    Clarification needed. As someone else in the comments pointed out to me. Although yes, Christine had a 5.2 litre engine in the movie within the more than 20 cars of her that were used for some of the driving. The engine seen repairing herself and in the photo used, was the 5.7 litre, 350 Cubic Inch Golden Commando, with 305 hp two 4-barrel carburetors. Future references will try to clarify this better as more than one engine was used in production.

    • @robv1139
      @robv1139 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As I understand it the Golden Commando was an option at the time, while the 5.2 290 H.P. could be ordered with two (V-800) and four barrel (Dual Fury). All for 1958. (Rob, UK) BTW isn't that a Plymouth Scamp and not a sedan in the brochure shot?

      @CycolacFan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@robv1139 that’s my understanding too, if you had the money - and perhaps a contact at Chrysler or a dealer hungry for a sale - you could effectively fit out any car, even four-door wagons, with the top performance Fury parts. Same with paint colours, if the assembly plant had access to, say, metallic pink paint they’d paint your car that colour if you paid the extra.

      I know how this Plymouth drives and rides as it was the first car that my Dad's father had: beautiful blue Belvedere with Powerflite 2-speed automatic and power steering. By 6 years old, it was heavily rusted out as Chrysler had serious manufacturing problems. The big trunk was heavily used first for fishing trips in upper Wisconsin with friends and later for building a new house.

    I can understand 'Christine' being number one, but I'm so glad 'The Car' popped up at number 2. Yeah, the end scene is pretty cheesy but the film as a whole had some truly terrifying scenes in it: You don't even see The Car first time in Sherriff Wade's garage, but by God it scares the bejesus out of you when you do. Also when it kills Lauren by flying through her house is a masterpiece of editing; the extended silence that follows as the light bulb swings from the ceiling literally leaves you speechless. Such a shame the film was buried under the media surrounding the box office hits of the time, it's a film that thoroughly deserves its cult status and it is in no way a low-budget-looking 'B' movie. So glad it's been released on Blu-Ray!

    Definitely Duel and The Car are the most memorable for me as simply unique characters. The truck seemed so non-threatening at first, just being a road hog. But as the chase ensued and the speed picked up it took on a whole new image without changing a spot of oil or rust. The Car always looked 'evil-y stylish' to me. Something I would and wouldn't want to ride around in. And the more one realizes it's simplicity having no door handles, key holes, antenna, wipers or latches, the more evil and mysterious it becomes.

    In 1977, my mom treated me and my two sisters to a trip to Disneyland with a side-stop at Universal Studios. This was time before all the amusement park rides. It was just a tram ride through the working lot that ended at the center where the animal show and Frankenstein monster makeup demo took place. There was one more show, but I can't remember what it was. But during the tram ride I remember driving by a dirt parking lot and parked along the fence were several recognizable movie and TV cars, just sitting out in the hot sun and all covered with what looked like months worth of dust. One of those cars was Peter Falk's old jalopy from his Columbo series, but a couple of old cop cars away was the Lincoln from The Car, a movie I had just seen and loved (I was 14). And though the tram's tour guide prattled off the sites (I think this was pre-scripts), no mention was made of the Lincoln, though he did point out Columbo's car. I still have the photos I took of both cars with my little rectangular Kodak Instamatic.

    Christine takes the spot for me as the most beautiful vehicle on this list, and also the one with the most "personality". The car was an actual character, with emotions and feelings, jealous and angry and possessive, and she was evil and vengeful. The car was actually in love with Arnie, and was savagely protective of him, hunting down his bullies, but of course taking it all too far and going overboard on the evil. And what a beautiful car; nobody makes cars like that anymore, the style, chrome, the finish, the sound. While The Car may have been scarier, Christine was a better film.

