- Today I'm revisiting the goals I set for last. year and whether or not I was successful (hint: success is in the eye of the beholder 🥰). I will also be sharing new goals that I have set for 2024! I hope you'll join me 😊💕

I ran into he same thing this year, I wanted to do so much on my channel and I ran out of time to sew for me and to engage more in the community where I live. I( love goals. For hobbies they are guideposts to remind me of what it is my heart desires from sewing. It helps me be more thoughtful - as long as I pay attention to them. I am 100% Ok with reevaluating and removing goals if they do not fit in with what I want to do. This year I am going to try to sew down my stash more. I have been working at it for a little while, but I am going to be more aggressive with it. I am too overwhelmed with sewing stuff and I do not need to keep spending money on fabric if I already have something that will do the job.

2023 was a rough year for me and time for sewing was limited. My goal, this year, is simply to sew garments for myself more. I’ve been working on my fitting skills a lot, and I feel like things are starting to make more sense, so maybe I’ll have more success. BTW-I love the Charlie Caftan every time you wear it. 😊-Deborah
I'm sorry you had such a rough year Deborah {hugs}. The fitting journey is really a journey, isn't it? I'm looking forward to when the adjustments become second nature LOL! Thank you for the nice words about my Charlie Caftan - I love that dress so much!
I've never really connected with the idea of hobbies. Sewing for me is a way to put well-made clothes that I love on my beautiful fat body. So I definitely go into it goal oriented! I think you did an amazing job of balancing all your sewing ambitions for 2023 and I hope that 2024 brings what you want and need with it.

I do love your approach. Guidelines are less stressful than goals to me. I don’t need any more stress but I do want to push my skill set. I am very good at being negative and my sewing needs to be a positive thing in my life. I think you have achieved such a lot and you are inspirational to many. It is easy to forget that in the middle of all this you have moved house- as I did this year and it is hard work. Love all of your new goals and look forward to seeing you share your 2024 journey. My goal is more slow sewing and improving my standards. Also making more craft things- did a mug rug in December and was so shocked at how much I enjoyed it!!!

Really enjoy your videos. Love your dress and that is one of my goals to make that pattern. You have achieved so much and work full time, don’t be so hard on your self. You are so much fun and honest. I make lists, so maybe they are goals, but once I cross something off it makes me feel good no matter how long it takes. I agree that goals should be thought of as ideas to take forward throughout the coming year and you shouldn’t beat yourself up if other ideas take precedence or life gets in the way.
I love the idea of sewalongs and tutorials on your channel and can’t wait to see what you bring us.

Michelle, first off, you look fabulous in your video today. The colors, the garment, the hair, the jewelry,,,,,you knocked it out of the park. So what if you toodle around the house looking gorgeous in this dress et al. Go for it. Now, I just want you to know I found you just a few months ago and I absolutely enjoy your videos, your attitude, and your projects. I've yet to find, well, look for, your ice dyeing vids, but I will find them. I find you to be a gifted fiber artist and look forward to learning more about your ice dyeing and seeing the projects that come from those efforts. As far as resolutions, I am one who has them but they are in my head. I don't go overboard, but am pretty good at sticking by them. I keep things simple and I keep them to my self. Just my way.I have been blogging almost 20 years under "La Sewista" and don't think I have ever done a "goals" post. I think it is because I like to be a free spirit and not have my creativity tied down to any sort of commitment. Selfish, don't ya think? but it's my creativity, which I do share and love doing so. One thing about journals---I have been journaling my sewing for at least a decade. I love to do that but mine are really simple. I use the black and white school notebooks and no pictures. I figure I have pics of everything on the blog and go into great detail there. In my journal are all my notes about fit, changes. etc. I keep my notebook open on my cutting table at all times. Every time I do something different from the pattern I write it down. I make note of the pattern and fabric but don't put in any swatches or such. This year, after many, I decided it was time to get a really nice journal and am enjoying that as opposed to my school notebooks. I figure I am leaving some sort of legacy so I better start making it look good! I use my journals to help me write my blog on a garment and also to refer to when I go to remake the same pattern or use the same fabric. Moving on, like you, I like to see all of my fabric which is not a huge amount. Anything I can't see is too much. I've tried it but have found tracking my fabrics to be, for me, a waste of time. All m fabric is visible and that is all I need to see and sew. I do, now, use the labels from Kylie and the machine, to stick to my my fabrics and denote fiber content, yardage amt, etc. But won't waste sewing time inputting data. Others are welcome to do so. Again, just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your videos. I think we have a lot in common. I also wanted to respond to your questions you posted today about goals and resolutions. Well thank you so much for your kind words! I like your resolution philosophy - that wouldn't work for me because nothing stays in my head very long LOL! I'm definitely going to check out your blog. I don't think being a free spirit is selfish at all! In fact, I think that's why sewing goals, in general, don't work for me. I want to sew what I want when I want!! Michelle, I agree with you, goals for me are a starting point on ideas that I would like to set for myself to strive for during the year. If I am not able to achieve them the I will work on the next year. Your caftan if gorgeous and the ice dying is beautiful, and you have such talent in that form of art. You inspire me every time I watch your videos and see you wearing something ice dyed that I would love to learn how to do that craft. Thanks so much Jeanne! As for ice dyeing - it's really not very difficult. I recommend Fun Endeavors Tie Dye and Belladonna Dyes as two great TH-cam resources 😊
You had a very productive year! For me... enjoyment is the main goal... if I used goals (I kind of do but I just don't use the word much!) I'm list oriented but I stopped resolutions years ago - I switched to "What I'd like to accomplish this year" (I guess those are goals, LOL) ... well - if I don't get those items accomplished?... no biggie. I don't use it just for sewing. For sewing this year I'd like to continue trying out the patterns I have and minimize buying new ones. I'd also like to use the fabric I have whenever possible. Thrift store purchases are exempt from this! LOL. Like you - I want to make things I'll wear. While I may really admire a lot of things that are out there, I'd be kidding myself if I thought I'd be wearing them. It's so easy to get excited about patterns when they are the patterns everyone else is making but for many of them they just don't work out for me. Happy New Year!

