    Having lunch between 12 and 1pm is suicide. You want to have it early after clearing X Sector and Dark Forest (I can normally clear these by 10:50 off peak, 11:30 on peak) or my personal favourite, grab some lunch and join a queue and eat it there. Wickerman is best ridden in the afternoon once crowds disperse and before dusk at Scarefest. Failing that, getting in the queue at ride close even if it is long as this extends your day technically.
    Learn the route between Dark Forest and Forbidden Valley well. You could end up using it alot. And don't forget Spinball or RMT

    The rides don't open until 10am but the gates open at 9am, normally I use this time to make my way all the way over to Galactica and join the queue, usually means we get on shortly after 10am and are right next to nemesis (if it was still there) for 2nd ride. Normally leaving that area towards wickerman at about 11:30, i've also found with wickerman being so new that best time to go on it is lunchtime, where you can get lucky with a 40 minute queue.
    But, honestly, the data doesn't lie so I'd expect this way to still be quicker, as you said in the video people take pride in their own methods.

    4:15 "forbidden forest" my favourite part of the park on my last trip I started there and the only ride I had to queue for that day was Wickerman minus the fact Rita and smiler were closed

    As somebody that visits this park multiple times a month... I can tell you that... No route worked during some of the half term scarefest days this year!!! Park was the worst I've seen it for a long time... 120 minute queues everywhere, queue times actually underestimated!!! Rides constantly breaking down, some for long periods, sometimes leading to evacuation after queueing over an hour...
    Your route isn't far off my normal route though to be fair,. However I usually arrive early and hit smiler first, whilst there's no queue, then head to Thirteen and Rita, often still on low queues at this point... Oblivion is normally a queue eating monster, and often has the lowest queue all day, so I head there just before grabbing lunch. Then I do forbidden valley. If there's time I'll do any other rides we want to ride, or perhaps some re-rides... Always join the Wicker Man queue last thing, queue shuts, ride doesn't... And the later the time, the better it rides :)

    I rarely use the Skyride when it is busy. It would be interesting to see what impact using the Skyride would have on peak and non peak days. Possibly your model could explore what impact it would have if the Skyride was to open at park opening and if it was replaced/updated to have an improved throughput. Good work with this video.

    • @coasterbot
      @coasterbot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It would be interesting to compare skyride use to non-skyride use. I mostly avoid the skyride on busy days because the queues always seem excessively long. :)

    I always go in the order of forbidden valley first, then dark forest, hex, x-sector, then food, then wickerman and any other smaller rides like duel, spin ball or rapids. Works every time!

    Since I started doing this in 2018 (late for me being 48 at the time) I visited Cedar Point with the expectation I'd go from coasters with the smallest drop to the biggest so that the bigger ones wouldn't spoil me for the smaller ones. But when I got there I discovered that the park is so big it kinda forces you where to go so as to not waste time, and that's been replicated at every major amusement park I've visited since. (Besides, I've since discovered my OG amusement park coaster order criteria was flawed since that "butterflies in the stomach" feeling I love only happens about once a year for me, since it's so easy to gain a tolerance to and also because it comes from relatively tame elements; only requiring between 0 and -1gs, so next time I'm going for the best coaster 1st, but I digress). What I've experienced makes this post all the more important, ESPECIALLY at Alton Towers, where rides are spread out over such a large area. So, I want to thank you for having posted this video; it's priceless.
    I rode Behemoth (with total track length of 5318') at Canada Wonderland 13 times in two hours which gives the total average interval between and INCLUDING the ENTIRE ride duration 9 minutes and 32 seconds, consisting of a prime ride time of 70 seconds and total ride time of 3 minutes and 10 seconds. That means that I only spent 6:25 between a train I'm riding from the moment it stops at the station to the next train I'm on being dispatched from the station. The park got SLAMMED by crowds by 1:00pm that day, but that two hour duration was between 10:35am and 12:35pm before the crowds got too big. (I obviously had a Fast Lane Plus)
    However: Coaster at Playland in Vancouver has a different load and unload station and has a short cue if it's not crowded, so there it's possible to get right back onto the same train you were just riding before its next cycle. In that scenario it's possible to cycle the track every three minutes, but that only lasts for the 1st hour of opening on a dead weekday at best.
    To best get to the front of the "pre cue" at Alton Towers, I'd recommend staying at Ivy Trough House; an enchanted B&B (I almost said B&M ;) ) the closest lodging to the entrance of the park and much less expensive than the park's resort hotel which is at the opposite terminal of the monorail, and you don't have to worry about parking a car either since it's already parked (assuming the guest owns a car and lives in England, both own which I do not).
    For my next paragraph: I recommend reading it in Coaster Bot's voice: In the bigger parks of North America like Cedar Point and Canada Wonderland, there is a rope drop that opens when the park is officially supposed to open to guests who have both provided proof of payment and passed security checks into the park, but only about 25 meters in, where they are barred by a rope and security guards from entering further. That rope is supposed to release the guests at exactly the official opening time, at which point there is a "Running of the bulls" to each guest's favourite attraction.
    The only time I got to Canada Wonderland before 10:00am the rope drop was earlier than it should have been, so I missed it and ran to Leviathan to ride it, but not before purchasing my 4th consecutive daily Fast Lane Plus. After that: I was on the lift hill of Leviathan at exactly 10:00am (when the park was ostensibly supposed to have the rope drop,) when I just happened to be sitting with next to a stranger who was admittedly privileged yet understandably frustrated to have also discovered that he was late for the rope drop too, DESPITE having gotten past security before 10:00am and more importantly was a seasoned local guest of the park, and almost never saw the rope drop early. He also remarked that he always goes home before having to wait even as much as half an hour to ride any attraction.
    My longest wait on any attraction where having a Fast Lane Plus that allows guests to skip most of the cue was 35 minutes. That only happened once for "Behemoth"; one of three rides at Canada Wonderland the Fast Lane Plus is needed for to skip most of the cue that the mere "Fast Lane" cannot: Yukon Striker, Leviathan and Behemoth. That was an extremely long wait despite the fact that I used that pass to skip most of the cue. But I only had to wait 35 minutes once for any ride that I could use the fast pass to enter the fast pass cue, but I often had to wait 25 minutes for rides that also featured either a fast pass plus cue.
    To be fair and honest: These "cue times"; (35 mins, 25 mins etc.) also INCLUDE the loading, total ride time and unloading as well as the time it takes coaster marathoning guests to leave the train, the station, and get back into the cue again and the next wait time. In other words: The times I provide are what I would call the "entire coaster marathoner cycle time", not just waiting in the cue. Otherwise I could say I that at Canada Wonderland I once had to wait half an hour for an elite coaster and I often had to wait 20 minutes for an elite coaster, but that costs me the $ it takes to purchase a Fast Lane Plus pass every day I was there.
    Thank you for this video, Harry, I loved your video. Alton Towers is my favourite amusement park in the U.K. after Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

