Its not that they add a zonda exhaust. Technical garage sasaki makes long tube headers that make it sound like a zonda as zonda exhaust does not fit at all, its a front engine car vs a mid engine car.

Now this...this is a proper Mercedes. Took em about 20 years to get the styling right again AFTER this model.
5 grand is absolutely a steal even with the select few bugs it has. Engine seems great and body seems great for the most part, but my favorite is that interior that leather is immaculate for it's age. Unbelievable.

Finally a R129 modell. Congratulations, Hoovie reached automotive heaven. Big cheers from all SL-owners (like me) who have wet dreams of having a V12-M120, but fear the cost of repairing it and bought a simple R6-M104 ("half-engine"). I'm looking forward for your next SL-clip!
Roof 1: could be you need to re-initialize the window-setting (see manual).
Roof 2: could be the micro-sensors that indicate the windows are all down.
Roof 3: change the roof hydraulics oil, the it works smoother.
Wet Diff: not an issue, its a mercedes, dude.
Steering: new shock absorber is 25 dollars and five minutes work.
AC: try refilling it first, my W140 was all empty after 2 years sitting.
Brake squeek: normal when driving slow. mine does that too.
Brake light on/off: could be dirty wheel-speed-sensors in front.

Just a heads up on all 1997-2002 R129 cars. The keys (all the keys flip, valet, master) are all unavailable from Mercedes benz for about a year now. There are a few locksmiths that can make a chopped key (about $250-500 per flat chopped key). I have heard of 1 locksmith that can make and program a flip remote/key but I have been unable to verify. So do NOT lose your key(s)!

That is such an awesome car, one of the best of all time I think. They can't make them like that anymore. Now they are giant safety bubbles with huge crash structures. That thing is nice and low and thin and compact, yet still roomy inside. And the quality really can't be beat. What a classic. Beautiful car. I don't know about those wheels though.

    • @blackshadow7192
      @blackshadow7192 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

The R129 is actually reliable, even with the V12. Obviously it costs more money to maintain than a V8 version but it's nowhere near the cost of R230 SL or any mercedes from that era.
Same story with BMW, 750i and 850i from the 90s were not plagued with issues like the high end bimmers that came out later.

One thing I’ve noticed about MBs are that the engine is reliable yet the other non powertrain stuff isn’t. I have noticed that Tyler didn’t complain about the engine after 84K miles and 21 years. So it seems the reliability of the engine is the most important.

I bought a rust free one owner 92 500SL with 88k for only $3k earlier this year. I put about $500 into it to repair the top cylinders and front brakes. Awesome car and really fun to cruise in. The value of these cars is on the rise, especially in UK/Europe. Lots of US models are being shipped over.

  • @gosportjamie

I suspect the issue with the top not wanting to play the game may be an issue with the computer having lost its settings. A reboot might sort that out pretty cheaply, and the top itself looked to be in beautiful condition. Factory black is a pretty rare colour option on one of these, in Europe at least. It certainly has potential, it's only a matter of time before the values of these V12 SLs go as nuts as the values of the previous generation 560SL...

I have a 2000 E class, and I could do pretty much anything I want without looking away from the road vs. a new Lexus I was driving while on vacation where I had to make sure the screen was on the right menu or right setting to turn on the radio. But hey, that's what the car buyers are looking for I guess.

People often get into a flap about the accumulators collapsing on the hydraulic suspension. They are the size of a grapefruit and contain about a pint of nitrogen at about two hundred and fifty atmospheres pressure. The nitrogen is retained by a synthetic rubber diaphragm. When a wheel encounters a bump the actuator on the suspension, behaving like a giant syringe, forces hydraulic fluid through piping against the diaphragm to compress the nitrogen ‘gas spring’. The viscosity of the fluid in the pipes behaves as the suspension dampener. With age the diaphragms can rupture, the gas escapes into the hydraulic fluid and the hydraulic fluid now fills the sphere . Replacing a broken accumulator sphere is a DIY job, and the part along with replacement fluid is not that expensive.

This car reminds me of my childhood years, when I was in school, now I am 34. I see him cruising with the top down, and it reminds me of a rich person, who drives this car along the coast line, with a beautiful, beautiful brunette, or blonde girl, and this was the latest, and the greatest from MB. Like one of the 90s movies, where Tom Cruise, or someone of the kind, drives the car in a movie. I just like them, and there used to be a coupe of the S class at the time, this was the S class Roadster, being the SL< but the metal roof(not cabrio) coupe S class, was 600SEC, the headlights are a bit different they go over and inside the hood a little. There it is, I love it:

I had a 2 door S 600 back in the day and man do I miss that car. I bought it from government auction and it was full of all sorts of surprises including bullet proof glass that was swapped for the factory double glazed windows. It also had ballistic panels in the doors and quarters etc. On top of that it had early Goodyear run flat tires that weighed a ton. The list could go on. It also had some tuning because it was almost a half second faster in the quarter mile. But best of all is they installed holsters inside the doors. If anyone knows S600's they'll know where because they had semi hidden door pockets that popped open and in my car it had holsters inside that fit my .40 cal perfectly on both sides.

I'll give you a hint, I used to own one when I was 18 years old, it was the first car i bought with my own money. Get rid of the stock air filter boxes and put in some 3" pipes with a rubber boot and a high performance air filter (those cone looking things). The power increase is INSANE, you'll notice when you take out the stock filters why. Its 3" going to the engine, but only about 1" on the scoop side! Mercedes did this to limit the air that would go into the engine so they could limit emissions. This'll cost you about 40 bucks total. Dyno it before and after. On mine I also deleted the Cats (not needed in my country) and I straight piped the rear exhaust, just left the Y exhaust connector in the middle