We saw it 5 times in the 2 weeks that it was in the theater. We read the book it was based on & studied every detail we could learn. For us, "Christine" was boring & stupid, I remember. I was amazed & stoaked to find "The Car" on DVD a few years ago! I found another old favorite as well, picked up a copy of the original "Gone In 60 Seconds" on DVD! Does anyone remember "Freebie & The Bean?" That one held the record for most cars destroyed in a movie until the first "Blues Brothers" movie came out. Thanks for sparking some good memories for me!

    I love Christine, but nothing beats The Car. That big black beast of a '71 Lincoln Continental Mark III is powerful like an old Nascar racer, has huge steel bumpers and rims, semi truck horn, and its INDESTRUCTIBLE. That vehicle inspired me to make a fictional car based on Speed Racer's Mach 5, but is also very similar to The Car in overall build, called the Black Thunder or Mach 7, as my character self's car of choice. how is the JC truck NOT on here?! i'm not a dennis weaver fan by ANY means but "DUEL" is an ok flick of it's type. as CARS go however, 'THE CAR" was the most eerie, sinister & menacing vehicle in that class; it seemed more of an actual creature than the 'goblinhead' truck (& actually it turned out it WAS a demonic 'creature' of some sort). NONE of these other cars are even REMOTELY intimidating or scary. better to have just done a breakdown of the vehicles in all the "mad max" franchises, as they just kept/keep getting better & better with each outing. that modified 'tank' in the last movie was something else.

    This is a truly great channel. Being an Aussie i grew up watching and collecting all these films. The car is my favourite by far. I have the poster, original 1977 magazine print ad, several copies of the film on vhs, dvd and blu ray. I also have the 1:18 scale die cast of the car and i use the horn sound as my phones ringtone. The car, duel and Jaws are kin. All three are universal studios movies and two were done by Spielberg. The wraith, christine and phantasm are also some of my favourites. But what i also like is the black pickup truck from the movie nightmares that bursts out from underground in one scene and chases a priest who has lost his faith . The hearse is another movie that i like with a big black hearse terrorising a woman.

    I once saw either one of the real Cars or an amazing replica from "The Car" when I worked at a particular Country Club back in 1992. It was in the car park as I pulled in on my bicycle. It dawned on me a few days later what that would have made me do in terms of losing my bowels had it been behind me on the long lonely road up to the Club entrance, given the subject matter in the movie. I think its first two kills were cyclists. LOL!!! It was an amazing looking machine. It had a Nitrous Bottle by the dash and everything. Cool interior. Very cool thing to have seen.

    "Christine" and "The Car" stand alone from the rest of the genre, and even from each other. Christine was unique in that it digs into almost every nerds experience in school, and the feelings they felt at some form of revenge being taken out on their bully attackers. Christine satisfies that fantasy in a cool and unique way for the nerd, and a painful and horrible way for the bully.
    The Car is one of those movies that is completely by itself even though it follows the same path as the rest of the genre. The Car takes a much darker road as it digs into the deep seated fears that most refuse to talk about... meeting Satan face to face. When presented with the inevitable nature of sin and the death attached to it, one can only have a view of sheer horror as all of these factors are presented in this one vehicle. It cannot be ignored, it cannot be damaged, it cannot be hurt, it cannot be stopped. The location is even a representation of this as it is a lonely desert town, much like purgatory is viewed, where one has nowhere to hide from their demons and those demons are driving around in a faster car than yours.
    All the movies on the list are good, don't get me wrong, but Christine is a special picture of a reality where the bully gets his, the nerd gets his day in the sun, and everyone learns a valuable lesson in humility...
    The Car on the other hand, well, ... everyone has fear, everyone has sin, everyone fears the devil, and no one wants to be faced with their deeds done in dark places or have their secrets exposed. The Car does those things but in a violent, maniacal fashion with no escape, no redemption, and no lesson to be learned. No hope is offered in the end as almost everyone dies, and those that don't are forever changed and will most likely never be the better for it. In all the other movies, including Christine, there was a reason for the action and we never know who's driving the vehicle in question or if there even is a driver. Thats scary...
    But in The Car, ... we literally have no idea what the reason is and boy oh boy we all know who is driving and what his particular intentions are and that my friends is far more horrifying and is evidenced by this, ... If you hear there is a child molester in your town, you get concerned. If you hear he is in you neighborhood, you feel fear. If you discover he lives on your street, you become terrified... But if you learn he is living next door, and your wife and kids are at his house, ... well my friends that is the epitome of horror. Not knowing is scary. Knowing, and being unable to do anything about it is far more terrible and one must dwell on what mistakes were made that led to such a situation.
    Of all the movies listed, The Car does just that.