      @@tomrycroft No, I wrote it yesterday. If I lived close to Alton Towers I'd buy a season pass and know which days aren't slammed. I went with some friends a few weeks before scarefest on a weekday - arrived at 12 ish and left at 6 ish. Firstly we walked to galactica and waited an hour for that then waited another hour or so for nemesis. We weren’t keen on paying for the scaremazes so took for hex instead. It was around 3 pm at this point. After that we went to the smiler and joined the normal queue running at 45 mins (was about an hour and a bit cause it had a short outage). At around half 4, we head over to wickerman and get on in 20 minutes and pop into the sea life afterwards. At this point it’s around 5 ish and we head to nemesis as it had an advertised 10 min queue (and so it did). A great back row ride to finish the day off and we made it back just in time.
    Tips for trip
    -Eat lunch in queue (we did it on nemesis)
    -Bring your own lunch, don’t buy it from the stores
    -Bring some water as you can get it refilled for free
    -Whenever you enter the park always head left unless there’s randomly a small queue on smiler due to an outage idk
    -Never use cable car between mutiny and forbidden use the lakeside walk instead
    -On a busy day better off walking from forbidden to mutiny then mutiny to towers and dark forest to get to rita and thirteen
    -If going by car don’t take the monorail, it’s faster walking. You may have to walk after a long day but it’s better than standing still in queue for an hour

I always go there in october, midweek, when the park is open only from 10 till 4 and guess what? I manage to ride them all. I usually start from the sonic spinball as it gives you the boost, then go to the smiler and oblivion. you then move to rita and thirteen. then you get the cable car and go on nemesis, galactica and finally the wicker man. On those days, the longest waiting time is around 10-15 minutes and many times much less... Only downside is sometimes unfortunately ride closures but this is not something you can predict.

The single rider queue will be SIGNIFICANTLY shorter but I don’t h think the time for it would be on the queue times website.
    Also, since the rides near the entrance get filled up first, I recommend you go to the Forbidden Valley first.

    Great video. The question is, will the temporary rides added for this year which have proved to soften the queue times on the major rides stay? Otherwise the average queue times stated in the data will increase, potentially ruining this plan.

    • @jakehopkins6989
      @jakehopkins6989 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but it's safe to assume the queues for the temp rides would be distributed relatively evenly which means the order of rides in this video still applies

    • @coasterbot
      @coasterbot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, and that's a fantastic question. I hope Alton Towers have realised that adding more rides does help soften the queues elsewhere. Perhaps we'll see more permanent flat rides in the future.
      To be honest, there's a lot that could ruin the plan, even simply a ride being closed! :)

      Try this instead ...i always use this when I go it is the fastest way around the park by a long shot .... get to main gate before 9.20am they usually let you go into the park to que for a ride so start with wicker man get on and off that by 10.10am head to 13 next ride this and Rita before 11am even get a ride on hex while you wait on skyride opening at 11am next take skyride over and you will be at forbidden valley for 11.10am do galactica first and then nemesis all before 12am as it is still earlyin the day this is possible ...then head over to oblivion while eating a hot dog from a quick service 😉 ride oblivion usually a 20 min que this time of day and then single rider the smiler all before 1pm this works and I have done this on packed days 🤯😛the reason this works is because you ahead of the crowds.. the two biggest ques all day is wicker and smiler by doing what I said above this eliminates them.. you get a ride on wicker with next to no que then head to the rest of the rides while most the people in the park get stuck in smiler and wickermans que in the morning the you single rider smiler later as that's the quicker way to do this 😀

    15 minutes to walk there? At Magic Mountain in CA that's a close ride. Everything in Magic Mountain is really far away from everything else, but on the giant plus side, all that walking, and it really is a mountain (big hill), so you can eat whatever you want because you are burning crazy calories the whole day.

    • @JoshuaHere
