I'm pretty sure even golb is so confused on his own actions, like "am is supposed to be the embodiment of chaos? Why am i so inclined at saving this guy?" Like the dissonance of golb and Betty's will must have put some confusion on that chaos god.
if i recall, Golb is basically a baby with barely any motives other than "universes are delicious, so i should eat them!" Betty is probably babysitting baby Golb by being in his head, or she gave Golb some games to be distracted with or something, much like how Shermy was distracted with video games when Simon was piloting his body. Either that or Golb was just not conscious in the first place, or Golb's consciousness was erased when Betty took over the Lich being a "last scholar of Golb" is probably just the Lich overadmiring Golb's destructive nature meanwhile Golb just views himself destroying universes as eating lunch

The saddest part is Simon... You were everything. Simon really hasn't let go yet. Loss is so hard to handle. Betty is ready to move on, Simon was just a stop on the bus of existence. For Simon... she was the only stop, and he is stuck waiting for the bus to come back forever. It's so very ... very sad.
Definitely recommend looking up the Adventure Time comics (there's a series that features Simon and Marcy where they save Betty). Also, hopefully there's some AU Simons and Bettys that got together across the multiverse (they may have either died because of the Mushroom War/vampires, or their universe was able to avoid those events, but either way it's possible there's a surviving Simon x Betty relationship out there).
This is much more complex, Simon had Betty... we all love and lose. Everyone will pass from this world one day. No one gets anyone in the end. We all live and we all die. And somewhere inbetween we get to experience each other, for a brief moment. Betty has come to terms with that here... she says You were a wonderful experience. ... and Simon has not... he said She was everything. When we cannot come to terms with the ending of all things, we forget the experience in the middle. Simon in this way is like the Lich... too obsessed with the end of all things, to see the value of life, especially the life we got to experience. This is also why a lot of older folks, do not live very long after their significant other dies, and why people who lose the one they love very early in life, spiral tragically into a deep overwhelming depression. This is a lesson that is very very hard to learn and embrace. Write things down, do not put it off for another day... each and every moment you are with someone IS absolutely the most important moment in your life. The stupid arguments, the dumb things people say, the kind gestures. The rainy days... write it all down, cherish the moments you have, you will absolutely with no question lose them one day. And you will value the words, the pictures, the trinkets, the little things. all of it matters. Every dumb thing you cannot see value in, KNOW it has value to future you. Please. know it.
Damn that shit made me cry, idk why, simon and betty are like those "What If" couple, like what if they actually did made good choices cause they did have the potential to actually be together for a long time, get married and have kids but at the same time their fate is the reason why Ooo was saved so its tricky.
it's a happy ending, I think this is a happy ending for Simon (and Betty). Simon was always trying to find a way to meet Betty and try to bring her back, but Betty want to make sure Simon gets a second chance and moves on with his life. So both simon and betty are happy
I wonder if Golb chose to let Betty stay merged with them because they wanted to understand the kind of self-sacrifice/destruction people were capable of when someone else is involved. Golb is shown to be a child alone no parents or others of its species ever present so how else would someone like them understand what love is.
