Drying Herbs and Flowers the Old Fashioned Way

แชร์

  • Collect a basket of Herbs and Flowers to air-dry for use in wreaths and dried flower arrangements; it's been done this way for centuries . In his video I will show you what an easy and enjoyable process it is. I've hung a rack full in front of a window for illustrations sake, but it is best to keep your bunches out of direct sunlight whilst drying them. A cool dry room is actually the best location to dry your flowers for retaining their color.

That clothes drier is stunning 😍if I ever see one here in rural South Australia I'm grabbing it. I've never worried about the little caterpillars as now we all seem to encourage insects into our lives. I guess it's a sign of a very healthy ecosystem. Thank you Jeri 💚💚

    Hi Jeri. Another beautiful video! Even in the day of TH-cam I still love to collect gardening and cook books. There is something that the touch and smell of a book that the internet still doesn't have. I like to stop in Salvation Army and Goodwill Stores to buy the books. Another great resource for used books is the public library. They have book sales about every 3 or 4 months around here. As well as the gardening and cook books for my collection I buy children's books and donate them to the local free health clinics. Most of the children who go to those clinics are a) from single parent homes, b) don't feel well and what can compare to having your mama read a book to you when you are sick and waiting to see the doctor? and c ) the children are encouraged to take the books home as gifts. I have found that children just naturally LOVE books! Some of the ladies at the DAR National Headquarters in D C have started purchasing and donating children's books to the public health clinics.

    Hi Jeri :) One of my most favorite gardening things to do is drying. I love all the beautiful colors you have gathered, the old standby containers and different ways to hang them...just causes me to sink back into my chair and hopefully the video won't stop!. One thing I've learned through many years of testing is the light coming in from the windows. Even dim light will cause fading :( The more dark and airy the more color that stays. But it is impossible not to put them in such a beautiful setting as you have. Save some for the darkest corner or ventilated closet (I don't use a door I use a curtain) so you can have both for room and for projects. Attics are perfect but not everyone has that option. Don't forget to grow hydrangea's for some of the most beautiful dried flowers. Thank you again and I haven't forgotten your rose-of-sharon seeds...just waiting for the right time to cut and mail them to you. I love how you seize every moment of life...

    This was a beautiful video, I love to see how you make the most of your lovely old house and grounds. I also enjoy the bits of history you include, I did not know that about Zinnias. Many years ago I harvested lilac blooms and had quite a quantity hung from the rafters in the main room, my hubs had to agree they were beautiful there. A couple days later I walk in from a long days work, and was meet with a horrific sour/rotting type smell...so I learned the hard way that lilacs go through a stage of drying that you DON"T want in your house! We got the place aired out, and the lilacs held their color and were great in wreaths. I agree there is something wonderful about the sight of the bundles hanging.

    Can you send me an update to this video? I’m in love with flowers. My grandmother just passed last October and since growing up she made me fall in love with how flowers grow and how to care for them. This year I went crazy seed growing with numerous of flowers and herbs and would love to get more a kick start on drying them. Thank you for this amazing video and happy gardening.

    Oh, I just Love those flowers!, Such a beautiful arrangement and that drying rack, What a find! I dry my herbs by hanging in my pantry except for my rosemary and I freeze that. We love rosemary chicken around here. Good luck with the drying process and Thanks for sharing.

      I'm interested in how you freeze the rosemary, as sprigs? You would think a century old house would have a pantry, but ours doesn't... I wish.

      @@JeriLandersofHopalongHollow Just going back thru your videos and found your reply. We use it for cooking all winter long. Keeps its fragrance. I just cut the rosemary sprigs from around the bottom of the plant. Then wash and wrap in a paper towel and then in a freezer bag and take out as I need it , I haven't tried to dry them as I think they'd just shed the leaves. I do bring my plant in for the winter and place by a window. Southern light.

    Great video Jerry. I picked Zinnea's last year, just popped them in a vase and allowed them to dry naturally, and they looked so beautifully antique. My flowers didn't do well this year due to the severe drought, and even though it is raining now and some flowers are just staring to bloom ( they think it's June). our first frost is right around the corner, so I might not get much. Can't wait to see what you do with them...know it will be beautiful. Good haul on those books!

    Hi Jeri,
    I love your antique cloths drying rack. Even though, I know you don't get as much light in this room as you would like - I thought you might put a covering over the window until your flowers and herbs dry to help with them keeping more color.

    • @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow
      @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true about flowers fading in the window; I put a large grouping in our living room as well, it gets very low light. I'm experimenting at this point.

I hung mine in my home, and some of them started to get mildew on the stem etc. I put the flower heads back outside in brown paper bags for now because I don’t know how to dry them correctly. • @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow

      I just strip the leaves and hang the sunflowers upside-down, from the stem, inside the house. There are certain chemicals that can be used to dry flowers, but I've not used them yet.
