20 years ago, my husband and I were living in Lightning Ridge. We didn’t have a lot of money so for our anniversary he decided to make a vegetable garden for me. He was digging when he hit a rock. Turned out that the rock was a 3.4 carat blue/green black opal. We had it cut and set into a ring. Best anniversary present ever!

I inherited a couple of pieces of jade from my mom. One of them, she called "water jade." It was mostly clear, like water, with some gray spots, and she said it would "bloom," or "mature" over time. Well, 50-ish years later, it has filled in quite a bit! The gray spots have spread and deepened and even a little red has crept in. I love rocks! Thanks for the great video!

The “snake stone” video is likely real-but not in the way you suspect. As mentioned, it’s common practice to obtain these snakes and insert the stones in them for show. The likeliest scenario is that the snake was caught, a hole cut in its head, and the bead put in. It’s genuinely animal cruelty-imagine lots of people doing this to dogs or cats just to promote a legend.

Once I learned what made each gemstone high or low quality I really began to appreciate the rarity of the truly beautiful specimens.

It is a pearl, pearls don’t have to be round, they grow inside clams and mussels from a pice of something small getting stuck inside their shell and they produce this stuff that coats and goes around the annoying object to protect them so that giant pearl was found in a giant clam and was some kind of object that got stuck inside the giant clam and the clam coated the object in their special secretions to coat it to keep it from being irritating and after many years the pearl grew and grew, that’s why the pearl is wavy because it was in there so long that it took the shape of the inside of the giant clam!!

I am surprised you didn't mention Smithsonite. I used to Rockhound around Kelley mine west of Socorro NM. I found a few awesome bubbles of Smithsonite. I have rarely seen it mentioned or displayed at rock and mineral museums. It became a favorite of mine. Only found in Tsumeb Namibia, the Kelly Mine in New Mexico, and Sardinia, Italy. Granted it is a soft stone but very rare and so beautiful!

I was told this substance was used by Indians because it's easy to chip away in order to make arrowheads and other sharp cutting edges.
I live in NY and down in the Hudson river there is a lot of obsidian on the bank of the river. Most of it appears black in color but I have picked up pieces of various light blue. We don't have any volcanoes anywhere that I'm aware of so I wonder where it came from and why it's here to begin with. When the tide is low it's easy to find bigger samples as it's plentiful in the particular spot I know of. I could easily go fill a grocery bag full tomorrow if I wanted to. Up till now I've carried some fist size pieces home and placed them in a small garden area. It must be low on the MOHS because I've broken it before. The edges can be quite sharp, like glass and you can easily cut yourself before you even realize it. I imagine it's low in value or it wouldn't be where it is in excessive amounts. Does anybody know how or why it would be found on the banks of the Hudson river in NY? Perhaps I should take a hammer and chisel down there sometime and try to break open larger pieces to look for brighter hues of blue. Would it be a total waste of time? Does anyone have any interest, knowledge or comments about it?

There is a rare specie of marine snake that has a stone on its head, sometimes luminescent. Also said to be very intelligent like dolphins. They're found in inland waters like rivers and lakes and they're very large, up to 2 meters, and are very aggressive and so the stones are very hard to obtain. So the idea of stones from snakes is far from myth.

I went gem hunting in the mountains and found at least a twenty carrot ruby... they said it would cost $3000-$5000 to have it cut but it would be worth it. Never did though. Still have it and love to pull it out at times. It's as round as a quarter.

@@rachelpadilla9368 because I don't have 3-5 grand to risk on it...now they have synthetic rubies that are huge. And getting easier to make.
I went to a place where you pay to have a chance at finding rare stones. I spent about $450 on one of the bigger bucket deals. It was one of better finds. After mining they had jewelers to tell you what they were and about how much they would be worth. Especially if you wanted to pay them to make it into jewelry.
They said 3-5 grand but after it was cut it could go as high as 20,000-30,000. But sounded like it could have been a hustle or at least marked up a little higher.
They were all surprised by how big it was and that I found it there though. But I image they can't let everyone know where they hide the bigger winners.
It wasn't real mining but different sized buckets with random stones and jewels and different values. Like you could try for 10 bucks but I went all out which had higher rewards.