I think it’s great that you set flexible goals. I remember when you revised your fabric number and I admired that. I would’ve tried to push through and made myself miserable. Also, happy you still love your hat!
When it comes to goals in other parts of my life, I'm less flexible (finance goals, career goals) but for something that is supposed to be FUN? I gotta be flexible or I'll make myself miserable!! I LOVE my hat - it's beautiful!!
I really enjoy your vlogs and chat 😊 I think making goals at the beginning of the year Is a good way to start the year afresh but at the end of the year you shouldn't hit yourself over the head for what you think you haven't achieved I think like you it is better to focus on your progress...every make in sewing is progress wether we like it or hate it it is a learning process...and for me the best part of utube is finding out that other sewers have great makes and great fails ...for me that's reassuring..I am looking forward to continuing to watch your vlogs in 2024 ...I think you do a great job😊

I'm inspired by your video/chat to set some goals for my own sewing and crafting. Fly by the seat of my pants is usual daily mode, jumping from one project to another and sometimes finishing a project. Lately I've been finishing more projects and that makes me happy. I guess one big goal for 2024 is to tackle some of those unfinished projects. One goal I do have this year is to jump into tie-dying and I've found a shop that provides instruction and space and supplies to work on individual projects, which is exciting. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and inspirations.
I'm also a fly by the seat of my pants kind of sewist - I think goals help me when I'm not especially inspired. That's so fun that you're going to take a tie dye class! I can't wait to hear about it 😊
My only goal is to start making things now that I will need for a certain date rather than waiting and not having enough time to get them done, such as birthday or Christmas gifts. I don't enjoy the pressure I put on myself and rushing or not being able to enjoy the process.

After listening to your last year's goals and what you accomplished, I thing you did pretty well. I tend to look at my sewing goals as inspiration as well. So good for you. You know, you should invite Mari down to your house for a vacation and maybe she could help you with your leather bag. I'm sure she would love some ice dyed fabric and a bit of social sewing time with you. Just a suggestion. If I saw you out and about down in the outfit with the pink hat and the cool caftan and I had no idea who you were, I would be thinking, I really need to get to know that girl. She looks fun. My goal last year was to sew more for myself. Before that I was sewing mostly for my granddaughter. And I think I did a pretty good job of that. I still sew a lot for the grandkids, but I have been able to make time to make some garments for me as well. I've learned a great deal and it has really been enjoyable. Watching your videos has been really encouraging to keep at it. Now if I make something and it doesn't fit right or doesn't look the way I hoped I just set it aside for a bit and sew something easy. Then figure out if I can make it work for me or if I can make something out of it for the granddaughters. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Michelle, thank you so much for this video and for being relaxed and honest about your goals. The styling one I really ought to pay attention to as I have a tendency also to just throw on the garment 'fresh' off the sewing machine and snap a picture 😂. To be honest though, Goals aren't for me and I have only one request to myself for next year in regards to sewing, to be revealed on FS. I'm a Gemini, I'm fickle and hate being tied down 🤪. I don't like being tied down either - I think that's why very specific goals tend not to work very well for me. I want to do what I want when I want LOL! But I find that having general goals helps me out when I'm not feeling especially inspired. I'm looking forward to hearing your request for yourself in FS! I don’t have goals for sewing . I’ll start chemotherapy later this month followed by surgery. But if it’s all not too rough, I’ll do a little sewing and painting (my other hobby). Until then, I’m making a few doll outfits for one of my granddaughters. I made her a cloth doll for Christmas.

My goal is to keep watching you, because it gives me great pleasure to follow your journey. My second goal is to be the best possible version of myself every day, whether that be sewist, wife, mother, grandmother, cat mother, gardener, home handywoman - in other words, me doing me as best as I can. I don’t set sewing goals at all. Like you Michelle I will definitely continue with DAGAW sewing, as and when time/inclination happens, during the year. Otherwise I’m disciplined and pretty much finish one project at a time. I don’t keep much of a stash or haberdashery because of this which is good but not always helpful!
I also finish one project at a time - but I like having options to choose from when I'm ready to make something 🤣
Some good ideas here Michelle. My goal for this year is to continue with my stash busting, make a French cardigan jacket and photograph my makes better for Instagram. Blessings for the new year

I don't set goals or set resolutions and it's because I never complete them. I agree how you say it's guidelines for you. I would like to come up with a word that means I would like to do such n such but not make it to where I feel like I failed.
My word for this year is PROGRESS. I feel like as long as I'm moving in the right direction with my goals, I'm succeeding 😊

Hi Michelle, I agree with having guidelines instead of goals. I too am one who falls off the wagon-especially when trying to achieve new habits. It takes many days, weeks to form new habits and can’t be very challenging if you are trying to do more than one at a time. Good luck with your revised list for 2024. Your dress is beautiful and I love the magenta hat & shoes, pulls you together from head to toe! 🥰.
