring all the in laws’s expectation into the partner alone.
I have many Korean students who are mid 40's. They hound me with these questions. They all work for LG or Samsung so money isn't a problem. But they still constantly complain about the burden of family life and are in unhappy marriages. Yet I'm selfish for being happy with just my husband.
I would say it is just cherry picking game both of gender don’t want get through the responsibility meanwhile they so much care about their entitle.

I'm korean. In short, I don't know why I should give up my comfortable life and high income for my children and spouses. I don't understand advanced countries with high birthrates(france and usa?).
The countries you mentioned have huge immigration from third world countries so that is why they have high birth rates
