    Annie Hacker is such a brilliant character. She's a caring, supportive wife. But she's also funny, and doesn't take any nonsense. If she was any softer, or harder, she wouldn't be as good a companion for Jim.

      She's his moral compass, constantly reminding him that he's not just another cog in the system and pushing him to do the right things.
      Basically, she's the anti-Humphry.

    I always liked Mrs Hacker she was awesomely sarcastic and delivered a concise view of what the general people thought of politicians and political system.

    Well it is nice that Mrs. Hacker still remembers to complement her husband once in a while. Mr Hacker really isn't a bad person and more moral than most of his peers.

    • @Vizorgz
      @Vizorgz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      He's not a bad person and he does at least *try* to do the moral thing. But he has to contend with an incredibly hostile civil service machine as well as the realities of politics (votes, image, etc.); and ultimately struggles to put his morals above his career.

      He isn't actually.
      He has a sort of moral compass but abandon it readily to get some praise from PM.
      He manipulated people and closed a chemical plant which would have benefitted people.
      He is always concerned about his popularity and votes
      Every action of him is decided by elections.

      @@Vizorgz in one episode he abondened his morality because he didn't want to make PM upset

    Love this series, glad there's so many clips on YT.
    I get the impression that the late 70's, early 80's era really was the ultimate period for quality British comedy. Yes, Minister, Fawlty Towers, etc.
    I also like Mr. Bean and Keeping up Appearances from about a decade later, but they seem to me to be more of a continuation of that trend. Made by people who got educated, skilled and inspired in the aforementioned period.
    Nowadays, the only show I watch on the BBC is Match of the Day. I'll gladly take recommendations on any comedy series from this century, that lives up to the standard of Yes, Minister.

      How about Jeeves and Wooster? Blackadder?

    • @youcanlearnalotfromlydia
      @youcanlearnalotfromlydia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also if you've not seen it The New Statesman is another excellent political sitcom (starring the brilliant Rik Mayall, who you may know from The Young Ones and Blackadder, the series is less well known as it's ITV not the BBC). Also second the other commenter: Blackadder and Jeeves and Wooster both really are excellent (Jeeves is on TH-cam in full, Blackadder can be purchased on TH-cam). Also Old Harry's Game (on BBC Sounds in full, free) has some brilliant political satire and situational comedy.