    • @lonecrusaider
      @lonecrusaider 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think to call The Car so bad it's good is to seriously undersell it. Much of what's in that film is truly scary, right down to the concept itself, that it's the Devil's car. The scene where the car flips and takes out the sheriff's car--in the days when all such stunts had to be done for real--had me and my brother goggle-eyed with amazement. And the driver's-eye-view as the sheriff fires at the windscreen is the perfect mix of visuals and audio. It's a genuinely good movie, if not quite great. And way better than Christine which misses almost everything that made King's book such a page-turner. And you can't have a list of film cars like this without at least mentioning Vanishing Point.

    There were actually 6 of cars built for "the car". All but 1 were Lincolns and one Thunderbird was used as well. It's easy to spot in the movie as it's the only one used on screen that had chrome trim around the windshield.
    George Barris built all 6. They were outfitted with 1\8 inch sheet steel and raised the panels to the top of the door line to simulate the chopped top.
    It was written that each on screen car weighed in at between 7000 to 8500 pounds after they were built.
    Barris painted each car with 20 coats of pearl black paint but no clearcoat from what i read.
    All but 2 cars were destroyed. 1 is in a car museum somewhere and the other is in a private collection.

    ethe further it crept to the number 1 spot, the more I got upset Christine wasn't mentioned. I was 2yo when it came out... and surely watched parts when I was 6. I can vivdly remember scene like the car playing music while being crushed... the seats adjusting to choke someone. It was truly horrifying. A masterpiece... and you are right, what else could have been number 1.

But it is interesting to watch and there are some cool stunts for the low budget. When the time comes and I do a Screen Chassis episode of The Car, I will more than likely do a detailed discussion of the flip. It was amazing to see it done for real.

    From the beginning I knew it was either Christine or the The Car that would take 1-2 spot in here.

    I've seen a lot of films in the last 4 plus decades, yes indeed all of these come to mind ...... However ...... Through the former VHS 📼 days and DVDs ..... I just happened to have found my lost mail 📬 order DVD 📀 of THE CAR ... James Brolin .... Kathleen Lloyd..... Ronnie Cox ..... That car and the film itself boggles the mental cognizance and still to this day scares the living s*** out of me ..... I grew up at the end of the baby 🍼 boomer generation.... And I saw them all...... I wouldn't trade my growing up for the world...... I do have The Car ..... And PHANTASM all ..... On blueray DVD 📀 collector box .... That cudda vehicle I always wanted since it's my favorite color..... The stunts in both ..... Even PHANTASM ... The Tall Man .... still to this day plays with one's mental psyche...... Thanks for bringing back these classics ......

    News flash the truck from Maximum Overdrive did not have an official Green Goblin on the front.
    There was a lawsuit over the depiction.
    I used to see that truck all the time driving on I-75.

    Unfortunately it did not have the Happy Toys trailer.

    Thank you for making this video I think this is the best car horror movie... THE CAR also had a 4:11 Gear ratio, Which made a lot of torture for spinning those Micky Thompson tires 10" 1/2 inches wide each. At the end of the movie where it's blown up after going off the cliff you can see a mouth open and a tongue out... it really wasn't destroyed. Then when the credits scrolling at the very end of the movie you see the cars rear tires Traveling through a city it's not a desert... look closely real tires of THE CAR And at last few seconds you'll hear that cars Horn Blair it is still ALIVE !!!!
